Should payment towards the Royal Family be made voluntary?.

As many people do not want the Royal Family these days I think that no tax money should be used to pay for the royal family.
What they should have is voluntary contributions from people who want the Royal Family and wish to pay.

If we were able to decide on what to spend our taxes, then I would not want my taxes to go to those skivers and layabouts who refuse to work and would rather be supported by the taxpayers. I would also not want my taxes to go to foreigners who come here and claim benefits and health benefits. Just think how much money the government would save if we didn't have to pay for these people.

I will probably be stamped on now!

Forgot to say that I would pay for the Royal Family. Better than a President and probably cheaper!!

Marelli Fri 01-Feb-13 13:07:49

With you there, anno. Brings it into perspective.

I may not get the president I want in the same way that I don't always get the government I want but at least I'd have a choice. It wouldn't be down to an accident of birth.

By the way popped into London last Saturday to check out the property I part own but apparently I'm not allowed to pop in to check my tenant is keeping it in good order. Not even if I send a letter giving one month notice. Which I thought was odd seeing my landlord's agent visits me every six months.

Oh well will just have to trust that my tenant Elizabeth Windsor and her family are treating it with respect.

I thought that property belonged to the Crown Estates -

'In the United Kingdom, the Crown Estate is a property portfolio owned by the Crown. Although still belonging to the monarch and inherent with the accession of the throne, it is no longer the private property of the reigning monarch and cannot be sold by him/her, nor do the revenues from it belong to the monarch personally (as each monarch, upon accession, surrenders the surplus revenues in return for an annual grant known as the Civil List). It is managed by an independent organisation headed by the Crown Estate Commissioners. The surplus revenue from the Estate is paid each year to HM Treasury. The Crown Estate is formally accountable to Parliament, to which it makes an annual report. '

It doesn't say it belongs to we taxpayers.

absent what is that saying about a dairy product with a fairly low melting point that nevertheless sometimes remains in a solid state inside your oral cavity? grin

Movedalot Fri 01-Feb-13 17:23:53

When we lived in a house on the Crown Estate the deeds said that he Maj could come into our house any time she liked!

Anyone remember Margo in the Council office saying what she would and would not pay for?

an avalanche of pm's, why pm's, have you been nominated to comment as you are the most diplomatic.

absent Fri 01-Feb-13 17:33:11

Ho, ho, ho *Mey. As a new member, you wouldn't be familiar with some of the more forceful discussions that have taken place on Gransnet. There must be at least 30 people I could name, without even thinking, who would explode with fury at the suggestion that I am diplomatic; and there must be at least another 30 who would explode with laughter. grin.

No one is every nominated to comment on anything as far as I know. I was just answering your question. I might be wrong, but I think this is the second time you have asked it so I was just being helpful.

Bags Fri 01-Feb-13 17:42:49

Explosion at thought of absent as diplomatic has just occurred (laughter variety!) grin

Quoting Absent re Cheelu - " harmless, if unimaginative and rather banal" and " a kind and simple soul".

Well, if she was driven away, she sure as hell won't come back after that! grin

Oh sorry absent thank you for that, I have asked before but forgot what Thread it was that I asked on!!!smile

but not nice that someone was driven away,

I was actually thinking today that being a GN member is like being on antibiotics, its good as you do get support from people but there are some people that can be harsh and dont think before they post and they are the horrible side effects of.

absent still not sure why you got a barage of PM re chelu

vampirequeen Fri 01-Feb-13 18:26:16

The Crown Estate is owned by the Queen ‘in right of the Crown’. In other words, in an official capacity. She no more owns the Crown Estate personally than David Cameron owns the flat above 10 Downing Street. If she ceases to be Queen she ceases to ‘own’ the Crown Estate.

The same is true of the royal palaces and the art collection.

The Crown is something else altogether. The Crown does not ‘belong’ to the Queen. It is an institution of state and it belongs to the nation. Since 1689 parliament has had complete authority over who the Crown passes to and how its powers will be exercised

VQ ??? what r u on about

Lilygran Fri 01-Feb-13 18:53:28

I think Frank's premise is questionable. How does he know 'many people don't want the Royal Family' ? Evidence, please.

Mey Fri 01-Feb-13 19:12:56

I think people are proud of The Royal Family, I know I am, but not as keen as they were to have to foot the bill.

merlotgran Fri 01-Feb-13 19:19:26

I don't regard 62p as footing the bill. hmm

gracesmum Fri 01-Feb-13 19:23:48
