Any treasures in your loft ?

I think we have a few of those too. Plus the usual suitcases and Christmas decorations.
In our previous house which had a loft hatch that only a slim person could squeeze through, was an old fashioned sit up an beg cycle. We could never work out how it got there.

Ours was emptied nearly 3 years ago and nothing has crept back in since then. 90% of it was sent to the tip, but we did find my childhood collection of foreign dolls, my late FiL's train set and a large rug which had been forgotten about - it is now in the dining room and again living a useful life.

One house we lived in had an large oldfashioned mangle up in the attic.

Somewhere in the Centre Court at Wimbledon is an enormous machine that was involved in the building process and got built around. It has been there ever since.

When I moved to my present house in 1996, all of the loft contents were transferred here, costing me goodness knows how much money. Slowly over the years I have emptied it. I can no longer climb the loft ladder so it is just as well that it is empty.

Our house is an old Vicarage that dates from 1587. When we bought the house we discovered all the archives in a big cupboard in the barn which is part of the house. The local archivist is coming to help me sort it all out and then they will be given to the local Museum... and in a corner is the old cart which used to be the village hearse...

Cleared ours last year, then had the loft 'boarded' so safe to walk about as it's very big.So much storage room up there now, with hardly anything in it! Like others, Christmas decorations, suitcases, and a few empty computer boxes. We now need things to fill the empty space.There was nothing remotely valuable in the loft before we cleared it by the way.

Please tell me you live down the road to me roses, my attic is sagging under the weight of things stored there. You can definitely have a van load of mine to fill yours

There was no access to my roof space until I had a hatch put in and insulation laid. I assumed that nobody had ever set foot in it for the 200 years since it was built until the workmen pointed out that electricity wires ran through it. They had been put in via the adjoining house, which had access to its own loft and mine too. A similar situation could explain too-large items in other people's lofts.

We've lived here for 33 years and neither of us has ever been in the loft!

My loft is full of tank. Water tank. And the chimney goes through it as well.
In my last house I boarded the loft and used part as a work room and part for storage.
But during my marriage we moved into a house in Dundee, and in the eaves (used as cupboards) there was a dolls cradle which was almost a miniature of his family's handed down wooden cradle.

Katy - I couldn't live in a house and never see part of it!

Alie - Yes I suppose it is rather odd! Other people have been up there, to fit insulation etc but we haven't.

Nonu, I wish I could laugh about the junk in our loft.

We can't have satellite TV as no one can get into the loft to put the wire through for the dish. I live with a neat and tidy hoarder - I tell him he is a pain in the proverbial, but I still love him after 42 years.

We have a huge loft and DH enjoys keeping everything! I sneak up and take things out and throw them away or take to the charity shops but he is definitely winning! Same with sheds, mine is tidy and I can find anything I want, his is almost too full to enter.

We converted our loft into a small flat for our daughter so, yes, we have a treasure up there.
When we emptied it we found loads of old school bags, school folders and broken toys. The squirrels had got in and shredded my dress patterns for nesting material.

We have just put some more boxes into the attic again today, mostly DD2's which joins the rest of the contents of her flat up there. If she does ever come home again it would be easier to convert the attic into a flat for her rather than bring it all down again. That is if the floor of the attic doesn't give way first.
