Language is a funny thing and goes in phases. Once the term spastic was entirely acceptable, then people started using it in a derogatory way, so a new word had to be found. As a social worker I spent the first half of my career helping clients, but that fell out of favour and they became users (always sounded like junkies to me!).
It all depends whether the word elderly is being used in a derogatory way or a respectful way - in many cultures elders are held in high esteem.
I personally have no problem with it. It would be nice to be able to choose when it applies to oneself; but maybe we just have to take things in the spirit they are meant. If someone is using the word to put someone down, then by all means object; if not, then I am happy with it.
