Oh dear. I enjoyed John Cooper Clark's appearance on HIGNFY last night - I've just told my daughter how funny the show was. Am I in a minority of one (not for the first time)?

Why do all these so called stars clap themselves when being introduced ?

.....and while I'm having a moan, what about those celeb hasbeens who come out to an introduction and 'conduct' the audience to make them cheer more? Leo Sayer (who I loved before he started to believe his own publicity) performs unprompted AND makes the audience cheer for him. Simon Cowell does it, so do Chris de Burgh, Peter Kay, Tony Hadley and (disappointing) Mick Jagger has started doing it. Mick - a tip - you don't need to ask for applause, you've still got it!

In the 1960s I was on a train in one of the old fashioned carriages where only 8 people can sit opposite each other.

There was an old chap (well I thought he was old) about 50 whose voice I recognised when he introduced himself to the carriage. He was an actor from the Archers who played one of the yokels.

He produced a whole pack of signed photos of himself and distributed them to us all quite unsolicited. No one had the guts to tell him to stick them !

Roses John Cooper Clark is a Liverpudlian performance poet who latched on to groups like the Scaffold to get on their bill, and whose Roger McGough is an excellent poet. He's about 65 now but seems to think he's still 17! His sister is Margi Clark, who was someone's (Tyrone's?) mother in Corrie. She's equally irritating!

It's the same with TV shows that 'could' be interesting or funny. Take '8 out of ten Cats does Countdown'. They get an idiot who reckons he can't make more than a 3 letter word out of 9 or add up to the level of an 8 year old. It's not funny you have just made me switch over idiot.

Blimey when hope you feel better after that! Actually I agree with you. We used to have a friend who was a Shakespearean actor and he always talked to you as if he was delivering a speech from King Lear for example. Also constantly checking himself in the mirror. At a party he would chat to someone with his eyes scanning the party unless he found someone else more interesting to talk to.
