'Loose' and 'Lose'.

I would never correct any other member's spelling, but I have noticed that many people confuse these two words. 'Loose' is the opposite of 'tight' - the verb is 'to loosen', as in 'I had to loosen my waist band'.
'Lose' is the opposite of 'gain' or 'find', so you 'lose weight'.
I don't know why the confusion has arisen as the two words are pronounced quite differently - 'loose' rhymes with 'moose' and 'lose' rhymes with 'muse'.
I trust nobody will take offence at my pointing out this common error.

I'm speaking for myself, gknot. You know, saying what I think.

You are quite wrong, Movedalot - there have been many times in the past year when every single post I made was jumped upon by the same few people, and I was extremely grateful for all the support I received. As that all happened before you joined, you could not be expected to know about it.

Movedalot Wed 09-Jan-13 14:04:19

I stand corrected - again!

The fact that some people may not remember which spelling /word to use may not be to do with a bad education! Maybe some posters have a specific learning difficulty /dylexia and find it very hard to identify differences such as of/off, there, their, they're, lose/loose. But handy phrases, such as Bags demonstrated can help ..so good idea to share and identify common errors.
I always try to tell someone if they have food stuck on a tooth or dress in knickers.. and kindly pointing out word errors is similar... it stops embarrassment and hopefully not continued posting!

I make frequent errors due to poor typing skills and lack of checking.. but am also a poor speller!

Thanks Bags, was #justsaying.

Nonu Wed 09-Jan-13 14:20:57

I thought I read some back that it was not forum etiquette , to correct another poster .

Could be wrong !

hmmm

Bags Wed 09-Jan-13 14:22:49

No prob, gknot smile

Bags Wed 09-Jan-13 14:25:24

You are right, nonu, and if you read the OP you will see that no poster was corrected. A useful grammatical distinction was highlighted and the OP went out of her way to be apologetic about it so that no-one could possibly feel personally "corrected".

Only just got back to this, and I would like to say that I would never have mentioned this (and I'm fairly sure that Greatnan wouldn't either) if it was only one person posting it.
However, it happens such a lot.......... stopping digging now grin

Movedalot Wed 09-Jan-13 14:29:14

Didn't someone say it was obvious who it was about? Not to me it wasn't but I don't read all threads.

Nanado Wed 09-Jan-13 14:29:42

geatnon is backgrin

Movedalot Wed 09-Jan-13 14:31:17

Nonoda grin

Ella46 Wed 09-Jan-13 14:38:46

I read most of them but it's not obvious to me either! Not important, it was a general observation.

Nanado Wed 09-Jan-13 14:40:37

movedalot wink wasn't around earlier!!!! sad You make me sound like my MIL known as NanaNono, because she was so negative!

Grannyknot Wed 09-Jan-13 14:40:55

This thread made me realise - it doesn't matter how many helpful hints I give my husband to distinguish between e.g. "off" and "of" - because he doesn't get it - he doesn't get it! BAnd what's more, if he did, he wouldn't make that error! [lightbulb moment]. For those who do get it, it's simplesh. For others, never will be.

Grannyknot Wed 09-Jan-13 14:42:03

That should be 'And' not 'BAnd'. The use of the word 'simplesh' is deliberate. grin

Movedalot Wed 09-Jan-13 14:57:42

Didn't mean to do that Nanado just meant to follow your lead. smile

Nanado Wed 09-Jan-13 15:07:54

Just teasing move I got it in one..and so did you wink

Ana Wed 09-Jan-13 15:12:30

Cliqueyness alert!! grin

I reckon the best way to improve any little shortcomings in spelling and grammar (everyone has a blind spot somewhere) is to read the correct version so many times that it becomes second nature to use that. Reading a lot of decently-written books helps, and so does good but not harsh teaching from the start of school.

Some people absorb spellings more easily than others, perhaps because their brains are more visual, but others find sayings like "I hope you can hop on one foot" or "Here is almost there" useful.

Greatnan was not picking on anyone - I have seen loose (to rhyme with goose and moose) when I thought the poster meant lose (to rhyme with booze and shoes) but I could not tell you where so no-one needs to feel got-at.

Should a loose goose try to lose the booze? No, because that will just make it type "looze" - what a daft language!

Nanado Wed 09-Jan-13 15:15:25

Oh no! I hope not! That doesn't happen on GN.

annodomini Wed 09-Jan-13 15:43:14

No individual need feel 'got at' because the error has occurred throughout many posts by more than one g'netter. In fact, it was always obvious to me what the poster meant and as long as the context is clear, I'm not going to get my red pen out.

jeni Wed 09-Jan-13 15:50:28

I cor spel, it's wot cums from being a wedgeburyite!grin

annodomini Wed 09-Jan-13 16:17:05

It's a well known fact that doctors can't spell, jeni; at least the one in my family can't. grin
