Everyone at Gransnet is absolutely devastated by the news about Carol. She was a unique and inspiring member of our community and her wisdom, wit and tales of adventure will be missed more than we can say. Our hearts go out to her family - who she loved with such pride and passion.

As you know, they have asked that people don't contact them directly but instead leave tributes on the facebook page.

For those who are not on facebook (or who would prefer to add their feelings here), please do so here - we will post a link to this page on facebook so that your tributes will be seen by her family.

What I wanted to say might just be on the right thread now.

I read this sad news when I got back in a about 4pm and I had posted a version of this somewhere on FB or GN I am losing the plot now.

"So sorry to hear this, but in the end it is probably no longer any real surprise to us.

I too will say thank goodness for Carol's sake she was out doing what she loved. Carol would not have been a person who would have given in gracefully to having to be "careful now she is getting older".

We will miss her sense of humour and wisdom very much.

Don't anyone take this the wrong way, I can only put it clumsily. But let's take some comfort after reading a post by daughter Fiona which suggested that it appeared most likely that Carol "was killed instantly from a fall whilst walking."

The alternatives do not bear thinking about.

I am so glad she was found before the snows came. This, for the sake of her family had been a concern of mine."

RIP Carol Greatnan indeed.

I have just got in and logged on to read the sad news about Carol (Greatnan)

I feel shocked and very sad for Carol and her family and friends, and the special friends she had on Gransnet who worked so tirelessly in an effort to find her.

Carol was a remarkable woman who had such an interesting life. She will be very much missed.

Another one who logged on as soon as I arrived home to see what, if any news about Carol. I met Carol on line, a first for me to develop a cyber friendship via gransnet, and something I will always treasure. I loved her posts, I found her to be wise, thoughtful and generous of heart and spirit. Feisty, determined, interested in everything that life has to offer, and always interested in others. it's clear from the posts here, that Carol's love of, and pride in her family was at her heart. She was an independent woman, inspirational to so many of us. Like Carol, I love long, solitary walks in wild and beautiful countryside. I often imagined her, striding along her mountain paths, enjoying her freedom, the beauty around her, and with her thoughts and her heart with her much loved children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. RIP Carol and thank you for sharing your life with us

Carol was brave, adventurous and funny. I would like that said of me when the time came.

"Life is either a daring adventure - or nothing"

Truly a free spirit, now flying free. flowers

I am really sad and sorry Carol is no longer with us. I have a few PMs from her which I intend to keep. I always thought of her as a real stand out member on Gransnet, she was as someone else mentioned very wise and had clearly lived a varied and interesting life. A real maverick in her physical activities, can't imagine there would be too many ladies of 73 clambering about in the mountains and snorkeling around coral reefs, she was certainly no one dimensional granny. I think it's a great testament to her that she was so loved and involved with her many grandchildren who clearly thought the world of her and I am sure she will continue to be an inspiration to them and her character and spirit will live on in them.

I am sorry I never met her she was a lady who wasn't afraid to stand for up for what she believed, I didn't always agree with her stance on every thing but then agreeing with anyone all of the time would be a rare thing indeed.

I know Carol didn't believe in an afterlife, but if there is such a place I'm sure she will be somewhere good. RIP

Terrible news. A personality as strong as hers will be sorely missed. It's especially sad as she was still planning a lively future - but I suppose she always would have been. My heartfelt sympathies to all her family.

Bananna said 'I know Carol didn't believe in an afterlife, but if there is such a place I'm sure she will be somewhere good'

This page alone is testament to how Carol, a truly Greatnan will live on in hearts and minds. I know I will often find myself having a 'What would Greatnan have said about that' moment.

Like Nellie, after a week of imagining the worst, I am relieved that she died instantly in a fall.

Can't add anything that hasn't been said already. I will miss her posts and her sharp intellect, wit and kindness. She was a special lady indeed and will be very much missed by all her friends, both cyber and physical.

Her family must be devastated, but I hope they will find comfort knowing how much they were loved by her and how much she meant to so many people.

gratefulgran54 Wed 06-Nov-13 17:45:03

So sad for all of you here, and her family. I'm fairly new so hadn't 'met' her, but it is obvious from reading the forums that she was a much-loved lady.
My thoughts are with her family, and her extended family on here flowers

Frannygranny Wed 06-Nov-13 17:46:36

My sympathy and thoughts to Carol's family. I will miss her very varied posts, she was so full of wit and life and no doubt if you had asked her she would have told you that this was the way she would have wanted to go. Her friends did a wonderful job trying to find her and keeping us up to date and I would like to thank them personally for all they did.

I have to add my sadness at her untimely passing. Carol sadly was estranged from a daughter like myself totally different circumstances of course I will keep her thoughtful supportive p messages she was. Kind to me. I did not agree with her politics but that did not matter. R.i.p. Carol so sad for her family and all of us.

MiceElf Wed 06-Nov-13 19:29:57

Carol was a brave, indomitable, principled wonderful woman. I only knew as an online presence but I really relished the discussions we had. What was humbling was the way in which, while holding steadfast to what she believed, she was able to modify her views and be gracious in saying so. Not many do that.

She loved so much, her mountains, the disadvantaged children she used to teach, and, above all, her beloved family.

Carol is no more, but her great spirit will live on in her family and in all those who have been touched by her presence. RIP

Hannoona Wed 06-Nov-13 20:43:41

I didn't know the lady but wish I had. She must have been a very special person to have this impact on those around her.
