Clothes profits down again, so isn't it time they attracted the grey pound?

Butty Fri 24-May-13 18:37:48

Check out Lands End - there's a 25% sale on at the moment. Not cheap but find they last.

annodomini Fri 24-May-13 19:08:48

Possibly the worst garments I saw today in M&S were long cotton shirts - not bad fabric and a style I rather liked, but they were in a blinding pink and a neon lime green. I got a headache just looking at them!

Charleygirl Sat 25-May-13 11:52:38

That is a problem there annodomini-one often needs to be wearing sunglasses to view the clothes.

annodomini Sun 26-May-13 23:12:29

Either that, Charleygirl, or they are really drab and grungy.

FlicketyB Tue 28-May-13 17:25:51

Well, all their current adverts show nothing but clothes in black and white, neither of which colours I wear because, for me, they are very unflattering.

An M&S advert of Twiggy wearing an LBD popped up while I was looking at something else. It's a style I like, and would wear for special evenings out, so I clicked on it

This is what the blurb says : "Featuring a slash neck, this dress strikes the perfect balance with its laid-back design and a distinctive print. Perfect for an off-duty daytime look"

Laid-back design? It looks quite formal to me.
Distinctive print? Am I missing something?
Perfect for an off-duty day-time look? not sure what my neighbour would think if I popped round for a cuppa in this dress!!

M&S sadly I think you're in terminal decline.

MiceElf Sun 09-Jun-13 14:20:17

Just taken a look. It gives 'laid back' a whole new meaning.

Galen Sun 09-Jun-13 14:51:18

confused

Ana Sun 09-Jun-13 14:53:04

Jane, you're right about the off-duty daytime look! grin

One of the reviewers also makes the comment that the dress is plain black - no print at all...

JessM Sun 09-Jun-13 18:49:21

MM - depends what kind of "duty" you normally do in the day I guess hmm. Perfect off duty wear for... a hard working farmer, or police officer maybe? grin
If it were an on-duty daytime dress I could only think of one profession in which it would nail the required look. And I don't mean modelling.

Ana Sun 09-Jun-13 18:51:51

Quite, Jess! grin

gracesmum Sun 09-Jun-13 18:55:09

laid-back indeed (and thinking of England?)

annodomini Sun 09-Jun-13 19:10:43

That is most definitely a cocktail dress. Since it has no print, I suspect they have got their blurb mixed up!

Deedaa Sun 09-Jun-13 20:57:34

grin grin grin

Oldgreymare Mon 10-Jun-13 10:00:59

Nice dress, shame about the blurb grin

FlicketyB Mon 10-Jun-13 15:49:12

Just before I go down the garden to move some gravel I will just slip into my off-duty daytime dress.

Nonu Mon 08-Jul-13 10:32:37

I notice that M/S has posted it"s best clothing performance for two years .

Good on them , I like their stuff .

smile

FlicketyB Tue 09-Jul-13 10:23:52

Well, this morning R4 reported that M&S clothing sales were down for the 8th successive quarter. Food sales and profits were up.

Obviously there are a lot of people still liking and buying their clothes but their numbers are decreasing. For the last 50 years whenever I have gone into M&S my immediate impression has always been that the clothes are designed for women 20 years older me. I am now 70 and that is still my immediate reaction when I see their clothes.

Nonu Tue 09-Jul-13 10:25:51

Who to believe ? I ask myself ?

hmmmm

Nonu Tue 09-Jul-13 10:26:50

You certainly do no look it , FLICK .

smile

FlicketyB Tue 09-Jul-13 10:40:18

Nonu, Do I know you? I have filed no profile and no photo.

Nonu Tue 09-Jul-13 10:49:05

Obviously fallen flat ,A little humour on my part !!!!!

FlicketyB Tue 09-Jul-13 11:15:45

Sorry, my fault for just sending off fast answer and not engaging mind.

Nonu Tue 09-Jul-13 11:48:32

No Prob.

Can GNHQ not organise a 'design a great outfit (or range of) for granny'? And then present M&S with a whole new collection.
I went into their Leamington branch yesterday and could not find a single thing I wanted to buy. Mind you it was the sane at Next, House of Frazer, East, etc. which would seem to say there is little choice for those of us who want a smart casual look or I'm too fussy.
