who might be thinking of joining.

You will only be allowed to stay if: you can spell, can type, have a good grasp of English grammar, and preferably have a degree (OU is allowed).

And whatever you do don't show any sign of a slightly smutty sense of humour. That will make the poor gentle-women on here tear their hair, and Gransnet will delete you in case you scare off any potential advertisers. (not there seems to be many at the moment)

these pillows are a really good idea in the competitions section.

Might buy GS's one of those each. Comfier than headphones. Do you (anyone) think they'd be able to hear their stories ok?

Talking of earphones - well, weren't we? - has anybody used the ones that let you listen to the TV without having the sound so loud the family complain?

jO5 Tue 27-Nov-12 12:56:38

Not yet. But I think I'm going to have to soon. Can't keep driving DH out to the other tv. Or - what I do sometimes - watch it on normal volume, and then go on i-player next day with the subtitles on. (Hate watching normally with sub-titles. Can't watch and read at the same time!)

DH does seem to have very tender lug 'oles! hmm

How much easier it is now to access the OU I remember doing my degree by being up early at something stupid o'clock to get through my course on the BBC,how I wish we had access to the internet in those times.

annodomini Tue 27-Nov-12 13:22:01

That's true, glamma. When I did the French course, only 15 - 18 years ago, all the assignments went in by post and we had videos and broadcasts. My DS has been doing it this year and it's been almost all on line. We had more live tutorials for which I was very grateful.

I was amused when going through an old diary of my mother's, written when I was about eight, to find:

'Jean ( me) has managed to swim two strokes, I believe the first in her class to do so'.

I defy anyone to beat that.

smile

Nelliemoser Tue 27-Nov-12 15:24:30

I was thinking, mum was only in her late twenties when she wrote that.

Suddenly I feel a bit tearful for what I had and haven't got any more.

Grannyeggs Tue 27-Nov-12 20:01:54

Oh hang on I have lost my marbles that last post should be on another thread...thats what I get for DH talking to me for the last 30mins about something really technical he is doing at work (I lost the will to live) and and got confuddled grin

glassortwo Tue 27-Nov-12 20:51:33

Now I cant find which thread it was hmm

janeainsworth Tue 27-Nov-12 20:52:30

petallus flowers no-one can ever replace your mum, can they?

Nanadog Tue 27-Nov-12 22:18:53

My late mother would not have bothered to record anything so trivial in her view. Don't misunderstand me, I think it's lovely what your mum wrote, it just shows how proud she was of you petallus.
If I got a merit, in piano for example, it ought to have been a distinction. If I came 2nd in the year then that was not good enough and all praise was faint. My friends never met with her approval and she tried to push me into befriending the 'rich' girls instead. My father was bad mouthed behind his back and later to his face.
I envy you being tearful for a mum who isn't there any more. It showed you had a loving relationship. When my mother died, by her own hand, my over-riding emotion was relief.

Grannyeggs Tue 27-Nov-12 22:24:39
