…the first day of spring according to the Meteorological Office. I don't know about the weather where you are but it's like mid-winter here.

… International Happiness Day

…and also Budget Day.

Enough said.

If the roads had not been closed you could have joined the cavalcade, Frank

So could a million other cars and lorries. That would have successfully jammed up the whole shebang, and the rest of London too.

It wasn't closed for the wedding guests, it was so that the inevitable traffic jams were at least partly under control. Blame all the idiots who would certainly have tried to get their fifteen minutes of fame.

Hi Notso

Again I don't want to pay.
I am a pensioner but some of my pension is taxed at 40% so I think I am paying more than 55p.

Ana Wed 20-Mar-13 11:15:16

Does it work that way, though? You mean millionaires might be paying £1 or even more a year towards the upkeep of the royals?

HUNTERF Wed 20-Mar-13 11:32:21

Annie

A million £'s is not much these days.
You only have to be 60 with a £20,000 per annum occupational pension which has a value of £400,000 as you are expected to live 20 years after 60 for pension purpose, a house worth £300,000 and savings of £300,000 and you are a millionaire.
A lot of people have got that but they are not in a position to go on an exotic holiday for example 4 times a year.

Frank

Elegran Wed 20-Mar-13 11:40:16

They could squeeze quite a few holidays out of that £300,000, Frank The imterest on it would be something like £8,000 to £9,000 a year.

Ana Wed 20-Mar-13 11:44:35

Who's Annie?

Ariadne Wed 20-Mar-13 11:47:10

What a left wing point of view from Frank; I'd never have put him down as a republican! Mind you, it's still about money...

soop Wed 20-Mar-13 12:12:17

Frank Without your hourly input, this forum would seem almost sane. grin

Notso Wed 20-Mar-13 12:15:31

Write to the Palace Frank and get them to send you a couple of packets of crisps. That'll even things up a bit.

Anne58 Wed 20-Mar-13 12:24:18

Dark grey sky in Cheshire but not raining or snowing. Are you in the frozen north east absent ?

soop Wed 20-Mar-13 16:54:18

Have just this minute received a most favourable response from a builder. Early days, I know, but we're both uplifted. May need to celebrate with a wee dram later. grin

Fingers crossed for you soop.

Nelliemoser North-east and definitely chilly, but we do a little bit micro-climate in Darlington, so fingers crossed. It's definitely nippy outside right now though.

Bags Wed 20-Mar-13 18:12:49

Toes crossed also, soop smile

soop Wed 20-Mar-13 18:14:48

Thank you. For four months, we've been hoping for a favourable response. Mr soop needs to put the finishing touches to his drawings, after which, we trot off to present our case to the planners. So far, they've been most helpful. If all goes well, we put the house officially on the market. To be honest, I think that it will be well into next spring before the build is completed. It's all down to finding the right buyer...and not being let down at the eleventh hour. Never the less, tonight, we raise a glass of cheer. Slainte! smile
