Made some bread, made some lentil soup, sawed, lopped and yanked a couple of dozen rhododendron branches off and shredded them, pulled a muscle in the process, divested self of wet muddy clothing including wool gloves topped by industrial strength rubber gloves, and the other paraphernalia of keeping warm and dry in Scotland in winter, showered, put a wash on, made coffee, sat down with feet up.

"Nufff d-d-day, I fink!" as DD used to say when she was two.

Still have to wash-up and make dinner but I'm slobbing until that cannot be put off any longer.

Sorry - my last was in reply to your previous! I'm still none the wiser, and will google it to save face...wink

Well, you see, the target faces are printed on square paper (sometimes reinforced paper) but they are circular, so there are bare white bits at the corners - - > petticoats smile

Aah! I'm with you! Thanks, Bags smile

Ana Sat 05-Jan-13 19:56:13

So, you get prizes for the most 'failures'? confused. Or is it a skill in itself...?

Bags Sat 05-Jan-13 20:17:36

I think it's to encourage beginners and kids.

Plus, shooting longbow and barebow is quite hard, especially if you're used to using a sight.

Ana Sat 05-Jan-13 20:39:43

I'm sure it is. I hope you're going for it!

Today I actually left the house and went to tea at my sister's, my entire family were there and it was lovely. GD1 got a plastic spider out of a cracker and she spent hours playing with it, GD2 played for an hour with a piece of ribbon and a bow. Guess what I am giving my GC next year ?

I went out into the garden and did some weeding in early January!

I also mended the compost bins by making two replacement "stays" to keep the bin sides from falling sideways under the weight of the compost. Its amazing what a woman can make with a saw, hammer and nails and some tree stakes. It also involved digging quite a lot of the ripening compost out to get the bin side vertical again. I am feeling pleased with myself.

An evening of wine and oysters, pomegranate salad, salmon and goats cheese and a marvellous butternut and parsley risotto, celebrating the New Year with friends.
We argued about discussed GM crops, text speak, education for women, scientific progress and the influence of China in Africa. Invigorating and thought provoking.
How I have missed such evenings!! Wonderful. smile

Today I dismantled 'Christmas'; moved the furniture around in the sitting room; did lots and lots of cupboard and drawer tidying; put the Dyson vacuum to work; prepared lunch and dinner (plus made a huge rice pudding to use up leftover Christmas cream with a best before date of Dec 29 - tastes yummy); folded and sorted every bit of spare bedlinen in the house (having yesterday washed said bedlinen); ordered a new sideboard to match the new coffee table and cupboard I bought a couple of weeks ago (yay - it's taken me 26 years to get some brand new furniture, but now I'm on a roll and I'm unstoppable!!!) - and then sat down with the Wonderful man to watch Borgen. 'Twas a good day. grin

Butty even though I'm stuffed full with rice pudding I'm licking my lips at the description of your delicious meal; the risotto sounds right up my street. smile

Today I have been mostly awake, and I have had enough of it! Moved into the spare room at about 2.00, as the knee was uncomfortable and I was conscious of wriggling around. In "Superwoman" Shirley Conran said that everyone should spend a night in their spare room; I now see why. I also see why the new mattresses were so cheap! It was so uncomfortable in there, and I wasn't sleepy and I got more and more ** off. I am now downstairs on the settee.

Will buy either better mattresses or good toppers. What do you lot think?

Another extremely hot day today. Apparently the temperature in the sun got up to 48C yesterday. confused I was able to have a look at old cottage in the middle of a huge wheat farm in the Mallee, which is being restored. It had lovely old ceiling roses, which hopefully will be kept. It is not as old as the miner's cottage I am restoring with SIL, but needs lots of work.

RINKY Sun 06-Jan-13 08:13:02

Ariadne.....think you need to ask who ever sleeps in your spare room most.
How long do they spend there? A couple of nights is ok in a not too good a bed for the young but I have spent three weeks in a not terribly comfortable bed and am dying to get to my own! Plus have been used to double for long time and this is single. Mattress toppers are ok if the bed is not slept in too often I think.

Thank you all for the good wishes! I had a good day with visitors, phone calls and a visit to mum who was, mostly, on good form. DH appears to still love me despite my age. smile

Today, I feel awful!! Every joint in my arms, legs, hands and feet aches and I am making lots of trips to the loo. If this is getting older, you can keep itsad

We were supposed to be taking DGS1 and DGD1 to the panto this afternoon, with lunch beforehand, but gave had to give the tickets to DD1 and SiL. sadsad

I am an early riser by nature so it is no hardship to be up and out by 7am walking the hounds. I love the solitude of the early morning, the freshness and the birds singing.

I've pegged out my washing, trimmed next door neighbours Laurel hedge (just a little bit every now and then). Made breakfast and took it back up to bed, completed an online NHS survey and made my first visit of the day to gransnet.

kitty Hope you feel better soon

Faye Sun 06-Jan-13 09:14:04

kitty I hope you feel better soon and Happy Birthday for yesterday. flowers

Nelliemoser Sun 06-Jan-13 09:18:57

Ariadne We have "spare beds" that were my parents. One pull out bed under the other. I understand they are dreadful to sleep in the pull out one is too small and the mattresses are very hard, not firm, just very poorly padded.

I would think about trying a mattress topper but rather investing in one can you borrow one to see if it actually makes enough difference to be worth the money?

I am now being tempted by an Ikea sofa bed whic will at least be near standard double size.
How about you stay in the proper bed and let your OH try the spare room bed? Then you would probably have him keen to improve it.

jeni Sun 06-Jan-13 12:00:30

Oh dear Kitty that doesn't sound like fun.

soop Sun 06-Jan-13 12:31:21

Sorry to hear that you're unwell, kitty. How disappointing that you've had to forego the pantomime. flowers
