Lara is 20 and in her third year of a nursing degree in Nelson, New Zealand. Her fiance, Sam. followed her over and is now working as a personal trainer until she completes her course, and they have a flat in Nelson and a little car, all bought from their own earnings. Once she is working, he will probably take a degree in physiotherapy, although he is very happy doing his present job and has already had promotion.
They entered a Love Story contest in the local paper and got through to the seven finalists - they won about 300 pounds for jewellery and if they win they will get another 500 pounds.

Here is her story, followed by the link for voting:

Sam and Lara.

Sam and I met through mutual friends at high school. He tells me now that the attraction was instant, however his best friend at the time had a thing for me, so under the strict influence of the teenage "boys code," it wasn’t until Sam saved his friend from an oncoming car that he was allowed to ask me on a date.

Having finally plucked up the courage Sam asked me (in possibly the least romantic place ever) at our local swimming pool in the UK. I hadn’t seen Sam in that way before, but he was kind and more mature than the other boys I knew. And so we began dating at age 14.

Sam was my first boyfriend, and initially I’ll admit I didn’t think much of it. But after 3 weeks of dating I became ill with the flu. After not hearing from me, Sam rang, and found out I was unwell. He lived two villages away, and being only 14 had no car. Nevertheless, through snow and below freezing temperatures, he walked for 2 hours to bring me a teddy bear, a film and chocolate. Well, they say the way to a girl’s heart is through her stomach, and when I opened the door to find him practically on the brink of hypothermia, my heart melted.

Then, when I was 17 and Sam 18, my father got a job in New Zealand. Telling Sam that I was moving was one of the hardest things I've had to do. Sam promised me that he would follow when he finished school.

Sam rang every day, which meant being awake at all kinds of hours, but I desperately needed that familiar voice. The long distance was tough, but true to his word, after 9 months, Sam finished his exams and the very same week was on a flight to NZ.

When he arrived at the airport, jet-lagged and carrying all his worldly possessions, ready to start a new life with me on the other side of the world, I couldn't help but be reminded of that first day I began to fall for him; there was truly no distance he wouldn't go for me.

At the beginning of 2012 we moved into our first place together, with Sam working full-time to support me as I complete the third and final year of my nursing degree. We are very much looking forward to the next chapter in our lives and our many more adventures to come!

Lara and Sam now have votes from France, England, Scotland, Switzerland and New Zealand - I think they are the only couple to have gone international! Several members of my two expat forums have now voted for them.

Greatnan, you've done a brilliant job getting the vote in.

Just think of what you might have accomplished if you had managed a political party!

baubles Sat 16-Mar-13 08:04:17

You're doing a great job for your GD smile

Grannyknot Sat 16-Mar-13 08:04:30

A well deserved vote from me x

Ella46 Sat 16-Mar-13 08:37:26

They are a lovely couple....one vote here!

Maybe even Frank will vote? grin

Greatnan Sat 16-Mar-13 20:21:39

They came to dinner last night and we all spent at least an hour watching the latest brood of chicks hatch out of their eggs. If Lara becomes a midwife eventually, I hope she is less emotional than she was when the little wet bundle finally managed to make it!

whenim64 Sat 16-Mar-13 20:45:49

A birth is a birth Greatnan. grin Are these chicks imprinted on you now? They'll be following you home to France! grin

Grannyeggs Sat 16-Mar-13 21:25:33

Have just voted.

Nonny Sun 17-Mar-13 12:33:19

I've voted!

granjura Sun 17-Mar-13 13:08:50

I've voted of course.

But I have to say I feel a bit ambiguous about it. I've been asked many a time to do this for friends and relatives, but feel that a competition, be it for photos, stories, etc, should get votes without knowing who the taker/writer is, and for the best picture, or best story, and not on how many people they know and will vote. Lovely story - but of course have no idea how good the other stories are, and in the previous case, how good the other photos were as compared to my niece's. I could of course read all the stories in this case, but I haven't got the time - so voted just because you are a good friend and the story was lovely...

Hope you don't mind me saying this GN- this is not personal but a comment about the concept in general smile

I would not want anyone to vote against their conscience - all the stories are short and can easily be read. Several people have said that Lara's is the best, so they have voted for it. I would not be offended if anyone decided not to vote, or to vote for a different story. However, since all the other entrants are native New Zealanders, who presumably know a lot more people than Lara, who has only been here just over two years, it seemed reasonable to even things up a bit by putting her story in a wider field.

I have thought further about Juragran's points and I don't believe that the other six finalists (all of whom are already married, so won't be spending the vouchers on an engagement ring) will not be asking their own friends and relatives to vote for them. I think it is fair for me to ask for Lara and Sam to be given the same chance.

Ella46 Sun 17-Mar-13 19:08:37

Greatnan....it's family....all's fair in love and family! smile

Fondasharing Sun 17-Mar-13 19:29:48

Done Greatnan! Sorry it took me so long, I have only just caught up with some of the stories here on Gransnet.

Good luck to them, what a lovely, inspiring story.

I hope Lara and Sam win. Rooting for them!

granjura Sun 17-Mar-13 22:12:59

Agreed Greatnan - my point is not about you asking, but about the general concept of such competitions. I hope they win, of course.

Greatnan Mon 18-Mar-13 03:34:47

I think you will find that all competitions which rely on public votes accept that contestants will canvass for votes and I don't suppose this is any different. And I still think Lara's is the best story!

Lara is amazed and delighted that so many of you have taken the trouble to vote for her and asks me to pass on her sincere thanks. I have been telling my family for a long time what a great forum this is, and now they believe me!

MiceElf Mon 18-Mar-13 18:46:55

She's a lovely lass.

A little late as I've only just caught up with GN - but just to let you know that my vote has been added for Lara and Sam. Let us know how they get on

dustyangel Tue 19-Mar-13 14:13:43

I've only just got back to GN as well, but I've voted now. I've read and enjoyed Lara's story and I hope carries on writing. (and wins of course!)
