jingl, mine's a Russell Hobbs very similar to yours, but it doesn't toast evenly, I have to turn the bread round halfway through...

Mine is far from crap, it's a four slicer with two separate controls so DH and I can cook toast just how we like it simultaneously, and it's never thrown the toast at me, so there !!!

Personally, I have to say the best toast on the planet is done on the end of a toasting fork over an open fire. Especially after catching on fire and being blown out several times. I've tried it on my 'open' fake coal gas fire - not the same .

Used to have a four slice toaster that did every thing. Tried Welsh rarebit, never been the same since.
Toast that has been burnt, scrapped, burnt and scraped again is the best.

Yes. And if it falls off the fork and into the fire you just bravely fish it out and still eat it.

The ash add a bitter edge that compliments the marmalade.

Welsh rarebit isn't a sandwich, though. The cheese would stick to the bag.

Falconbird you can't make toast without a few crumbs, hard to understand your DIL's viewpoint on this. deny children toast?Mind you, My Grandmother who was lovely but a bit OCD about cleaning refused to have bread in the kitchen that needed to be sliced for that same reason! so she only ever bought sliced bread.

Just buy a handheld vacuum cleaner! Simples!

Marmite (no butter) on toast, or homemade marmalade, delicious , never jam.
DH hates toast per se .....unless smothered in baked beans or as a fried egg sandwich.

Definitely not marmite (yuk!). Homemade whisky marmalade, honey, or just plain, unsalted butter. And I agree, loopy, never jam!

MIL negotiating the toaster, popping it up to see how it's doing, putting it back down again, the smell of burning throughout the house, the DC shouting 'Grandma, your toast is ready!' and MIL chuntering about my 'rubbish toaster'.

I am not keen on marmalade, so it has to be home-made jam!

Eeurghh no! Plain butter is good.

Ginger marmalade! I've got a jar hidden at the back of the cupboard so DH doesn't scoff it.

Yes, I like peanut butter on toast, but have to be in the mood for it, and it has to be smooth, not crunchy!

At the moment my preference is smoked salmon paté (only supermarket stuff!) but I may move on to Lime marmalade soon...
