Impossible dreams

Well not impossible really, just fantasies. I used to say "When I have arrived in this world" (meaning more money than sense - if you know what I mean) - "I wll have travelled on the Orient Express from London to Venice and dined in the best hotels there" - "I will have a pent-house flat overlooking the sea in Brighton" and "I will own a white Range-Rover with a black top". All of these silly hopeless dreams for me, and now I would not want any of them, but I wonder whether I would have enjoyed any of them had they been available?

When I was 60 months off my 60th birthday, I started a bucket list - 60 things to do before I'm 60. I set off with great enthusiasm, but have had to do a search for the spreadsheet today, it's been so long since I looked at it. Blowing the cobwebs off - figuratively speaking, for pedants like me - I find I've done just 27 of them. With only 15 months to go! So thanks for your post, printmiss - it's got me thinking again about all those things I want to do. None of mine are really hopeless, though some are pretty ambitious - walking the Sydney Bridge and yes, travelling on the Orient Express do feature.

A round the world cruise is my No.1

trip on the Orient Express features too along with a few nights at the art deco hotel on Burgh Island.

I've been on a cruise half way round the world by 60 but the rest I'm still waiting for.

Are you an Agatha Christie fan ninathenana? smile I would love to do the round the world cruise, but fear being sea-sick so won't do it [oh, yes, there is the money thing as well!]I would like to visit USA too but hate long air flights [what a wuss I am.]What I really would love is to be able to afford a cottage to use as a bolt hole for lots of little holidays, maybe in the Lake District or Devon. It won't be happening unless I win the lottery, but I would have to buy a ticket first, which I never do, hee-hee.

I'd like to travel round the UK seeing some of the places I haven't seen for a while - like Holkham in Norfolk, and visiting those places that I've always wanted to see - like Portmeirion.

I would love to give the DD's money so that they were totally self sufficient; mortgages paid and no calling on the Government. I think it would take away my worries and leave me so that I could move back to Cornwall sunshine

ninathenana Sat 19-Oct-13 22:48:02

rosesarered yes I do like Agatha Christie, but it's more the fact I love art deco design.

LizG; I used to live in Boscastle and would give anything to own a cottage there...

Years ago...we once got shipwrecked on Burgh island nina! That mecano/boat thing got a puncture. We had gone over in the afternoon for cream teas and when we went to go back to plymouth they said oh you'll have to stay tonight. Unfortunately we could not stay!... They ended up blowing up a dingy attaching a dodgy old engine and ferrying us back two by two. Its a beautiful place, well worth that visit.grin

LizG Sun 20-Oct-13 00:56:05

A lovely part Tegan. we lived in Newquay and I don't think I would go back there as the summers were horrendous. Somewhere around Newquay though, maybe Crantock. Now I have set myself dreaming smile.

Apart for good health and happiness for my family, my impossible dream is a beachside house between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness. Now, anyone got a spare £2m?

NfkDumpling Sun 20-Oct-13 08:01:15

Ever since I saw Lawrence of Arabia I've wanted to ride a camel. Properly. In a desert. The trouble is the camely, desert places are becoming dodgier by the day. It's still on the bucket list but if I don't do it soon the getting on/off will have become impossible.

Flowerofthewest Sun 20-Oct-13 11:03:42

Agree there kittylester, lover that area. My friend and I stay in one of the beach hugs at Walberswick every year.

NfkDumpling Sun 20-Oct-13 11:07:37

Beach hugs? Is that why they're so expensive!

Flowerofthewest Sun 20-Oct-13 12:39:28

Ah you noticed my deliberate typo blush Luckily this one isn't it belongs to a friend and we give a donation to the school she helps run for severely bullied children. I'm not sure how expensive the beach 'hugs' are at Walberswick most of the are handed down through generations. They are not the pretty pretty ones as at Southwold but black painted and fairly large, families stay in them throughout the summer holidays and whenever they want to. They have beds, stoves and some even have wood burners. No electricity or loos but we use the public loos in Walberswick, walking through the reeds, over the crabbing bridge and to the toilets. (thought I would share the vision with you) at night we have a lidded bucked!!!!

kittylester Sun 20-Oct-13 12:42:23

The houses I'm talking about have their own loos, Flower thlgrin

Flowerofthewest Sun 20-Oct-13 12:52:08

REALLY!!! Kitty, whereabouts are they? interested. Couldn't afford one and happy with our bucket and chuckit arrangement.

annodomini Sun 20-Oct-13 13:24:09

Nfk, I understand that there are more camels in Australia than anywhere else, even the Arabian Peninsula. I don't know if they do camel safaris there, but why not?

Granny23 Sun 20-Oct-13 13:49:11

You can ride camels in Lanzarote, which is hardly a dangerous place, barring the odd earthquake. grin

NfkDumpling Sun 20-Oct-13 13:52:00

Oh, thanks, Anno. Australia is on my wish list as I have cousins in Sydney. We have been but stuck to the eastern side - I'll start sowing ideas for visiting drier bits where camels hang out!

NfkDumpling Sun 20-Oct-13 13:53:31

Lanzarote may be more practical I suppose. Not been there. Is that where there's that enormous sand dune?

Granny23 Sun 20-Oct-13 14:23:58

Enormous sand dunes are at Maspalomas on Gran Canaria. Been there and DH and I slogged up one side and rolled down the other, humming the Laurence Of Arabia theme. No camels there though - perhaps a business opportunity for someone?

You can say that again?????
