small ring, fat finger, Dental Floss.....

Like many I will never be the size I was when I married my DDH. My wedding ring will not pass my knuckle and it looks unsightly. Has anyone tried the dental floss method of removing a tight wedding ring? I have looked on you tube and it looks quite easy, if a little painful.

Our idea is, because DDH's ring is now too loose and fits me (I wore it while he was in hospital last year as his fingers swelled.) We intend to swap the rings. This instead of me having to have mine made larger.

I haven't tried it, had to have my one from first marriage cut off after I moved it from left hand to right. Saved the bits though and took them along with some other odd bits of broken jewellery to a shop a couple of weeks ago and got £136 for them!

Windolene was mention when I googled it as helping to remove a ring, along with adult lubricant, ice and rubbing alcohol. Also said to try aspirin and raising your arm above your head.Fingers are less swollen at night.

phoenix it sounds as though you got a good price for your gold.
The year my first husband left me I found myself literally without a single pound just before Christmas, so I took my wedding and engagement rings to the local jeweller and asked him to give me a price for them. He obviously saw my desperation and guessed the circumstances and in spite of my pleas and proof of purchase price he would only give me £25 for the two - which was considerably less than their real second hand value. I accepted eventually because my children needed to eat, but I wasn't surprised to see them in the window a couple of days later - at a price several hundred pounds more than he had insisted they were worth.

I think I've been very lucky in finding a good one (recommended by a friend)

While I was in there I told her about a bangle that I have but haven't worn more than once in the past three years. She said she was happy to have a look at it, with no obligation. She also said that if it was very re-sellable, she would give ma a different price than the scrap price she had just paid me. I was very impressed by her professionalism, I had got a previous quote across the road before I went to her.

She weighed all the scrap stuff in front of me (the other place took it "out the back") then just as she was about to say a price she took one ring off and weighed it separately as it was 22 carat, and worth more.

On Saturday some friends in the trade popped round and I showed them the bangle, gold, with a safety chain and shaped like bamboo. They reckoned about £30.

I went to the same shop again and without even weighing it (she did look at the hallmarks and new she could re-sell it rather then scrapping) offered me £90! I was pretty chuffed!

Sorry flower this isn't helping your stuck ring, is it? tchblush

Dental Floss??? confused

KatyK Sun 08-Dec-13 21:14:42

I panic if I can't get my wedding (or any other) ring off. I don't know why. And I hate the fact that my DH is exactly the same weight as he was when we got married 44 years ago and I am not and has no such problems! confused

Flowerofthewest Sun 08-Dec-13 22:10:29

Same here KatyK. My DDH has lost a bit of weight in the last year and his ring falls off in cold weather. It does fit me though as I wore it while he was in hospital last year. Will try the floss thing and let you all know how it goes.

Many years ago a young doctor used the dental floss method to remove a dress ring for me. It didn't hurt at all...good luck. flowers

Flowerofthewest Mon 30-Dec-13 09:10:34

Tried the dental floss thing and nearly took the skin off. May try the cling film method next.

I am wincing at the discomfort of all this pulling and tugging brings tears to my eyes.good luck flowers

Hope you manage to get the ring off without too much pain flower. my OH lost weight in the year following our wedding and has stayed that way. He says it is down to his eating properly now (creep) wish it had done the same for me. We are like Mr andMrs Jack Spratt grin

Try massaging olive oil or similar around the ring and finger. Good luck!

JessM Mon 30-Dec-13 10:14:32

And cooling your hand down in a basin of tap water. I'd try cooling, then oiling, then raising above your head and then pulling. But if the joint is swollen you are probably dealing with an immovable object.
Please wait until your finger has recovered from dental floss abrasion as this may cause swelling.
My DGM used to use something similar - embroidery cotton maybe?

Agus Mon 30-Dec-13 10:14:34

Have you tried rubbing soap round your ring Flower? I've heard that works. Good luck

Agus Mon 30-Dec-13 10:16:56

Put your hand in a bowl of ice first. Should help take any swelling down.

JessM Mon 30-Dec-13 10:31:23

I like the lubricant suggestion BTW - file under "how many uses can you find for a tube of lube?"

glammanana Mon 30-Dec-13 12:56:21

My DD has suggested maybe washing up liquid would help ?

Flowerofthewest Mon 30-Dec-13 15:01:50

finger not swollen, just fatter than it was 4 stone ago. I stay away from the washing up bowl. grin

There is a way with cling film and soap or oil. May try that then we are going to swap wedding rings.

Anne58 Mon 30-Dec-13 16:34:49

Agus , I thought your suggestion of 10:14:34 was for constipation (innocent face)

Agus Mon 30-Dec-13 16:46:03

Oh excellent Phoenix That really made me laugh out loud. Just shared it with DH, so two likes from here grin

rosesarered Mon 30-Dec-13 18:06:24

I ease off tight rings with no water but a bit of liquid soap from dispenser.Turn the ring around on your finger as you pull it gently upwards, good luck!

Nonu Mon 30-Dec-13 18:13:12

Think that is more or less what GLAM said !
