I am totally 'gobsmacked'

Ariadne Tue 07-May-13 06:27:57

Good morning, Kitty.

Really? Haven't switched the news on yet. My goodness, who else?

PRINTMISS Tue 07-May-13 07:40:03

Is this turning into a farce?

glammanana Tue 07-May-13 07:52:53

According to speculations there are a quiet a few more yet.

Ella46 Tue 07-May-13 08:03:45

I've been waiting for this one, no particular reason, but I'm still shocked that it was a boy!

gracesmum Tue 07-May-13 12:22:59

I am too. It seems either 1) everybody in the media or entertainment is a sex pest/paedophile or 2) there are some --possibly spurious--strange accusations in amongst the genuine ones. Either way - not a good situation.

gracesmum Tue 07-May-13 12:24:02

Re reading ella46 I meant I am gobsmacked too. What do you know that I don't ella46?

janeainsworth Tue 07-May-13 12:26:11

I'm struggling to think of a comedian/celebrity of that era who didn't give me the creeps.

gillybob Tue 07-May-13 12:59:51

Me too janeainsworth without naming names (obviously) I could think of quite a few more who "creeped me out" not in the slightest bit surprised about this one though.

Aka Tue 07-May-13 13:00:21

Every time I see a white-haired entertainer, newsreader, etc. now, i start wondering 'are they next'?

gillybob Tue 07-May-13 13:05:08

Or in the case of some, dyed hair and wigs! grin

Aka Tue 07-May-13 13:13:15

I'm worried that Father Christmas will be next!

annodomini Tue 07-May-13 13:57:52

I'm sure Father Christmas already has been arrested somewhere in the world!

Deedaa Tue 07-May-13 16:08:23

Just thinking how good Roy Hudd was in Doctors today and then I wondered is someone like him going to be next?

Mishap Tue 07-May-13 18:20:13

It is interesting - on the one hand it feels as though it is becoming a bit of a farce and you just do not know who will be next; but on the other it does seem to say that there was a culture of star worship in the 70s and 80s that left people like this feeling that they could do anything they wanted and it would be covered up.

I hope that those who are coming forward to report what happened to them will feel that they are now being fairly treated.

You cannot but wonder who else might be quaking in their boots waiting for the axe to fall.

I was working in a Birmingham hospital in the 70s and a local TV celeb came there for some reason that I have forgotten. The first thing he wanted to know was whether any girls had been lined up for him - I was very shocked!

merlotgran Tue 07-May-13 18:52:18

When we visited mum last week my brother and I were speculating on who would be next. Jimmy Tarbuck was mentioned along with a few others. We weren't sure if mum understood what we were talking about but had a good laugh when she shouted out, ARTHUR ASKEY shock

KatyK Tue 07-May-13 18:56:11

Not that this is anything to do with allegations against him but my sister was working at a celebrity golf event some years ago and she said Jimmy Tarbuck was the only celeb who wouldn't sign autographs, he just dismissed people with a wave of his hand. I've never like him since.

Ella46 Tue 07-May-13 19:15:32

gracesmum I didn't know anything other than 'they' said a well known comedien a while ago, and I thought it would be JT.

I met Jimmy Tarbuck by chance in a hotel once and he spoke to a girl within hearing distance but there seemed to be nothing wrong.
The girl told him she had been in hospital etc and he wished her well.
The only physical contact he had with her was they shook hands at the end.
I am surprised but it shows you can not judge a person in 10 minutes.

Saying that just being arrested does not mean a person is guilty.
I know a police man who was arrested on suspicion when he was off duty.
He was trying to stop a fight and the officers did not know him as he was from a different force.
Normally he carried his warrant card around with him but he forgot it that day.

Tom Jones was also a bit of a boyo in the sixties .

Think his was more of a Groupie thing though .

Many years ago I had a friend who was a roadie to a well known rock band. He told me that girls did the most amazing things to get near their idols - this included arriving naked at their hotel door. He was sexually approached by very young girls [14+] in order to get access to anyone in the band. Some people are just attracted to fame in any form - people with integrity will try and avoid this - but the younger famous men find it difficult. All this happened in the '60s and '70s when these people were young, the accused were young too and took advantage of the situation. Then we have the true predators like Stuart Hall and Jimmy Saville who took advantage of every occasion.
There used to be joke cartoons about a boss chasing his secretary around the desk - this happened - I worked with a man who I constantly had to fend off, everyone knew about his behaviour and it was almost considered a joke. Thankfully things have improved, you can complain and your complaint will be taken seriously - not greeted with 'oh that's just his way' as happened to me.

I delivered his Christmas mail one year when I was doing the post as a student! It was a blooming long haul up Kingston Hill.

It all boils down to a change in culture. Taking advantage of the young and vulnerable will always happen but now society is putting in checks to try to prevent it. It has always upset and angered me that people think they have a right to exploit others. I know that is naive.

However well educated in stranger danger children are always open to the 'non stranger'. {the April Jones case is a prime example.}

kittylester Wed 08-May-13 10:21:13

In the mid-sixties I once climbed a drainpipe to try to get to Paul Jones although I was fully clothed grin

Men who 'tried it on' were, I think, just another of life's experiences so long as one was the right sort of personality. That doesn't make it right, but it certainly taught one how to 'fight back' and which weapons to use against the morons.

Unfortunately, the young people that suffered at the hands of these predators were vulnerable for one reason or another be it age or some other circumstance.

annodomini Wed 08-May-13 10:40:47

kitty, what a tearaway you were! I couldn't have climbed a drainpipe to save my life - nor even to see one of my idols. grin
