Can I take it off now? No.

Just had a look at some back numbers. Yes, funny and it is Jesus and Mohammed of course. Still a bit predicable and is it just atheists having a pop at religion?

Or maybe a bit of interfaith dialogue. Like the drawings.

I did get the irony of the cartoon. I haven't seen these cartoons before but rather like the idea of Jesus and Mohammad as a double act, and yes I do think God has a sense of humour (otherwise why would S/He have put male genitals on the outside of the body) grin

G23, smile

jings, why do I care so much that people are oppressed by silly rules? Because I believe in fairness. Burkas are unfair. Simple. Any method of getting that across to people, of making people actually think about the issues, that doesn't encourage violence against or hatred of people is fine by me. Things, like this cartoon, that question silly ideas and silly practices are good for the health of humanity.

As for people not liking it, or J & M generally.... well, shrug, they don't have to. Why should I care?

NfkDumpling Sat 14-Sept-13 14:28:59

I like J & M! And I don't think it's anti religion - just anti what's been done in the name of religion. A bit like my DD when she went into St Mark's Basilica saying in a too loud voice "My God - do do you think this is really what Jesus had in mind?"

The cartoon made me smile but that doesn't mean I think women should be prevented from wearing the burkha if they wish to. Although I generally believe it to be indicative of the oppression of women, I also recognise that in western society too women are subjected to all sorts of pressures to look and behave in certain ways.

Can't remember the name of the Muslim comedienne. who said that in her house there were five veiled women and one bus pass...

I really struggle with a woman's right to wear a burka. Although I would like to say I support a woman's right to wear whatever she chooses, I can't reconcile this with a woman choosing to wear what is a symbol of oppression. While ever women are forced to wear such hideous garments and suffer severe punishments for transgressing this rule, how can any woman living in a free society actually embrace such a garment? It seems to me like a slap in the face to their sisters in other parts of the world.

trendygran Sat 14-Sept-13 20:30:46

I totally agree with Stansgran . The most ridiculous thing I saw a few months ago was a woman trying to drink coffee under her niqab! They should be banned in this country . Shame on the college who have been forced to change their rules regarding the wearing of. niqabs .

Well, I loved it! Anything that takes the mick of the dafter aspects of religion or culture has to be worthwhile.

Please don't get offended at this, j08, but you remind me of Margo in The Good Life. There was an episode where they were all laughing at something and Margo started crying because she didn't get the joke, and she realised she didn't have a sense of humour.

j08 Tue 17-Sept-13 09:16:25

I do have a sense of junior. It's on a different level with yours.

These "jokes" are just another atheist's way of having a pop at religion.

I will not get offended. I don't expect everyone to 'get' the reason behind some of my posts. I think Bags probably did this time.

petallus Tue 17-Sept-13 09:19:58

Yes, they are a way of having a pop at religion.

I noticed Dawkins loves them.

petallus Tue 17-Sept-13 09:20:37

Obvious stuff as well.

j08 Tue 17-Sept-13 09:26:39

Petra, this is Rabbi Lionel Blue joke. I like it.

A gay couple walk arm-in-arm behind a young man and his girl, Suddenly the boy and girl have a flaming row and one of the gay couple remarks sadly to his partner, "That is what comes of mixed marriage".

j08 Tue 17-Sept-13 09:28:44

Another one of his.

How many Jews does it take to change a light-bulb?
Two, one to change the bulb and another to tell him how to do it better.

How many psychoanalysts does it take to change a light-bulb?
One, provided the light-bulb really wants to change.

How many Jewish mothers does it take to change a light-bulb?
None, don't worry about me, I'll sit alone in the dark.

petallus Tue 17-Sept-13 09:30:26

I like the last one.

j08 Tue 17-Sept-13 09:39:26

I like a good cartoon. from Twitter

Iam64 Tue 17-Sept-13 12:55:57

I really used to enjoy Rabbi Lionel Blue on thought for the day. Last i heard he was ill - lovely, gentle humour

j08 Tue 17-Sept-13 12:57:12

Yes. I like him too. smile

gracesmum Tue 17-Sept-13 14:04:03

It's taken me a while to actually have a look at this thread. Initially I thought "Jesus in a burka!" was some sort of (possibly antipodean) expletive. Try it! blush

janthea Tue 17-Sept-13 14:41:54

Loved it! gringrin

Oh, I do like them! smile

j08 Wed 18-Sept-13 12:01:51

Yes. That one is very good. Would n' t actually make me laugh. But good in the context of a campaign against burkas.
