DD lives in a city with steep hills and in the 2010 her back garden looked like this. 10" of snow.

They also encountered sheet ice that winter making the roads impassable. No gritter would have got up the hills in or out of the close where she lives. DD walked 4 miles into work because other nurses on her team lived even further away.
I am glad I live on the relative flat. I spent that winter driving to work at 20mph through some beautiful hoar frost covered hedges.

The elements?

By December we've snow shovels, spades and a rug wrapped in plastic, plus salt. All so we can enter and exit our drive. It's 3 feet below the road, rounded and steep. Entering an A road sideways isn't to be recommended.

We ensure our 2 Maine Coons (cats) have sufficient food and cat litter.

We gradually buy in tins, dried milk, eggs, root veg, butter, pasta, rice, instant mash, sugar, tea, coffee and yeast extract. Forgot strong flour and yeast. Can't do without M####te. I don't know if I can use a brand name. and lastly a tin of chocolaty powder. which goes nicely with hot milk and a touch of alcohol.

Lastly, torch batteries, G#z for our small camping stoves and paraffin for our one lamp. Anyone still awake?
