I think I have had enough of this now, but before I leave the thread I would like to clear up some misconceptions.
1. I have never criticised the spelling or grammar of any individual member.
2. The confusion between these two words seems to be very common.
3. I thought people would be glad of a simple explanation of the difference.
4. I am an experienced remedial teacher and several members of my own family are dyslexic - so I know full well that difficulties with spelling do not reflect low intelligence or bad education.

Now I will leave my usual detractors to carry on the good work!

A propos of nothing really except rhyming with loose - I just read a genuine question and answer from a TV quiz, which went thus:

- Q. What was Ghandi's first name?
- A. Goosie!

What was that all about????

To be fair I read an article by a clever person who said when he was on a quiz show his brain just went to mush because of the stress (it was Mastermind I think).

My favourite was when a contestant was asked which poet wrote 'Oh I wish I'd looked after me teeth' (Pam Ayres) and the answer given was 'Wordsworth'.

The locals call it 'Wedgebury' just as the locals where I live in Portishead call it Posset!

I met one yesterdy Jeni small world. We were 'builder sitting' for our son in Edgbaston and I suggested he was local, he was most put out! Very proud that he was from The Black Country. It looks like he did a good job, perhaps it was the huge mugs of tea and biscuits i fed him?

You can't insult a Black Country person more than to accuse them of being a brummy we ARE VERY PROUD of our heritage!

So I found out! Then they started talking about football so I went upstairs out of the cold.

Jeni no idea! It was football so I tuned out. DH is Aston Villa and I know they were both moaning, does that give you a clue? They did agree before the football that Midland people have glass half empty rather than half full so that might be why they were unhappy.
