It is certainly a spectacle, but somehow I find the whole thing rather creepy.

Rieu's style is not for me, although when I said that to my sister in law I thought she would never speak to me again! She's been all over the place to see him and thinks he's wonderful. I don't mind Strauss but it does go on a bit. Now, Lehar.... smile!

I`ve never been to an Andre Rieu concert, but I`d give my eye teeth for tickets! I`ve got a couple of dvds, and really love the spectacle, as well as the music.

Definitely not my thing. They are always advertising coach trips to Rieu concerts in my local press.

As for Daniel O`Donnell #runsawayscreaming

No don't like him at all.

feetlebaum Wed 15-Apr-15 22:22:33

I like the Viennese Waltz - so long as it is played by the Vienna Philharmonic... they understand that anticipated second beat.

Any 'concert' where the audience is invited to 'clap along' will be dire - for a start most folks clap on the wrong beats, which bogs the whole thing down...

Yep, I'm with you on that too AshTree.

AshTree Wed 15-Apr-15 20:07:12

The fact that Andre Rieu created an orchestra named after Johann Strauss is enough to put me off. If there's one genre of classical music I cannot abide it's the Viennese waltz.

I saw the SSO at the Festival Hall, very well worth seeing.

Marelli Wed 15-Apr-15 19:54:20

Now, that really does sound very nice indeed, Katek! smile

Katek Wed 15-Apr-15 19:34:24

Well, have made up my mind and booked tickets for BBC Scottish Symphony Christmas concert on 18th December instead. Thanks for input - helped to make up my mind! smile

Falconbird Wed 15-Apr-15 19:12:51

Sorry, never heard of him. smile

Lona Wed 15-Apr-15 19:11:21

I absolutely HATE his music and I can't bear to even look at the man!
This thread makes me feel a lot better!

We like Andre Rieu concerts, OTT, fun and spectacular, I defy anyone not to be tapping their feet.

Marelli Wed 15-Apr-15 18:14:05

A bit like Daniel O'Donnell (with large backing orchestra and choir, perhaps)? grin

loopylou Wed 15-Apr-15 18:09:52

A friend of mine said his concerts are full of old age groupies and in her opinion saccharine sweet and sickly - I take it as said that she won't be going again!

merlotgran Wed 15-Apr-15 18:06:16

I took Mum to see him many years ago. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be as the show was really slick and she enjoyed it. The audience was full of his fans though who had obviously seen him many times so sang along or clapped with everything angry and yes, they were all of the blue rinse brigade.

Katek Wed 15-Apr-15 17:51:44

Hmm. Kind of what I was thinking

TriciaF Wed 15-Apr-15 17:50:48

And me !

feetlebaum Wed 15-Apr-15 17:48:49

Ir's all a bit little-finger-in-the-air, blue-rinse, Hyacinth Bucket for me!

Mishap Wed 15-Apr-15 17:47:10

No - not my thing really - too bland.

Katek Wed 15-Apr-15 17:45:35

He's playing near us in December and I'm not sure whether to buy a ticket. I like his music in small doses but not sure if I would enjoy an entire evening. On the other hand I don't want to miss the opportunity. Has anyone been to see him ?
