Thanks, Mamie. Will check out their Facebook page.
Good Morning Spring Bank Holiday Monday 25th May 2026
Carol Sheridan, who we all know well as Greatnan, has gone missing in the French Alps, probably whilst out on one of her frequent mountain walks.
Carol lives in Habere Poche, in the Haute Savoie departemente about 20 miles from Lake Geneva. She is mad keen on hiking alone in the mountains, and will often take off in her car to find a remote mountain pass where she can walk and enjoy the amazing scenery.
On Saturday last, she was seen driving out of her car park by a neighbour, and she has not been sighted since. Police have made enquiries and advised she can be listed as a missing person this morning. Interpol, Wellington, New Zealand police and the French gendarmerie will cooperate in attempts to find Carol. (Her daughter lives in New Zealand)
Her daughter, Fiona Conyers, is coordinating a poster campaign, and local radio stations, the Mairie, people in the village, Commonwealth Office, British Embassy and several others have been notified. GNHQ have a copy of the poster and will try to assist.
Carol's mobile phone was active whilst she was missing, but is now showing 'call failed.' However, signals from it when it was active may help the search.
She drives a black Fiat Panda 4x4 reg: AZ 522 AP. she could be parked on a mountain pass, waiting for help to arrive if she has broken down. The walks she goes on are in very remote areas, but she does occasionally see other walkers and cyclists.
A group of Gransnetters has been busy over the last 36 hours, sharing information and supporting the family. A couple of fluent French speakers have emailed local radio stations, offered to speak to police and to give help with translations of information.
We are aware there are quite a few Gransnetters living in France and the Swiss borders. If you know of any walkers who will be in the French Alps today, please share this with them.
Finally, would you please avoid sending private pm message with your good wishes, as answering them will distract the involved Gransnet members from liaising and offering support to Carol's worried family. I know you lovely Gransnetters will understand, and we'll keep updating as we know more throughout the day.
Many thanks.
Thanks, Mamie. Will check out their Facebook page.
Just a thought - is it worth someone contacting The Connexion magazine? It is for English speakers in France.
www.connexionfrance.com
I can't link properly to the Facebook page, but if somebody can?
That's useful to know, Mamie
It may also be helpful to know that today is a Bank Holiday in France, Le Toussaint.
Not much to report in the French media this morning so far. It still only seems to be on the Alpes TV site and its offshoots as per yesterday. I had hoped that the Dauphiné Libéré would pick it up as most people in France seem to read the regional paper. Let's hope the gendarmes get the publicity moving now.
Bon courage to everyone for today.
Collective Gransnet crossing of fingers for good news in the morning. Night all x
to you both
All great ideas by the way! not silly at all! xx
Those issues have been asked early on, Liz. As part of the search schedule for a missing person, they will be investigating banking and travel information, which the family have raised with police, too.
As far as i am aware the police have checked her phone, which has shown to have last been used on Saturday the 26th. They are trying to obtain a warrant so they can search her property and access her computer which will perhaps tell us/them a lot more with regards to e-mails/bank accounts etc....
Couple of silly ideas: 1. Have the police contacted her bank to see if she has left a paper trail - she is known to enjoy driving but going a long distance would mean fuel; 2. Same goes for flying have airports been checked.
Hi all!
I have posted a new thread asking you all of carol's last contact on here? please will you comment if you know.
THank you
Heather
The reference to Heathrow was for when she sets off for NZ next month.
Lara here's her last Facebook post about the replacement for her laptop:
'Latest idea - buy a tablet at Dixons at Heathrow! They have the Nexus 7 , a bit more expensive than other retailers, but I could handle it before buying. They also have Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. Finally, I have seen a back pack on wheels, which would mean I could take my current laptop without getting back or shoulder ache! I will certainly let you all know when I get fixed up.'

Hi Lara/Greatganddaughter. Carol didn't want a keyboard for her laptop, she was thinking of buying a tablet with keyboard because her laptop was coming to the end of its life and whist a tablet would be ideal for her and what she would want it for, the keyboards don't suit her as an experienced typist, hence tablet with an additional plug in keyboard. If she was drivng off so have a look at those, it woud be a nearby town, as local villages don't have them or aren't open on Sunday. Can't think which one, though. If she nipped up the motorway, she will be seen on camera.
Yes, definitely cyclists - we would pass quite a few on our travels, going up and down very steep mountain passes. Plenty of walkers, too, when I was visiting.
I'm not sure about her favourite scenic views - she has so many. If it was raining and she wasn't planning a walk, she would seize an opportunity if it cleared up whilst she was out. Sorry, can't think if anything else at the moment.
Woke up to so many emails from media and organisations around the area that you have contacted! Definitely getting some attention now, which is exactly what we need to keep the momentum going in the search!
We've had a few more ideas that I thought I would run past you all:
Cyclists? We know that the French are very keen on cycling and have been trying to get the message through to as many cyclists in the area through forums and associations to try and get them out search too.
Mum has also written to people that she has recently contacted asking them if she has made any suggestion where she would be going.
Her sister, Kath, has now remembered that on the day that she went missing she spoke to her and suggested that she would be going out for a drive, but would not be walking as it was very wet. Any of you who have been to stay with her have any idea where she might have driven? Thinking both in terms of scenic spots that she likes but also the fact that she was talking about desperately wanting to get a new keyboard for her laptop??
Have just realised it's night time for many of you GNers now, please go and get some rest, think about other things for a while and recharge your batteries
That's encouraging, Elegran. The more people have that car number plate the better.
Moving on, I hope!
The link appeared on page 3 of a Google search I did for "Habere Poche Carol"
That's a new one on me Elegran.
On the forum snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=103648 someone is asking "Has this been asked about on Vallee-expats. The valley D'aulps info e-mail group ? "
See Mamie's earlier post at 16.45 54 for the French media link. The day of Carol going missing is incorrect on their report.
Carol's grandson in law has now consulted the family & they want to take up the offer of contact from a Newsagency (see above post) so I hope something comes of it along with all the emails to BBC etc.
I was also thinking it would be good if more people also Like the CarolSheridanMissing page so it reflects the numbers searching for her.
French media have latched on to this now.
