Damn! I've run out of bread

My crumpets just did not pop up - had to scrabble around in the toaster with a pair of wooden tongs - does that count?

I love toast and have it every morning with marmalade. Must admit I have to keep an eye on it. Once two slices of bread caught fire.

On a serious note, I went on a Health and Safety Course when I was a volunteer in an OAP Home and the chap doing the talk said that toasters were a main cause of house fires and should never be left unattended.

Did anyone see the compilation of clips of video of cats getting a fright every time toast pops up out of a toaster? It was on "You've been Framed". Some of the cats got such a fright that they fell straight off the work surface or jumped up vertically. I wonder if anyone will be filming the Grans trying this? I think there's £200 per clip used. We all have our pensions to think of...........................

Small slices of bread are a greater challenge. They don't pop up far enough to get hold of, unless you stand over the toaster and catch them in midflight. Turning the toaster upside down to shake them out covers the place in toast crumbs, many of them burnt to cinders (must empty the crumb tray more often)

Bamboo tongs are useful for fishing out small bits of toast, crumpets, scotch pancakes etc
I got fed up of pressing the button time and again trying to catch them

Rose, where can these bamboo tongs be bought, I need some immediately if not sooner, sounds great.I will not be attempting this challenge, nor should anyone with a dicky ticker! no matter how many times we shake out and clean the toaster, we just can't get rid of all the detritus, we make too much toast and should really buy a new toaster every year as the solution.

I left it for ages, just went up in flames, pop up ??? Not sure my grill does that.

Must admit I don't often wait for the toast to pop up, I have to change its position during the operation otherwise it's not evenly done!

Toaster tongs easily found on Ebay, roses. They are also useful for fishing teabags out of mugs.

I was amazed when my toaster - one with a very strong spring - popped my toast very neatly on the plate beside it on the worktop. Try as I might, I could never get it to repeat this feat.

Are we brave or stupid in our house ?

We put ours in the toaster, and walk away DH and I are odd in that we both eat our toast cold.

Thanks peeps, I shall now buy some tongs.Nina, I am the same as you, can't bear hot toast, it has to be left on the plate to go cold and then buttered otherwise I can't eat it.Mr Roses enjoys hot buttered toast though I once read that the optimum pleasure (!) re toast, is that it is left for a min or two so that when you butter, some melts and some doesn't.

Yes, that's exactly how I like it roses but you have to get the timing exactly right!

Not odd ninathenana I hate soggy toast too!

I can't remember where I bought mine roses, but it was probably TK Maxx (but you can't rely on them being in stock)

MIL used to use a grill at home but when she came to stay she would pop up the toast to see how it was doing then put it back in. We regularly smelt burning when she came to stay!

DH likes the, too hot to handle buttered version. I'm with roses and Ana yum.

My Dil has put the toaster away and the grandchildren say she doesn't want to use it because it makes too many crumbs.

Problem - making toast is something my grandchildren and I love to do when I babysit.

Should I mention the toaster and the possibility of getting it out when I babysit.

My Dil is VERY tricky believe me.

Why have you all got crap toasters - or even none at all!? (*pomps*) Look. Like mine. twenty quid, lovely toast and a Google pop (without chucking toast halfway round kitchen)!

JBF, keep your comments about our toasters to your self, it was very spiteful, my grill is now sulking. Any more of that and we will all aim our toasters in your direction and you will be buried under amazing toast. Hope you have plenty of butter and marmalade ready.
