Merlot Charles had the exmple before him of what happened to his great-uncle David when he persisted - and the empty life that he then pursued, alienated from his family and an exile from his homeland. David had chosen a much more notorious woman than Camilla, and would probably have been a pretty lousy king, vulnerable to blackmail on several aspects of his private life, but his fate would have been very much in Charles' mind.

And at that time he does not seem to have had the much confidence in himself. Marrying Camilla might have been the best thing that he could have done, but that is water under the bridge now.

Worlie Are you posting from a phone? Is it possible to turn off the capitals? Posting everything in capitals makes it look like a heading, not an opinion, and also it is generally done when you want to SHOUT something.

I am always perplexed as to why people are happy to be defined as "subjects" rather than "citizens". I find it quite demeaning when people are expected to bow or curtsy to anyone, however esteemed they may be.

When people behave in this way in countries such as North Korea, many conclude that their reactions are influenced by constant propaganda. My feeling is that the same thing applies here.

I think Charles should be king and Camilla should use the title queen because she is his wife and this is the right of a wife. Wales is not his country, he has the title but only because it is a title stolen from the rightful heirs.

I know of no other 'job' where one can be questioned on suitability after 64 years training. I do think he does try to understand problems of 'the people' and there are many who have benefited from the Princes Trust.

His lavish lifestyle I find offensive, how many homes does one couple need, I am also annoyed that we have to pay for the security of all these homes, we even pay for the security on Camillas own home where she lived before marrying Charles. She likes to stay there occasionally, she should pay for the security.

I think there could be a psychological reason behind someone being averse to bowing or curtseying. I wonder what it is? Perhaps not being quite comfortable in one's own skin?

If that's the case, J08, I am psychologically disturbed. I don't acknowledge anyone's social superiority simply by accident of birth. The kind of people I admire wouldn't want me to bow and scrape.

Well, if someone is totally at ease with themself, and a hundred per cent certain of their own self worth, maybe they wouldn't mind deferring to someone like the Queen on the odd occasion.

i am a newby to gransnet and this is my first post. i think Camilla has behaved with great dignity since she married Prince Charles and will be a very supportive consort to Charles when he becomes King

I respect Camilla and I wouldn't call me a royalist. In fact, I respect them all, just the same as I respect any other human beings. Respect isn't the point!

Elegran, other than the fact Camilla would have probably had a few boyfriends before Charles, there is nothing to compare their relationship with that of Edward and Mrs. Simpson. Camilla was not a divorcee and Charles was obviously not as besotted.

The whole issue about women having to be "suitable" if they are to marry a potential king I find sickening and degrading to women as a whole. Were such investigations re sexual history carried out, for instance, on the duke of Edinburgh, before he married a potential queen?

I have no time for the system of monarchy but I did like Diana and felt she had been very dishonestly treated from the outset. After all the weeping and wailing following her death, I was surprised how quickly the royal family's reputation was restored (though perhaps a succession of lavish ceremonial occasions and the continual support of the media has helped).

Well said eloethan! I felt Diana was the wronged one yet she was stripped of hrh and maybe old never have been killed if she had proper protection that night.

I have little interest in royals now.
