Does anyone else think that there is far too much petty bickering on GN

If you read the threads there is quite a bit of banter between members, I am sooo dissapointed at this because at our age we really should know better. It makes me feel un comfortable and I have actually been at the other end of such goings on. Really not sure what response I am going to get with this thread but can not help but be honest.

or even myself grin I really must slow down!!

Granny23 Thu 20-Dec-12 03:08:09

Yes, better slow down Sel you have completely lost me - you will have to explain to me about the 'motherland' - what is that? Is it a joke? In which case I won't get it being one of those pesky types with no sense of humour sad

baubles Thu 20-Dec-12 07:24:52

Strangely enough, my Scottish education didn't make any mention of a 'motherland' confused

Not that I'm nitpicking or anything, but I believe Bags was educated in England but chooses Scotland as her home grin

Dinnae fash yersel' G23 I'm sure you will put the record straight. Sorry to see you were awake at all hours again. The legs?

Bags Thu 20-Dec-12 08:15:32

Some of my education was in Scotland, baubles, by choice at Dundee, and jolly good it was too smile

baubles Thu 20-Dec-12 08:36:55

I know Bags but I was thinking primary & secondary Hey ho grin

Bags Thu 20-Dec-12 08:44:19

I thought you were, baubles. That's fine. Just wanted to be clear. Tertiary education does count for something, after all wink

Nanado Thu 20-Dec-12 09:05:00

baubles wink

Nelliemoser Thu 20-Dec-12 09:08:13

When these Scots get independence, will they want to run their own Gransnet and post only in Scottish dialects to show off their impeccable spellings? wink

Ana Thu 20-Dec-12 09:17:53

Nellie! grin

annodomini Thu 20-Dec-12 09:18:20

I have a foot in both camps, as has Bags and so many trans-border exiles! So dinnae fash yersel, Nellie.

Nelliemoser Thu 20-Dec-12 09:21:18

he! he! he! Instead of stirring up the Scots I should be looking at shopping lists. TTFN grin

jO5 Thu 20-Dec-12 09:31:26

*Bags& has totally gone native. hmm

jO5 Thu 20-Dec-12 09:31:38

wink !

Movedalot Thu 20-Dec-12 10:00:01

Well I'm half Scots and half Sassenach (no idea how to spell it) and I can spell very well normally using a pen but when I use a keyboard my brain and fingers seem not to communiate - so there! grin My excuse and I'm sticking to it.wink

Nelliemoser Thu 20-Dec-12 10:03:40

movedalot You only need to spell half of it. grin

Ariadne Thu 20-Dec-12 10:10:13

Whenever I hear Scots being proud (and I am married to one and rationally think they have every reason to be proud) my unforgiving, severe, disapproving (of everything but especially me) Scottish MiL gets into my head, and I want to say all the things I never said to her. I have to dismiss her fast, otherwise I respond quite inappropriately to even lighthearted comments. That woman's effect on me is ridiculous.

My vituperative moment has now passed, and I'd just like to say that I did not have a Scottish education and am still able to use English correctly. And I won't mention rugby...

Movedalot Thu 20-Dec-12 10:13:07

Which half Nellie? wink

whenim64 Thu 20-Dec-12 10:42:07

Vituperate away Ariadne! grin we're here for you if you get the vapours when the haggis comes out in the new year grin

annodomini Thu 20-Dec-12 10:52:54

OMG. Ariadne's seething again. [scared emoticon]

Greatnan Thu 20-Dec-12 10:53:54

I hope your tooth is better, anno - you were very stoical yesterday.

Ariadne Thu 20-Dec-12 11:13:02

But I controlled the seethe! She still does it to me and she's been dead for quite a while!

Sook Thu 20-Dec-12 11:13:07

Nellie You took the words right out of my mouthgrin

Nelliemoser Thu 20-Dec-12 11:14:27

movedalot That has to be your choice! Far be it from me, a mere Englishwoman. to make any decisions on behalf of even half a Scot! wink

Elegran Thu 20-Dec-12 11:19:27

I am a naturalised Scot whose first 16 years were spent in the south of England, so any ability in that language is due to primary or secondary (Grammar School) English education - or possibly to the influence of my parents, who spoke coherently and could spell and write a grammatical sentence. My mother left school at 14 to go into service, so in her case it was not due to an extensive education.

Gally and Marelli are also incomers. So many of us decided to stay here that Scotland must have its attractions, in spite of the weather and the midges. Is it perhaps Scotsmen?

Marelli Thu 20-Dec-12 12:25:33

There is nothing 'worn' under those kilts, Elegran, remember wink!
Until I was 10 I attended school in England then moved up to Scotland. The Fife children who I played with soon taught me their language - though they still thought I was 'posh' because I came from south of the border. smile
