I haven't a clue either. I would just go along to John Lewis and ask the nice young person in charge of the small electricals what they can suggest.

Sounds as if you need some sort of speaker dock where you just plug your phone in and that's it. DH has an assortment of these (conservatory, sitting room, workshop, office!!) You can get little ones for sub £20-but sound isn't great-up to expensive brands like Bose. Sure JL will keep you right.

Thanks. I've got docks the phone/ipod kind of sits on, but I'm thinking more about the speakers that don't have any wires. I'll have a look at that article, though, and get myself to John Lewis.

DS2 & DGF have one, no wires. They just seem to point the phone at it and it plays.

Whatever next is you buy a new car that doesn't have a CD player and spend weeks trying to synch the music on your phone to your audio system! The people in the showroom were hopeless. "It's a new model and we've got someone going on a course". Even my tech savi s i l gave up in the end. He bought me a memory stick and showed me how to download my cd's onto it. Problem solved. It's simple. Just turn the speakers on and also the Bluetooth option on your phone. They will seek each other out.

Believe me, if I can do it anyone can!

PS you don't need to plug anything into anything.

I've got a Roberts DAB radio that is also a CD player and a blue tooth speaker.
It's as simple to use as Anya says and I have a big choice of music.

granny I'm always scared of words like "syncing" and "streaming". Sounds so other-worldly (to an old gimmer like me, anyway).

Be wary of getting a wi-fi speaker. I had a very expensive Bose one and it all worked fine, until and unless I went online on my laptop or iMac. Then it just kept breaking up and stuttering. As soon as I logged out on the computer the speaker was happy again. I took it back to the Apple shop and got a replacement, thinking it was faulty. The replacement behaved just the same. When I took that one back to Apple, I spoke to a different fellow there, who told me that this is a known issue! That was a couple of years ago, so maybe it's been sorted now, but check first.
I ended up buying a small Bose bluetooth speaker and have never had any trouble with it. It's very simple to set up - you just enable your bluetooth on your phone or tablet, then click on something like 'search for other devices'. As long as the bluetooth on your speaker is turned on (there's a bluetooth button on the top of mean that lights up when it's on), it will find it and then you can link them.

I treated myself to a Cambridge Audio bluetooth speaker from John Lewis, which gives a much better sound than iPad or laptop. I use it quite often, for listening to iplayer radio. It's great that I can take it around the house and listen anywhere.
Whatever speaker you get - it will come with instructions!

You can listen to them in JL, take along your own phone/ipod or whatever you have and they will demonstrate with your own music.

Thanks all. grannynot I wish these geeky sorts in shops WOULD use words like "seeking each other out": it would make far more sense. I still don't really know what "streaming" is. .

I've found the Bluetooth button on my phone, so next step is John Lewis! I quite fancy the sound of that Roberts combo too....

Streaming means listening to music or watching video in ‘real time’, instead of downloading a file to your computer and watching it later.

So am I "streaming" the News at the moment then.? I'm watching it in real time, not recording to watch later.

Depends on whether you're watching it on TV (which is just 'watching it on TV and NOT streaming) or if you've watching it on something like your iPad.

And what's 'trending' now

I have membership for Amazon Prime which means I can choose any of their Prime movies or TV programmes to stream on to iPad and watch. Or I could download them to watch later.
