Codeword

Now stop me if you know this, but it annoys me when a newspaper only gives a few letters for a codeword game and then suggest you phone an expensive line to get some help.

I have discovered Crossword Solver you put in the number of letters the word is and then type in the letters you have and it gives you a list of possible answers. It's useful to note if there are any replicated letters in the word to help you select the Correct answer.

I only do this to get me started then continue from there on my own.

I too have what we refer as "the cheating machine" only use it to find the 9 letter anagram, have NEVER resorted to using using the phone to get extra letters!

I have only ever done the one in the Times which is very easy and requires neither expensive phone calls or a crossword solver. However, I would have thought that resorting to either source of help rather detracted from the pleasure of solving the puzzle.

I agree, absent. If you can't complete the puzzle yourself, that's it.

Where is the fun and sense of achievement in asking someone else to solve a puzzle for you?

Just persevere until you solve it yourself. It does get a lot easier the more you do as you will discover what to look for to get you started.

I only use the Crossword Solver for the first word and then my brain for the rest of Codeword, but I get your point about it not being all my own work.

It seems that you can all get yourself started without the use of technology, sadly I can't when like yesterday in the Independent it was 9 letters first letter P 7th letter K.

I love codeword puzzles, usually I manage to crack the first word and get going, occasionally I have mucked them up further along. I get really annoyed if I get stuck, pathetic really!

PRINTMISS Fri 15-May-15 14:47:32

Me too Terribull. It is very childish to get upset, but upset I get if I cannot do a puzzle I have started.

When I do the code word puzzles, I try to find all the e's first. E is the most widely used letter therefore there will be more number x than any other number. That is, after I have entered the letters given at the start. I also try to do the sudoku in the newspaper. I am not always successful with those.

Just realised that I was mixing my Codeword Puzzles with my Polyword one! (That's the one with 9 letters in it, have to make words of 4 letters or more, always including the letter in the centre) It says in the rules that plurals are not allowed, fair enough if you are just sticking an "s" on the end of the word, but I was a bit miffed recently when they wouldn't allow "MICE" because it's plural!

TerriBull Fri 15-May-15 15:16:46

Yes it is annoying Printmiss, sometimes I refuse to bin them and have bits of half done codewords lying around the house, but if I leave them for too long my ruthless husband chucks them in the bin shock but I have to concede life is too short to go back to half done puzzles that have got the better of me!

janerowena Fri 15-May-15 19:04:32

I wonder if she's been hacked? By a naughty GC perhaps? My 6 yr old GS typed some rather odd things on DD's FB page a month or so ago. At least we know he can spell 'poo'.

rosequartz Fri 15-May-15 19:07:19

Are you OK whitewave ?
