Am i too old at 59 to learn to play the clarinet? My sons think the idea is hilarious!!

Sook Sun 12-May-13 13:11:41

Definitely not Grannygreyhips you are your own woman. Go for it and tell those sons of yours "She who laughs last laughs loudest"

PS I am 59 soon grin

soop Sun 12-May-13 13:12:52

Dear Grannygreyhips...at 59 you're young enough to do whatever your heart desires. Go for it! grin

Notso Sun 12-May-13 13:27:59

Go for it Grannygreyhips! It's a lovely idea smile

Adult children can be very set in their ways and think they have their parents sussed. They think they know how you're going to react and what you can or cannot do.

When mine were being very 'Oh, you know what Mum's like' some years ago, I had a tattoo done on my arm. That stopped them in their tracks!

Thanks everybody. I really want to try it so i will! Next step to hire a clarinet and find somebody brave (daft) enough to give me lessons

Go for it, you shouldn't even be asking the question! Surprising the sprogs is one of my greatest joys. Don't let them get complacent is my attitidue. Big surprise in store for them this weekend!

I wish I was 59 again ...! smile I'd learn to play the clarinet grin

We already have a thread 'Am I too old' started in April by Maywalk.
GNHQ is there not a way of filtering out duplication?

I am not a music expert but I know somebody who started playing the guitar and drums etc when he was 58 and he is now 62 and has been invited to play these instruments in pubs and clubs.
I have heard him and while I would not rate him to be as good as the Tremaloes etc I would say he is good.
Like me he is an ex merchant banker.

I used to have a bit of a ageist mindset....when I was an intolerant 30 year old....but NO we are never too old. I'm getting to grips with Ballroom and Latin. I'm a sturdy wench but have found an excellent and super patient teacher. Husband is an old expert (married his partner (dis...A...S...ter) and he too is very encouraging of my efforts.
So far am now not bad in Waltz, Quickstep , Foxtrot. Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive and am no (hells teef) trying tango! Have been at it 6 months and cant say I have always enjoyed the earlier lessons. However, I now feel its all sort of falling into place and I do get quite a kick out of it. So to sum up....go for it Grannygreyhips and if at first it does not quite work, don't give up!

Just do it Grannygh.

One of my retirement plans is to learn to play the keyboard (hope to be downsizing & will definitely not have room for a piano).

I'm not giving headspace to the notion that I may be too old!

Hilda I would really love to be able to dance, my parents were terrific dancers but I sadly didn't inherit the gene.

Sook Sun 12-May-13 16:22:10

Good for you HildaW

Maniac - how is one supposed to know if a similar thread has been posted sometime in the past? And does it really matter?

HildaW Sun 12-May-13 16:49:45

Can't say I'm a natural....and now that I'm older (and have been through stuff, so stress levels have really knocked out my ability to learn calmly AND remember) I do find it difficult. I think I've got a few steps in the memory bank and then just sort of 'loose' them but its all about repetition so I'm often doing the ironing, hoovering etc and find myself quick quick slowing! Dog is quite perplexed!

Movedalot Sun 12-May-13 17:01:58

We took up pilates in retirement and when I was measured last year I was taller than I have ever been so am very keen on doing new things when older.

Sook Sun 12-May-13 17:20:27

Hilda grin

Already checking out tutors in Edinburgh. Will price hiring the clarinet and hopefully will not be too expensive. Maybe my dog will join in the practice as he's quite good at howling (at my singing)..........!! When I get my new puppy in July we can maybe start a trio!!

Nonu Sun 12-May-13 18:06:30

HILDA , Aging is complusory , growing up is not , remember !

some friends of ours do this ballroom stuff , want us to join , not sure , as the next thing they will be dragging us on a cruise , which I am totally against .

What"s a girl to do ? I say .

You sound as it just the ticket for you . smile

ginny Sun 12-May-13 18:14:10

grannygreyhips, Never too old. My friend started piano lessons at 60 and is doing very well. I also know a lady who started at 70. I have been thinking of taking guitar lessons myself.

tootler Mon 13-May-13 17:30:33

I'd played piano many years ago but wanted to try something different. I took up recorder playing when I was 64. Forget the descant screeching from school days, recorders come in all sizes, the larger they are the lower the notes. Now I run a group for older people and many are in their mid to late 70's. They had never played before but are doing really well and we've even played at a local older persons residential home.
Now I'm going to try saxophone. It needs more puff but I just love the sound.
So no, you are never too old. Enjoy yourself!

HildaW Mon 13-May-13 17:34:16

Nonu, There are cruises and cruises. Some folks are happy with being in with 3,000 odd folks. We stick to those up to 700!

Nonu Mon 13-May-13 17:39:04

I get your drift Hilda , but it not for me at the moment .

I would rather do as I am going to do for the next 5 weeks drive round several states in the USA .

Different strokes , each to his own and all that .smile

Grannyeggs Mon 13-May-13 17:47:55

Nonu I envy you, sounds fun. When do you go?

Nonu Mon 13-May-13 17:52:03

Tommorrow leaving 9.30 for a 4pm flight to Denver .

Hair done, nails varnished , picked up hire car , as we drive to H/Row , cases packed finally so we are good .

Will keep in touch hopefully!

Hope all have a good time . X
