I'm in a silly mood tonight, and a song that I think was written the year I was born has come into my mind...............

You were a screamer? Used to drive me nuts - I wondered what I was bothering to play for!

kittylester Sat 31-Aug-13 18:00:23

feetlebaum, that might have been me blush

Nelliemoser Sat 31-Aug-13 17:04:12

Thank you Galen! Yes I do remember them and I do not wish to be reminded of that fact. wink
I realise now I should have said, "who on earth is that Galen talking about." grin

When I was 13, my best friend's Mum took the two of us to see Frankie Vaughan at Wembley on Ice, as her birthday treat. The usherette realised it was her birthday and told us to wait at the back before we sat down. We waited in the darkness and suddenly there was Frankie Vaughan who smiled , signed her autograph book and kissed her cheek. Result two starstruck teenagers and two fans for life.

kittylester Fri 30-Aug-13 20:40:12

You are right Katy smile. I looked!!

Elegran Fri 30-Aug-13 20:03:27

Wimeweh!

KatyK Fri 30-Aug-13 19:27:00

Kitty - at the risk of coming across as a know-it-all, wasn't Sorrow The Merseybeats? It sticks in my mind because my OH used to sing it to me 'with your long blonde hair and your eyes of blue, the only thing I ever get from you is sorrow'. I'm sure he was joking !

ninathenana Fri 30-Aug-13 17:55:35

Scrolling down from that clip, which I love. I saw "Will you love me tomorrow"
I remember falling in love with the lead singer of a group my cousin played in when I saw them perform that song. I was 12-13 at the time.

Galen Fri 30-Aug-13 17:55:32

Now it's post menopausal ones hmm

feetlebaum Fri 30-Aug-13 17:51:58

Those bills in 'the old days' were OK - but nobody could hear anything for the squealing of pre-pubescent females!

kittylester Fri 30-Aug-13 17:38:43

I think Trains and Boats and Plains was done by Dionne Warwick as well as Billy J Kramer. I saw him in concert at Derby Baths - don't know how that worked confused

Concerts in the old days were brilliant with loads of people on one bill and no pyrotechnics or other fancy stuff - just good music.

My first LP was West Side Story. First single was 'Sorrow' - maybe by the Swinging Blue Jeans (or maybe someone else). I saw them in concert too - but at the Gaumont! grin

On a Saturday evening, in the 1950s we watched The Six Five Special and I was rather taken with Frankie Vaughan - Green Door and When You Walk in the Garden. And who could forget Rock Around the Clock?
But the first LP I bought for myself was Beethoven's Archduke Trio.

Galen Fri 30-Aug-13 17:13:41

Anybody remember 'rock around the clock' and green door' and when you walk in the garden, the garden of Eden, with a beautiful woman and she touches your hands,.
Diana!
Unchained melody

KatyK Fri 30-Aug-13 16:29:04

Jud - Trains and Boats and Planes was Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, although
someone may have done it before them. My first LP ws A Hard Days night too. Start of a life long love affair with the Beatles (well in my head anyway).

MiceElf Fri 30-Aug-13 16:16:12

The first single I bought was What do want if you don't want money? By Adam Faith. I thought his London accent was exotic!

First LP? Well, I was older by the time I could afford one of those and it was a compilation of songs by Purcell including Nymphs and Shepherds. I still think the melody is wonderful.

Judthepud2 Fri 30-Aug-13 16:05:07

'Trains and Boats and Planes' was my first single. Anyone remember that? Who sang it? I can't remember! Beatles' "Hard Day's Night" was my first LP. That places me firmly as a child of the Sixties doesn't it? The record that I played until it was worn out at that time was "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones. I was a bit of a 'Depressed' teenager grin

KatyK Fri 30-Aug-13 15:54:33

I love that Phoenix. I was a teenager in the 60s and the 60s stuff is my favourite. I had an older sister who used to play all that lovely 50s music.
She loved Elvis and also used to play Pat Boone, Johnny Tillotson, Eddie
Cochran and such like, so I got to know all the songs. She owned the record player so the music was always of her choosing!

feetlebaum Fri 30-Aug-13 15:51:32

@annsixty - Good choice!

First record I bought was a 78 (that's all there were then!) of Bunk Johnson's
Weary Blues. The second was Tito Gobbi (a 12" record!) singing the Largo al Factotum. I think it was Nessun dorma on the other side...

numberplease Fri 30-Aug-13 15:36:13

My first ever single was the Woolworths cover version of Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, by Paul Rich. My first ever LP was Elvis`s Blue Hawaii.

annsixty Fri 30-Aug-13 11:25:30

The first LP I ever bought was Frank Sinatra Songs for Swinging Lovers, quite a long time ago. 50s I think.

Galen Fri 30-Aug-13 11:14:23

My first lp was Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.

I remember Bill Haley.

feetlebaum Fri 30-Aug-13 11:01:01

Blimey - you are all much younger than I thought! Shame really - you missed a lot of good stuff - well... some good stuff. All those early Doris Day recordings with Les Brown (best she ever was, in my view), Les Paul and Mary Ford - no, you're all irredeemably post-Bill Haley - what a shame!

Al Bowlly, anyone?

dustyangel Fri 30-Aug-13 10:19:16

Oh, I loved that Phoenix. I've been warbling away ever since I heard it. Fortunately DH has gone out.

whenim64 Fri 30-Aug-13 09:27:08

I listened to that LP with my friends, Ariadne. We played it over and over until we wore the record out from constant handling and trying to drop the old-fashioned needle on to our favourite tracks.

Ariadne Fri 30-Aug-13 09:18:52

My first LP was Buddy Holly - Peggy Sue, Every day etc. I was 13, and only had two other singles.
