Just read an article in the Guardian this morning about the English saying sorry to the Scots for everything we have ever done - thought it amusing. But do wonder what the GN'ers think. I am British/English but feel totally ambivalent about whether Scotland leaves the union, although pushed I would say "stay with us"

I don't want the BBC to be broken up, which is what the Scots Nats propose.

whitewave Thu 20-Feb-14 12:59:46

What does that mean a Scottish SBC and an English EBC?

mollie Thu 20-Feb-14 13:21:13

I hear that Lloyds will be moving TSB HQ back to the English side of the border soon just in case Scotland vote 'yes' - I wonder how many more companies will do the same?

Personally, I don't mind which way it goes but if the Scots vote 'yes' it should be a total break. I suspect it won't happen though ...

What I want to know is -why David Bowie felt moved to stick his oar in ? confused

rosesarered Thu 20-Feb-14 13:34:13

Celebs will do anything for more media coverage kitty Bowie doesn't live in Scotland does he?Or indeed in Britain, as far as I know.

rosesarered Thu 20-Feb-14 13:35:42

What would be more interesting on this thread [than what we English/Welsh/Northern Irish think] would be what way our Scottish G'netters will vote?

penguinpaperback Thu 20-Feb-14 13:36:06

Must admit I haven't really been following the news about it. What little I do know has made we wonder if Alex S wants to have it all ways. Independence but not when it comes down to the £. He always comes across to me as quite an unlike able chap. Does he charge students from England more than EU students to study in Scotland? A story I'd read.
I do feel Salmond comes over as very anti English.

kittylester Thu 20-Feb-14 13:41:21

roses, presumably he didn't pick up his award last night because he didn't deem it important enough to lose one of his non-domicile days. angry

I'd love to know which way GNs, who are eligible to vote - has that definitely been established? - will vote!

mollie Thu 20-Feb-14 13:46:11

Is Salmond anti-English or just in search of more power? I wonder what he'll do if he loses the vote?

thatbags Thu 20-Feb-14 13:58:33

I'm eligible to vote. I'll be voting no.

The British Broadcasting Corporation could remain as it is. After all, Scotland is only one part of the British Isles, and Scotland will still be British even if it chooses so-called independence from England and the rest of Britain. If Scotland needs its own broadcasting corporation, good luck to it I say.

But I hope the nos win.

thatbags Thu 20-Feb-14 14:00:04

I haven't read all the sorries yet but I think that is the crux for me about the whole issue, that Scottish Nationalists feel England has more to apologise for than otherwise. Chip. Shoulder.

I expect Scotland could apologise to various places if they thought about it in the same way.

thatbags Thu 20-Feb-14 14:01:27

PS Scotland Forever! Great country. No question of that.

mollie Thu 20-Feb-14 14:01:40

They should apologise for inflicting the fried mars bar and the like on us! And the bloomin' Krankies!

rosesarered Thu 20-Feb-14 14:02:39

Well done thatbags you are the first Scot to throw your hat into the ring.

thatbags Thu 20-Feb-14 14:09:35

Fried Mars Bars are fab!!

At least the half of one that I ate once was. ;) A friend and I felt we had to try it at least once. No regrets. It was lovely and not at all what we expected. Perfectly done (probably shallow fried if the truth be known), thin batter, served with chocolate ice-cream and an artistic drizzle of choc sauce. A lovely, once in a blue moon pudding.

GillT57 Thu 20-Feb-14 14:11:03

Well, I am Scottish but have lived in England since I was 7. I don't have the vote, but think I should. I would vote for a resounding NO. Alex Salmond is a self-serving Nationalist and is very anti-English. And yes, it is true about the students, if they are from EU such as France, Germany then Scotland pay their fees, if they are English they don't. I have children of university age, my daughter goes in 2015 and we are dissuading her from studying her chosen course in Edinburgh as we are not certain about funding and surely she would need a visa? Such a muddle. David Bowie is entitled to comment, just as much as Sean Connery the great Scots Nationalist who loves the country so much he lives in Marbella.

KatyK Thu 20-Feb-14 14:12:31

Bowie has lived in New York for about 30 years apparently

soop Thu 20-Feb-14 14:18:00

Scotland is "my land"...even though I'm not a Scot. Wouldn't want to live any other place on earth. Intend to die here and my ashes to be scattered on the beach of the Sound of Kintyre.
I do not trust Salmond. It will be a NO from me.
bags we must share a deep-fried Mars bar sometime. wink

kittylester Thu 20-Feb-14 14:19:13

At least Sean Connery is from Scotland Gill, I don't think David Bowie is Scottish is he?

soop Thu 20-Feb-14 14:19:14

MacSporran and Rory will also be voting NO!!!

Charleygirl Thu 20-Feb-14 14:29:04

I am Scottish but moved to England for a year in 1968 when I was offered a job. It has been a long year! I am not entitled to vote but if I did I would vote a resounding NO. Alex S seems to want it all his own way but still have England to lean on re the £ if everything goes pear shaped for him.

Aka Thu 20-Feb-14 14:35:15

If I was given the opportunity to vote it would be YES

whitewave Thu 20-Feb-14 14:58:28

I have read a bit about the issues involved and really if I was Scottish I would want much more information than they seem to be getting. It is no good voting "no" on a chip or "yes" on a nostalgic whim.

Questions like

If the Scots stick with the £ will they have any say in de-valuing, interest rates, etc etc

What share if assets/debits will be coming the Scots way and how is it to be decided.

What about the oil? Is it true that pipes are being laid to Newcastle from the North Sea

What happens to the NHS - how is that to be carved up

Loads more but you get the point

penguinpaperback Thu 20-Feb-14 15:01:25

I would love to know why English students pay more? Stories like this make me believe for Salmond, it's a case of anti English rather than pro Scotland. There was a BBC programme on late one night, might be a couple of years ago now which followed the lives of families living near the area Donald Trump was building his golf course. It was shameful, the poor people would find their fences torn down, lanes blocked by Trump's builders, security people. When interviewed these people didn't have any high regard for Alex Salmond!
