Oh, I see Mishap, sorry. It wasn't clear from your OP that your DH had voted the way he did as a bit of a joke - I was assuming there was some reasoning behind his decision.

Let's just hope there weren't too many out there who thought like him.

I agree the thread does make uncomfortable reading but many posters are not contributing and if they did we might get a more balanced overall view.

I fear there will be a lot of votes for UKIP in my part of East Anglia. There was even a woman haranguing people outside the fitters where we took a tyre to repaired this morning. I went across the road to Tesco while DH waited for it to be done. He was accosted by said woman in a manner of, 'I hope you're going to vote UKIP' before loudly giving her reasons why he should.

He didn't tell me about it until we were nearly home. Probably a wise decision.

Even the Guardian has published a couple of articles which seem to understand why some people are feeling very threatened by the possibility of a continuing influx of unskilled labour into this country.

As Michele Hanson says, people who live in poor countries within the E U can't wait to get over here and share our comparative wealth (and who can blame them). However, it is likely to be the poor who will have to do the sharing.

Even in our little corner of North Devon I have seen a remarkable number of UKIP posters around.

And I don't even get out much!

I've just spoken to my ex [a stalwart of the Labour Party] and he says he, and everyone, he knows are voting UKIP as a protest vote .

The thing is, a protest vote could end up backfiring.

janerowena: I get your drift. The pluses don't really add up do they, as we can make our own smelly cheeses and we could afford to import peppers/avocados etc from our Commonwealth friends who are feeling very neglected these days.

There was an unbelievable choice here...... anybody heard of The Roman Party? it was on the ballot paper [but needless to say, I didn't vote for the person, but was tempted to for a mad nano second or two.]

There may have been a free Gladiator in it for me if I had.

Never fear mishap - I dragged DBH out to vote on your behalf. He hadn't been going to bother, but I told him he had to because of your OH. So it did have a positive outcome!

I voted this morning, but NOT for UKIP.

janerowena- good on you - If people do not vote, they lose the right to complain imho- and risk the country taking a direction they truly would not like to see come about.

Recently in Switzerland, there was a vote on limiting the number of immigrants from the old Eastern block, and part of EU. It passed- and then people were up in arms about it- most of them had not voted. Even worse, most young people did NOT vote- then realised the Erasmus program was closed to Swiss students due to the vote- and all the students- who had NOT voted for the most part, were up on the barricades complaining like crazy. If they had voted- the vote would have failed. A lot to learn from this.

I think some people were annoyed with themselves that they did not bother to vote in the Welsh Devolution Referendum.

The percentage of votes in favour was 50.3%
Against was 49.7%

A very close call indeed. But passed of course and if they were not in favour of devolution they only have themselves to blame.
