Decorations down and away!

For many years now we've started the New Year by taking down ALL the decorations, tree, cards etc on January 1st. The house is back to 'normal' and everything seems fresh and uncluttered. There's just a couple of Christmas bags in the corner with presents that need putting away [ours] or delivering blush. We started it after my dear old mum died shortly before Christmas. I had no heart for all the trappings and just wanted everything down as soon as was possible. I do it now to make a fresh start to the year. Does anyone leave them up until the 6th? I can't imagine now, going back to work and coming home to a house still bedecked with lights and tinsel.

moomin, you'll be feeling quite gloomy now - and surrounded by damp tissues too shock! Hope you soon feel much better. smile xx

number, maybe that's what's been the matter - you've had your decorations up for too long grin!

They went up on 24th and came down yesterday, all except for the crib which will stay until 6th (Feast of the Epiphany which is 12th night!). So pleased they are all packed away now, except for 1 stray box which I found lurking today. I will have to unpack all the rest again tomorrow to get this box to fit in!! Thought it went too well yesterday! hmm

Tewlfth night is the night before twelfth day, apparently mrshat! wink

I love our Christmas lights - the tree will stay as long as possible.

I was talking to DGS (4) today about when they might come down - he said he thought it was a shame to see them go but he quite enjoys that actual process of taking them down and putting the tree to bed for another year. So I must make sure that he is here when we do it.

I hate to see it all come down - it is such a lovely time of year.

Ana You see what happens when you nitpick grin ....you get everyone worrying grin

Ana Wed 02-Jan-13 18:00:20

I know, Ella! hmm I really should have made a New Year's resolution not to nit-pick, but I can't help myself....it's an obsession with detail, I think confused

Marelli Wed 02-Jan-13 18:23:18

Will I, won't I....confused

Wasn't going to do much 'til DS said they would be down over 'New Year', they set off today so 'went for broke' and despatched tree and decorations.

Tree now propped up in garden waiting to be re-cycled! Will do hall tomorrow, making sure something is left for 12th night (whenever that is, see previous posts!) Particularly pleased with hall as mostly decorated with 'greenery' from garden.

Big 'clean up' also starts tomorrow.....hmm

marelli just do it, does it not say they have to be down before the 12th night grin

glassortwo Wed 02-Jan-13 19:30:25

moomin and harri flowers

Ana Wed 02-Jan-13 19:35:29

Yes, Marelli - it's not bad luck if you take them down before, just after....grin

Marelli Wed 02-Jan-13 19:38:29

I might just bite the bullet, then [brave emoticon]!

Ana Wed 02-Jan-13 19:39:41

Which way are you going...? [tenterhooks emoticon]

Marelli Wed 02-Jan-13 19:46:12

Towards the front room and the Christmas tree....

mrshat Wed 02-Jan-13 19:46:34

Thanks Ana. I've lived in blissful ignorance for the last 65 years, so why change the habits of a lifetime!!grin

Ana Wed 02-Jan-13 20:11:29

I do my best, mrshat, one can do no more...grin

yogagran Wed 02-Jan-13 21:10:42

Took ours down a couple of days ago. For the last few years we have had a growing tree in a huge pot that we lug in for Christmas. I think a week indoors is plenty for it and it's probably gasping for some cool air by the end of the week, so it's gone back out again. Will spend a week under the shelter of the porch so it doesn't have too much of a shock then it will stand by the front door till next year (assuming it survives as I can be very forgetful about watering it)

Marelli Wed 02-Jan-13 21:13:41

Next door neighbours have a growing Christmas tree, yogagran. It's done really well for the last 3 years or so (for some reason they call it Norman - grin)

nanaej Wed 02-Jan-13 22:06:42

All down and put away today... I agree the decs should go up 23/24 December and down 5/6 Jan but sometimes social events dictate a day or two either leeway either end here!

nanaej Wed 02-Jan-13 22:07:25

oops too many eithers!hmm

Fontana Thu 03-Jan-13 08:39:02

Our decks are coming down tonight, the Christmas food has all gone...so as you say, back to normal, whatever that is ...x

harrigran Thu 03-Jan-13 12:50:21

Took down my minimalist decorations, steel snowflakes that hung from chandeler and four small silver christmas trees that sat on window sills. Did not miss the big tree one bit.

Oldgreymare Thu 03-Jan-13 14:01:26

The trouble with taking down the decs is that it is followed by an unseasonal urge to 'Spring clean'.... but without the energy to do so (all expended on a total of 7 days of visitors!).... I just want to go to sleep until the weather warms up and daylight hours are longer!

Oh I HATE January. I really want to hibernate sad.
