Choirs - what are you singing at the moment?

My community choir is gearing up for Christmas and we are singing different arrangements (shock, horror) for well-known Carols e.g. "Away in a Manger" by Alan Woods and also "In the Bleak Midwinter" by Tom Race - singing at the Chistmas Tree lights on ceremony on the high street.

Also a new-fangled (well to me anyway) version of The Lord is My Shepherd (by Will Todd).

We're also singing "Stand By Me" which is lovely in harmony and same with "Unchained Melody" grin So the latter two I am singing along to on youtube, in alto grin whilst I am on Gransnet "working from home".

If you're in a choir and what are you singing at the mo?

Sounds lovely grannyknot. I'm no longer in a Choral Society since moving northwards and there isn't a choir here that I would join (all modern and swaying about not for me). The last thing I sang in was Samson which was glorious. Miss it terribly but the voice is not what it was. Have fun in your choir smile

Grannyknot Fri 16-Oct-15 12:43:23

teetime I'm amazed at how much my voice has improved again since I went back to the choir after a break of about three years, so I think practice helps! Or perhaps voices have a sort of "muscle memory". smile

Around the seasons for the first half of our concert and Christmas stuff afterwards. We all love 'Bethlehem' (from Martin Guerre, I think) and ' While Shepherds Watched' to the tune Lyngham, which is the favoured time in these parts.

Our Community choir is currently practising Carpenters songs (as in Karen and Richard) and we are also re-doing an alternative Holly and the Ivy, which we always enjoy singing.

I love the Carpenters songs! Especially We've only Just Begun - one that reminds me of when I met my husband. I can imagine it sung by a choir.
I always belonged to a choir, until we came to France . I could join one here, but it's the driving in the dark in winter that puts me off.

Nelliemoser Fri 16-Oct-15 14:34:08

Community choir carols for our carol service.
Choral society.
It's the conductor's final concert as he retiring at 80. We are doing choruses from the Messiah and Carmina Burana. Sacred to the rather profane, judging by what I was singing on Tuesday.
Such as
"In the winter
man is patient,
the breath of spring
makes him lust.
Oh! oh! oh!

My virginity
makes me frisky,
my simplicity
holds me back.
Oh! oh! oh!
shock wink
It's fun but a bit of a tongue twister in various versions of latin and german.

Our community choir's very diverse "core" repertoire includes:

I Will Sing Joy (gospel)
Ave Verum Corpus
Cantique de Jean Racine
Happy Together
Help
Gloria - Vivaldi
Wonderful World

I was in a small a capella choir before joining this much bigger, accompanied, choir in January this year. I'm enjoying it so much.

Grannyknot Fri 16-Oct-15 15:32:33

I am envy of singing Happy Together in a choir! When I was 17 it was my school boyfriend and my "song". And we certainly were ... smile so it always reminds me of him and those happy, carefree days. He was so good to me, I ditched him when I started working - what was I thinking! grin

I also love The Carpenters, am currently enjoying the CBBees version of "Calling occupants ... "

(I could only find it on a facebook link)

joanna we have sung Carpenters in our choir in the past, and for some reason (I have no idea why certain songs do this to me) - I became overwhelmed and had to dab at my eyes in a practice session grin on the first words of "Day after day, I must face a world of strangers where I don't belong..."

Grannyknot Fri 16-Oct-15 15:36:36

Thanks everyone else, some lovely music there - ideas I can take back to our very own Gareth Malone (but more camp).

Nelliemoser Fri 16-Oct-15 15:48:55

Eloethan That is a good range of music. Whose version of Ave Verum Corpus are you doing?. Most composers have had a go at it. I did a whole singing day doing old to new varieties of that a couple of weeks ago.

Luckygirl Fri 16-Oct-15 17:39:53

Schubert Mass in Eb with choral society; and Seal Lullaby by Eric Whitacre with the group that I run - and some other bits, including the Litany for All Souls by Schubert. Then we are on to Christmas stuff.

Eloethan Fri 16-Oct-15 19:00:56

*Nelliemoser" Mozart (Actually, not being very knowledgeable about music, I wasn't aware there were other versions so I'll have to seek them out and have a listen).

grannylyn65 Fri 16-Oct-15 19:24:11

Ave Verum
Rendevouz
Torrents in Summer

Treebee Fri 16-Oct-15 19:50:00

We are learning Hold My Hand by Jess Glynne, really enjoying it. Starting that Shakin Stevens Christmas song next week, shudder!

Nelliemoser Fri 16-Oct-15 19:52:12

Eloethan Mozarts version is really lovely. I sang that for the first time at the singing day. It is not difficult just lovely music.
I think Ave verum is a standard part of church liturgy, so many different composers have had a go at their own musical version to please their patrons.

Luckygirl Fri 16-Oct-15 22:32:28

It is lovely music - but the words are pretty gory!

Does anyone know of any choirs around the Huddersfield area? My DD would love to join one again but informed me she doesn't want an " old people's choir" - something more like a community choir.
Where is Gareth Malone when you need him??

vegasmags Tue 20-Oct-15 18:18:21

In my choral society, we have just performed Rossini Petite Messe Solonelle, and we will rehearse Christmas music in the next few weeks, but also start on Brahm's requiem which we are performing in March.

stillhere Tue 20-Oct-15 18:29:02

We haven't started our xmas music yet as we have a couple of other big concerts first, so off the top of my head, Tallis, If ye love me, Zadok, Rutter's For the Beauty of the earth, Ave Verum, Cantique de Jean Racine, Gibbons' Drop, drop slow tears, and a few madrigals. There is more but I have had a chesty infection so have been off for the past few weeks.

At the beginning of November the xmas stuff will start, heaven only knows what though, as we are being presented with new books. There's usually a fair amount of Kirby Shaw and Bob Chilcott and Rutter stuff, interspersed with pieces that have often been written and then largely forgotten, usually for a very good reason, in my opinion. grin

aprilgrace - this is a link to the Natural Voice Workshop which supports community choirs. The link I have posted is the result of searching for a community choir in Huddersfield. Hope you manage to find what you want and happy singing!

aprilgrace Wed 21-Oct-15 08:20:34

Thank you, Luckygirl. I'll pass that on to her. The one in Almondbury may be a possibility as she's not too far from there.

Gagagran Wed 21-Oct-15 08:39:23

We're rehearsing hard for our Christmas Concert on 9 December and my favourite new piece is "Pavane for a silent night" by Ravel. It's a lovely piece and good to sing. Recommend it. smile

Babs1952 Wed 21-Oct-15 09:24:38

I love choirs just wish I could sing!!!
