I am reluctant to say anyone should be prevented from continuing to work past 65 on the grounds of their date of birth. These days many people retain their sharp wits and reasonable health into their 80s.
There are a few notable examples in the media that are going on and on. And on. The only ones I can think of are men. This in part reflects the poverty of opportunity for women of their generation. But the BBC is not immune to agism.
Off the top of my head the three the BBC keep using are:
Attenborough 86
John Humphries 69
Bruce Forsythe 84
I went through an anti Attenborough phase and have come out the other side.
Would any of these be still going if they were women? Is it time for any or them, or anyone else, to step down now and give someone else a chance? And are there any other suggestions?

What exactly was it that you didn't know about her jO5 ?

Never thought of him as a rock god until I read the book; he was, to me, just someone in a very famous band [not that he proclaimed himself as such; it just became blindingly obvious]. Want to lie on the sofa and play the music so I can really listen to it [on my sooer dooper stereo wink...when I get my living room back. [Keith, that is, not Oddie..but Oddie did give us The Goodies for which I am very grateful..in some ways prefer them to Monty Python blush].

Ana Mon 31-Dec-12 17:01:01

He was becoming very Oddie during the last series, wasn't he? Not to mention darned rude! hmm

whenim64 Mon 31-Dec-12 16:54:57

crimson yes, you're going to enjoy all that Stones music. Keith Richards is so talented. I loved his book.

JessM Mon 31-Dec-12 16:45:23

Thing to be cheerful about - Packham has replaced Oddie. Oddie by name and Oddie by behaviour when presenting a TV programme. That Kate must be one of the most tolerant women on the planet!

crimson Mon 31-Dec-12 16:43:01

Keith Richards is still one of the coolest guys on the planet even at his age [and probably one of the nicest if his book is anything to go by]. As someone that has only just developed a liking for the Stones' music, I've got a huge back catalogue to plough through. Lucky me! Wonder how Clare's first day fronting C4 racing will go tomorrow? Good luck to her [but I will miss Francome sad].

Grannyknot Mon 31-Dec-12 16:36:16

I also like Chris Packham! I still love hearing the first bars of 'Satisfaction' - takes me back to being 16, but can't be doing with the 'I'm still edgy even though I'm 70" try hard "Keef". Okay I'll grant Gyles a pass smile

Nonu Mon 31-Dec-12 15:36:10

Clare has certainly lost weight , it suits her .

kittylester Mon 31-Dec-12 14:46:33

Alice Arnold has gone freelance - Claire Balding said so in a magazine article.

crimson Mon 31-Dec-12 14:22:29

He is a cutie Ella wink....

jO5 Mon 31-Dec-12 14:19:18

Oh. Didn't know this. about Alice Arnold

Ella46 Mon 31-Dec-12 14:18:00

I like Chris Packham blush

crimson Mon 31-Dec-12 14:16:06

When he was a child he used to collect those balls that owls vomit out [He's still got a lot of them; he showed us some!]. He is obsessed [in a nice way].

grannyactivist Mon 31-Dec-12 14:15:38

I don't think that anyone should retire on the grounds of age alone; just on their ability to continue to do the job well. wink

jO5 Mon 31-Dec-12 14:15:29

janeainsworth Alice Arnold has gone. I heard her say goodbye at the close of programmes the other night.

glammanana Mon 31-Dec-12 14:12:23

Ah crimson I had forgotten about Chris Packham he could be a contender alright couldn't he ?
smile

Gally Mon 31-Dec-12 14:10:41

Jeremy Clarkson - every paper I open, his face is staring back at me - I've even stopped the Sunday Times because it upsets my breakfast.

Bruce Forsyth definitely past his best, if ever there was a best! He should have gone years ago - he just isn't funny any more.
PeterPan Cliff Richard just doesn't know when to stop either
In fact, any ageing rock/film/television/radio 'personality' - they should be intelligent enough to know when to stop and if they don't, then Grannies Unite will tell them grin

crimson Mon 31-Dec-12 14:05:56

We went to a talk given by Chris Packham a couple of years ago; admittedly hasn't got the Attenborough charisma but his enthusiasm is infectious.

janeainsworth Mon 31-Dec-12 13:58:04

Oh grannyknot I can't agree about Gyles Brandreth - I have heard him speak after two professional dinners and he was brilliant.
He managed to combine humour with a serious message, did his research well and had a go at the people on the top table without being too offensive.
In contrast Marcus Brigstocke the following year was dreadful.
I am going to no doubt incur everyone's wrath by requesting the removal of Alice Arnold from the Radio 4 newsreaders. I really dislike her rasping tones especially when they are overlaid with smugness.
Bring back Charlotte Green and Harriet Cass!

glammanana Mon 31-Dec-12 13:55:35

Who would we have to replace David Attenborough there imo is no one out there who has the charisma of the man,Paul McCartney should retire even though I am a die hard Beatles fan from the very beginning his voice has changed dramactically and not for the better, surely he doesn't need to keep performing,he may be better being involved with more LIPA type projects to help up and coming young musicians of the future as what he should know about the business is invaluable.

jO5 Mon 31-Dec-12 13:38:25

Oh crimson! sad

whenim64 Mon 31-Dec-12 13:14:58

Hands off the Rolling Stones! grin Having received Chrstmas presents of their commemorative 50 year book and their new CD set, which I have been playing in my car, I am reminded how talented and exciting they still are.

Cliff Richard, Elton John and Paul McCartney are welome to retire, but not the Stones. Peace grin

crimson Mon 31-Dec-12 13:11:06

I nominate ME! [please.....]

Grannyknot Mon 31-Dec-12 12:54:13

Agree re Stephen Fry, he can have a sabbatical if he is too young to retire. Please also retire all the Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond, Gyles Brandeth (that leer!) and definitely Cliff.

MiceElf Mon 31-Dec-12 12:20:30

Stephen Fry was on the television 189 times over the Christmas season. I'd love to pack him off to a desert island with no media of any description.
