Phones for me?

Not sure where to post this. I have a dilemma: I`m retiring soon and will have to give back my mobile phone. Fair enough. Its a work one and I pay for personal use. Anyway, what should I do now? The world of mobile phones is a mystery to me. Do I want a "smart" phone? Don't know. Should I do "pay as you go"? Should I take out a "contract" -I`ve got all the jargon but none of the understanding! What would I be daft to forget or overlook. What could I be missing? Any suggestions welcome. I don't want to be ripped off by salesmen.

I am an idiot!! After lots of research and finding a v helpful person in the EE phone shop I bought a Nokia Lumia. It all seemed idiot proof and the nice man said he`d set it all up. Just spent hours trying to get it set up with the result that I cant get emails at all on my PC ARGH!!! Will either chuck the damn thing out the window or leave it for 24 hours and try again. I might even have to get a man to sort it al out. Oh dear! It seemed like just the job and a good price too.

Too late. Am committed to the one I signed up for yesterday. However, the problem may lie with my existing email provider which has decided that my password, which has not changed, is no longer correct hence I cant access emails at all especially the ones I need from Microsoft with key codes I need for internet set up on the phone. Brilliant!! On checking online I gather this is a common enough problem. PC doctor visiting on Tuesday. More sighing.................
