Are we going to be seeing more of Charles and Camilla now the Queen seems to be scaling back her engagements?

I thought Camilla looked suitably regal at the State Opening of Parliament

Personally I don't think so Lilygran. It is one thing to say you do not believe in some "mysterious man in the sky" and quite another to say you do not believe that one family should live in the absolute lap of luxury for their entire life, (paid for by everyone else) just by sheer accident of birth.

Love it Bags grin

Atheist here (in case you hadn't noticed wink). I'm not anti-royalist; I just like taking the piss. They are wonderful targets, especially Charles. It's part of the job.

I do think it would be nice, however, if we could have a nominal head of state position which wasn't hereditary – that bit is anachronistic – but I'm not sure there is a better solution just at the moment. Lizzie is a good egg. Not so sure about Charles. That's the worry.

William and Kate seem pleasant and Harry is a laugh, as is his grandad.

So, overall, good entertainment value really smile

For anyone not yet decided that the man is;

a) A buffoon
b) Not living in the real world (check out points 2,11,12,35,41..........)
c) A Twit (check out point 5) grin

Actually, if any of that list is true, it quite endears me to him. I love eccentric people. I don't much like his predilection for hunting and shooting defenceless animals but otherwise I rather like him. And Camilla seems like a good laugh. I said earlier I had lost all respect for the lot of them but I might just make an exception for those two. Oh and Princess Anne because she works hard and rejected titles for her children. This time last year I had a lot of goodwill towards the Queen but that's gone for good now sad

Ana Thu 16-May-13 17:17:04

Why, nightowl? confused

Bags Thu 16-May-13 17:17:57

Why have you lost goodwill towards the queen, nightowl?

nightowl Thu 16-May-13 17:30:29

Oh dear I wish I hadn't said that now. I don't want to reopen a discussion that's better left. It's because she went to a certain persons's funeral and I saw that as a deliberately provocative and political act. I thought the queen had enough years of experience behind her to understand how her actions would be viewed. That's it. I sincerely do not want to reopen that discussion and I respect anyone's right to have a different opinion about the person in question.

Off to bury my head in the sofa now.

Ana Thu 16-May-13 17:36:04

You don't need to do that, nightowl! grin
I was just curious.

Eloethan Thu 16-May-13 17:42:55

I agree with you re the funeral nightowl but what makes you think any of the other royals would have behaved differently - they are all part of the establishment.

merlotgran Thu 16-May-13 17:56:27

gillybob, I've read the outdated list of fun things about Prince Charles and frankly can't see anything to poke fun at - even the points you've highlighted.

nightowl Thu 16-May-13 18:43:36

I know Eloethan I think I must have had my old romantic head on when I started to feel fond of the Queen! It was all the jubilee celebrations that made me come over like someone from another age, tugging my forelock and thinking 'Gawd bless you ma'am'. Soon came down to earth again. grin

Oh so boiling 4 eggs to get one good one, running an Aston Martin, several Range Rovers, Audis and Jaguars (all at the same time) , boiling his vegetables in mineral water and his obscenely priced suits all make him absolutely in touch with reality and just an average Joe, do they merlotgran ? smile

Not to mention the bloody cushion that his "man" has to carry around for him (for his piles?) He probably rubs the cream in for him too! grin

FlicketyB Fri 17-May-13 07:32:25

Don't believe everything you read in the newspapers.

gillybob Fri 17-May-13 07:46:12

The photographs were very clear in several newspapers ( re the cushion) FlicketyB and the link shows it all very clear. smile

Aka Fri 17-May-13 08:05:16

Quite right Gillybob of course he should carry his own cushion. What's to stop him tucking it under one arm on state visits, etc. aftervall he only needs one hand for working the crowd. Or better still he could put it in a shoulder bag thus freeing up both hands for all that handshaking. It might set a new trend in man bags hmm
Does his 'man' really apply his pile cream for him? Now that is a step too far. I can tell you have inside information and look forward to more scandalous interesting revelations.

Bags Fri 17-May-13 08:12:11

"Working the crowd"

I didn't know it was called that.

Bags Fri 17-May-13 08:12:49

Such hard work too hmm

Ella46 Fri 17-May-13 08:18:13

As I've already said, he can't carry his cushion because he needs both hands to hold his ears back when it's windy!

Faye Fri 17-May-13 08:18:50

In the fifth and seventh photos of the link merlot put up of The State Opening of Parliament Charles' hands look very swollen. Could that be caused by his idle hands. hmm

gillybob Fri 17-May-13 09:49:16

Oh no Aka No "inside information" required for this one, it is quite clear for all to see. (well not the man applying the pile cream obviously that would be a step too far) grin

I fully appreciate that one should always have "ones man" on hand to carry ones cushion at all times.

Ella46 grin

Ella46 Fri 17-May-13 10:09:16

I carry my 'cushion' down the front of my jeans blush

merlotgran Fri 17-May-13 11:28:27

I have a sore back and a favourite cushion. I don't have servants but DH or any other member of the family would be only too happy to carry it for me. They wouldn't dare refuse. grin

The other stuff is just exaggerated nonsense and I don't expect the heir to the throne to turn up in an M&S suit.

I could name quite a few celebs who run fleets of cars and they don't generate anything like the employment that Prince Charles does.

My hens are laying well at the moment and I have a surplus. I might just boil four at tea time and pick out the best one...the dogs can eat the others thereby saving some money on Winalot!

Ana Fri 17-May-13 11:42:05

merlot! grin

gillybob Fri 17-May-13 13:08:56

Aaaah the difference with the "celebs" merlotgran is that they are in the position to buy the goods based on their earnings (hard earned or otherwise) but non the less "earned". The royals are in their position due to accident of birth and nothing more. Moreover I could have a little bit of respect for any of them if they showed even the tiniest bit of humility and acceptance of their over privileged status instead of throwing it all back in the face of the very people who are keeping in the manner to which they are accustomed.

The difference with your family carrying the merlot-cushion is that they carrying it of their own free will (because they love and care for you) not because they are being paid as a servant because you are so far up your own backside to carry it yourself ! grin
