I started to make some flapjack this morning. Butter melting, sugar weighed, nuts and seeds ground, tin lined with baking parchment, oven heating up...

...no oats

all is on hold.

I've just watched Melancholia, a Lars von Trier film. Very moody and surreal. Just up my street.

Oldgreymare, you certainly are not the only wrinkly to fancy him - I think he is lovely

Flippin'fireworks have started already, and at this time of night. My cat has retreated to the baby's bouncy chair and the other is snuggled up with my DDH

Just spent a happy hour looking at research based evidence about how soon and how actively to start physiotherapy and when to reduce the time I should wear my sling following my shoulder tendon repair.

My initial browsing gave some very conflicting results and varying time scales to start physio and reduce wearing the sling.

The most up to date study paper's conclusions suggested there was no statisically significance difference in long term outcomes, for either early or slightly delayed rehab (2 weeks or so) groups.
However patients might be more compliant if its delayed long enough to let the initial pain and inflammation reduce. Well that suits my way of thinking, they are too bloody painful today.

Off to stuff myself with the night time's pain killers. I think I might have finally cracked how to get a relatively full nights sleep. My day time intake avoids the really hard stuff.
Try to get some sleep fellow worriers.

Marelli are you a Dougie fan. I love him - he used to come south to our local folk club - the last time was about 10 years ago I think.

I shall seek out the tea towels and use my vote.
I don't have a silk pillow case petallus but have read the likes of Madonna and others use them daily as they iron out wrinkles. £35 sounds reasonable, compared to a full lift or Botox. grin

I agree with you Gally, being new here I have been moved by everyone's love and concern for Greatnan. Turning my pooter on the first port of call is gransnet at the moment.
Reading of all the work so many of you are doing in the search for Greatnan I hope everyone is managing to get some sleep.moon
Off to bed with the book club And the Mountains Echoed.

Boast Alert!!!
My youngest son, who was homeschooled two days a week is now at Uni studying for an Engineering degree. He just got 91% for his first exam. He's had a really tough time since starting at Uni as he separated from his long term girlfriend on the first day of term. I'm so pleased he's got off to such a good start with his course. smile

merlotgran Fri 01-Nov-13 23:40:37

Good news, ga. My eldest DGS is doing the rounds of Uni open days at the moment so I have all this to go through. Oh, how we want to be happy and successful

whenim64 Fri 01-Nov-13 23:43:29

Lovely news ga smile

My little, just 2, granddaughters have been looking at their first words book with daddy. 'How's a toddler supposed to know how to say 'steamroller' he complains to mummy. 'Thteamroller' pipes up little one, shortly after followed by 'thylophone!' Silly daddy! grin

merlotgran Fri 01-Nov-13 23:49:53

I should have put How we want them to be happy and successful. Getting late. hmm

I had the idea of wrapping my pillow in an old silk dressing gown. Very nice to sleep on and hair is not sticking up but I need a longer trial before splashing out on the real thing at John Lewis.

Any one got any ideas how to get thorns out of fingers ? I usually resort to the needle and squeeze method but it isn't working this time ! I have 4 refusing to budge, probably very tiny but annoying ..........

Seems such a stupid thing to be annoyed about at the moment with so many other much greater worrries going on.

glassortwo Sat 02-Nov-13 08:13:42

tiggy maybe some germolene and a plaster and try to draw it out.
Well done grannya DS sunshine

Marelli Sat 02-Nov-13 08:18:18

A dab of Magnesium Sulphate and cover with a plaster for as long as it takes to draw the wee b...er out, tiggy? Might just do the trick!

Flower - I love Dougie McLean, and have met him a couple of times in the hotel he used to own in Dunkeld, Perthshire. I think he does still live at the Old School House in Butterstone, nearby, where he has his studio. He's a really lovely chap and very down to earth!

Marelli Sat 02-Nov-13 08:19:28

Lovely bit of news, grannyactivist!

Grannyknot Sat 02-Nov-13 08:20:21

bags I set out to make muffins earlier this week, to use up the clementines that husband declared "tasteless and should be thrown out". Here's how it went: Peel and chuck whole clementine segments into a bowl, hunt for plain flour, oops only self raising and not enough at that. Hunt around some more, add polenta to make up amount needed, oops not enough. Add packet of instant oats. Luckily I had the egg and there was some slightly out of date plain yoghurt in the fridge. End result: Scrummy muffins with all the family telling me I should be on Bake Off. I called them "Experiment Muffins".

Lovely good news thread.

LizG Sat 02-Nov-13 08:24:23

Missed this ga many congratulations, you must be so proud flowers. How lovely whenim grin

Grannyknot Sat 02-Nov-13 08:25:14

tiggy I googled for poultices: www.earthclinic.com/CURES/splinters.html

ga that's wonderful news. I have my son and his new wife asleep in the spare room, here for a visit. Such a lovely feeling.

Oldgreymare Sat 02-Nov-13 08:25:49

ga lovely news about your DS.
tiggy if you can put up with the niggle, splinters often work their own way out after a while, at least the little ones do!
Sunshine on the golden leaves of the silver birch.....

Gally Sat 02-Nov-13 08:33:29

Good morning - I see I am the last one up. Result of corkscrew usage and sleeping pill combined to give me 9 HOURS sleep - first time for months. Must get dressed and drive to the surgery for my flu jab. I have finally reached the age when it's free wink then I have no plans. Looks like another long weekend, but not as long as it will be for Carol's family. Let's hope today is the day.........

Elegran Sat 02-Nov-13 08:33:58

Tiggy, it might help to soak hand in warm water so that the skin is soft and soggy, then press the end of a narrow tube over each splinter - drinking straw? old-fashioned key? eye of large needle? Sometimes they pop out. The germoline/plaster is a good idea too (oily germolene, not the water-based one)

tiggypiro Sat 02-Nov-13 09:05:06

Many thanks for all the 'splinter' suggestions. I shall try the soaking and then the Magnesium Sulphate treatment first as I have some MS. Just have to decide which of the little beasties to attack first ! I will be back in the garden later so no doubt will get more even though I wear gloves - bloody brambles !!!

thatbags Sat 02-Nov-13 09:06:37

when love it about your GDDs! When I was looking at a similar book with Minibags, we got to v volcano and she said "big splash".

thatbags Sat 02-Nov-13 09:08:04

gknot, I think you need to take a plate of those scrumdiddlyicious muffins to Soop's Kitchen! smile [yum]

Anne58 Sat 02-Nov-13 09:22:14

Thank you to those who have voted. I must say HQ haven't exactly put it in the main domain, unlike the pumpkin one which is "pinned" !
