I was the daughter of a factory worker and a shop assistant. My first job was for a bank and I earned £10 a week, it was 1964. My dad was shocked at my wage, telling me he had been at work for years before he earned that much.
I was a typical East Londoner and was overawed by the posh people I worked with. I tried to copy them and failed miserably. One day a customer called me as I was working , and asked me to fetch the Chief Clerk. Remembering not to say "there is a bloke at the counter who wants to see you"' I said in what I hoped was a posh reference, "there is a chap at the counter who wishes to speak with you".
The Cheif Clerk exploded, "A chap, I think you mean a Gentleman". I was so humiliated. I hated him and I hated that job.
‘The ‘professionals’ - finally finished, phew!
