You might think I'm joking BUT - picked up the turkey from the butcher's yesterday having asked for a 12-13lb one with the legs removed and boned. It looks awfully small!! shock Our butcher can usually be relied upon to give one more rather than less - not this time!!

Weighed it with all the bones and gubbins (fab word!!) - it struggled in at just over 11lb. There are 12 of us on Christmas Day and 6/8 on Boxing Day. I've cooked a gammon for Boxing Day as well but DH is now hurtling round the shops hunting for a turkey crown!! The red cabbage looks rather sparse too!

And I thought I was well organised!! confused

There is always something, isn't there kitty ? Mr P has just returned from the last shopping bit with the news that Lidl didn't have any of their Amaretto left shock !!

He has fortified himself with 2 slices of toast & pate and sallied forth to Asda. I love that man. grin

crimson Mon 24-Dec-12 11:44:10

..the river here is rising by the minute....sad....

kitty I forgot to pick up a red cabbage, but had a full jar of pickled red cabbage in the cupboard. Have just cooked it, drained and rinsed vinegar off first, bulked it up with grated apple and onion, and softened it in butter and dark brown sugar, then added nutmeg, splash of red wine vinegar and red wine, added a handful of raisins, seasoning and, thank goodness, it's turned out great. There's enough for 8 people at least and not everyone will have more than a spoonful, so it will stretch if some want lots.

whenim64 Mon 24-Dec-12 12:06:31

......also, pigs in blankets will stretch a turkey further. I've just made 40 of the little plump darlings - there's 6 adults and 2 children (and the dog under the table!) grin

Grannyknot Mon 24-Dec-12 12:51:42

Thank goodness I read this thread ... had completely forgotten about the "Lidl 3 Bird Roast" languishing in the freezer! Would have come across it some time after Christmas having wondered on the day why my offerings seemed so - mean!

glammanana Mon 24-Dec-12 13:04:00

granny I've not long taken out my Lidl roast you may find this year it is 4 bird but I can't remember what they all are i know there is chicken/turkey/duck but am not sure what other is ,we'll soon know to-morrow,I just need to finish off the turkey crown and the leg of pork and then hope everyone turn's up to eat it .when it must be that time of year Barney is guarding the oven just in case the turkey flies out on to his dish is your girl following you around expecting extra portions to drop into her paws ??

Movedalot Mon 24-Dec-12 13:21:08

I always find something in the fridge afterward that I forgot to serve. Am currently in panic mode as nothing has gone wrong yet so I must have forgotten something. Always feel better after I've had my panic! grin

Faye Mon 24-Dec-12 13:27:26

I hope you are okay crimson, keep us posted. It is Christmas morning here. I should go to sleep befor GS6 wakes us all up in five hours. confused

Grannyknot Mon 24-Dec-12 13:33:33

I am now procrastinating on here because beginning to lose it! DH gets very 'tense' when our quiet routine is unsettled by comings and goings and has just asked me the 400th rhetorical question today, which in this case was "Why is the front door open?" which translates into "Which idiot has left the front door open?" and I have to grit my teeth not to reply "How the blankety blank should I know?" So I go for the next best option which is to smile sweetly and shut it whilst holding his gaze saying "I have no idea, but there, it's closed now". [count to 10 emoticon].

nanapug Mon 24-Dec-12 13:40:33

Last year I decided to splash out on the most amazing chocolate mousse bell from M&S that was VERY expensive. I was sorting through the fridge on the day after Boxing Day and found the blessed thing, right at the back and completely forgotten. I remember thinking the desert table looked a bit bare on Boxing Day. Couldn't believe it......

whenim64 Mon 24-Dec-12 13:45:37

crimson how is it going? Any sign of the flood or rain abating? Hope it doesn't come any nearer [fingers crossed emoticon]

glamma my Nell is patrolling the kitchen like a sergeant major, checking the oven, fridge and bin in case something comes her way grin

crimson Mon 24-Dec-12 14:28:10

It's stopped raining at last. We're ok here but the other end of the village is looking dodgy. Can't get to Nottingham easily other than up the motorway and supposedly some trees have come down in another direction blocking the road. Funny thing, red cabbage. Always think it looks lovely to serve colour wise and the table looks wrong without it but always end up throwing loads of it away.

Marelli Mon 24-Dec-12 15:12:05

Hope you're able to get to Nottingham ok (my hometown), and that you aren't flooded at home either.
Anyone short of turkeys - they and the crowns were selling half-price at my local Aldi. I bought a stuffed pheasant wrapped in bacon for less than £5.00 smile

Movedalot Mon 24-Dec-12 15:21:46

Now very stressed as I seem to be ready grin I must have forgotten something?????????????? I've even found the 3 stockings which went walkabout a week ago causing me to make 3 more. Even set the dining room table for tomorrow, we can eat in the kitchen tonight.

How are things crimson

Well done Marelli, sounds like a bargain.

granjura Mon 24-Dec-12 15:29:58

How about a few Walkers or Dickinson and Morris pork pies for the Boxing day buffet to 'beef' it up a bit!

It will be fine and dandy I'm sure - have a lovely time in my favourite UK County smile

crimson Mon 24-Dec-12 15:36:08

Oh rats; all my local Lidls and Aldis are t'other side of the flooded bit sad. So near and yet so far.....sad. The S.O. is cooking the turkey at his house so tonight I'm going to cook a lot of vegetable stuff and tomorrow it's going to be chill out day. Hope there's something good on the telly tonight.

Ana Mon 24-Dec-12 15:48:35

Good system, crimson! (and it gets him out from under your feet wink)

nanapug Mon 24-Dec-12 16:11:02

Just popped to our local small Waitrose and it was almost empty. A very gentle experience. They even had turkeys and sprouts. (I only wanted a wholemeal loaf which I got).

crimson Mon 24-Dec-12 16:50:11

Good job I'm not having a social Christmas because, yet again I have an Elephant Man size cold sore on my lip. I get one every year; usually on the one occasion when I want to look semi decent. Have been zapping it with Zovirax for days bit it's still there. I have some colsor lotion which is amazing stuff except seems to work by burning half your mouth off but I'm too cowardly to use it.

Anne58 Mon 24-Dec-12 16:54:22

glamma I think the 4 bird roast is Aldi, not Lidl (I'm slumming it with the Lidl 3 bird version grin ) and it's turkey, goose, chicken and duck, but not neccessarily in that order!

Movedalot Mon 24-Dec-12 17:03:34

crimson L-lysine is supposed to keep them at bay but you will still get them if you go in the sun or eat chocolate. grin

Oldgreymare Mon 24-Dec-12 17:55:08

Crimson smile and flowers to cheer you up. Try gazing mysteriously over a fluttering fan, you have lovely smiley eyes!

crimson Mon 24-Dec-12 19:31:32

If I gaze myseriously at everyone they'll think I've been on the booze OGM! Funny you should mention chocolate, Moved, because I'm sitting here next to an empty Roses box with a tube of colsor lotion next to it.

Nelliemoser Mon 24-Dec-12 20:06:12

But Kitty if thats the weight boned isn't that s much as you would have had anyway? So asks a vegetarian who has eaten meat in 23 years.

I hope it works.
