I need a new pair of jeans, I have always worn them , but hurtling towards 70years old I wonder if I can still wear jeans and then I can't decide on what style, I like the skinny look but I don't have skinny legs, I would love to look effortlessly chic in jeans ,What do other GN,s think?

Yes, agree with the others, I am 70 and wouldn't be parted from my jeans. As has been said, black or dark denim look best on women of a certain age, but I do sometimes wear grey beige and even white in the summer! Why not if you feel good in them. I like M and S jeans too, but also find that Debenhams Collection straight cut fit me really well and are not wide. We're all different shapes so it's finding what suits you. My neighbour is 76 and like me wears them all the time.

Just to add about my jeans, finding a style that fits in the leg but isn't too tight on the waist that gives you the dreaded mutton top is half the problem in my search for perfect jeans , I am not too keen on elasticated waists as they tend to go baggy in the seat after a while,
Gosh, you wouldn't realise how much space can be written about a pair of jeans would you !! Smile

I live in jeans both dark denim and black ones, usually skinny so can tuck into boots and will be 70 very soon. In summer I wear with ballet pumps and also wear cropped denim jeans.

ChrissyH , It was really more about style , and not being able to find flattering ones for my 5,1 size 14 bod, ones that will keep their shape and not seat or go baggy on the bum , that , to me is an ageing look,
M&S straight leg that I used to buy seem wider lately,
Anyway, with all the posts and comments I got I am going shopping tomorrow dedicated to finding the perfect jeans my Thankyou you lovely ladies ,

Darling Lollypops,
Im pushing 80, ok, I m lucky enough to not look it due to family genes and a medical problem, I started wearing them about 12 years ago, I always wear the straight leg type. They do look elegant and are so easy to wear
Im 5.2 buy from M &S cost about £16 and I feel top hole wearing them - just one point, always wear clean jeans, they look a lot smarter once one is over 39!
Leave the wrecked style for 'others'...

I'm surprised that in this day and age you are asking whether you can wear jeans at 70. I'm approaching 70 and wouldn't consider changing the way I dress because of my age. I don't think you will look any different the day you turn 70 to when you were 69. Age is just a number, not a definition of who you are.

I am almost 73 & wear Jeans, I was 72 before I ever wore any lol always thought they were uncomfortable, how wrong I was, wear whatever your comfortable & happy in, these days anything goes & anyway what does it matter what others think, think of yourself & what you like, at our age if we can't do what we want & wear what we want, when can we smile

travelsafar I must be older than you. Levis weren't around when I got my first pair of jeans I had to shop at the Army and Navy store. My first were women's- zip at the side, I had to taper the legs and shrink them in the bath. (Yes we actually did that). I then went into men's- my mum and gran were shocked. Women didn't wear trousers with fly fronts. They actually said you could get arrested for wearing men's clothes! How things have changed.

Hollycat Sun 29-Jan-17 12:11:00

I'm 71 and I wear them. My last pair came from Bon Marche and are very smart and comfortable. I have an older friend who wears jeggins, they look OK, but I think that's pushing it somewhat

travelsafar Sun 29-Jan-17 11:55:06

i just get bemused by the different types of jeans that are available now.

When i was young it was Levi's or nothing, the more worn out they looked the better!!!!

I usually wear jeans, but would like to find some that are higher at the back, as I get fed up with having to yank them up at the waist, with or without a belt.
Any recommendations? Or am I just the wrong shape?

Ruby41 Sun 29-Jan-17 11:53:58

I'm 78 and have never even considered for one moment whether or not I'm too old for jeans! I've got quite a few pairs as I do tend to live in them - mostly jeggings from M & S - black or purple or dark denim, for the winter anyway. Sometimes have to wear leggings underneath in very cold weather. Comfortable and stylish (well, I think so anyway!) with longish tops.

Cornishgirl777 Sun 29-Jan-17 11:53:10

M&S have got their slim leg jeans back again...I find them just right, rather than straight or skinny

acanthus Sun 29-Jan-17 11:46:12

Jeans all the way for me and I'm past 70. I have about eight pairs on the go in various colours, but favour black or dark denim. Long gone are the days of elasticated-waist seamed 'slacks' - ugh! I'm on the short side so go for M & S short straight leg jeans. Skinny ones just wouldn't look good on my generous calves. I have always found straight leg jeans more flattering than the boot-leg ones so often recommended by Trinny & Susannah for shorties.

NonnaW Sun 29-Jan-17 11:42:39

I live in jeans and intend to keep doing so. I tend to buy from M&S, but have a great pair from Next (sale)) and also Tesco. I have some Tu jeggings and narrow jeans which I wear for dog walking (easy to just step into boots). I recently tried on some skinny jeans in M&S sale but they were just too skinny, like a second skin.

I am another 70 year old who wears jeans. The odd thing is that I never wore them when I was young. I wear NYDJ (Not Your Daughter's Jeans), with straight leg. They can be expensive but bargains can be found on Ebay. At the other end of the price spectrum Bon Marche elastic side waist fit me well. I am by no means slim, but as long as the size is right I feel they hold my tummy and bum firmly but comfortably.

Jalima Sun 29-Jan-17 11:21:33

ChristineF I just bought a pair of Dash needlecord jeans (dark navy) in the sale for £10.
Again, the waist is big so I have to wear a belt whIch may ruin my sleek silhouette grin I wish.

Lupin Sun 29-Jan-17 11:19:05

You can wear jeans at whatever age if you feel comfortable in them. I do - and I even wear jeggings. Jeggings - bought on the big side and worn with a tunic top can be very flattering - and I'm no Twiggy.Corduroy jeggings from Damart and M&S classics are fine, and compensate for an older figure. You buy jeans if you want some.

Jalima Sun 29-Jan-17 11:11:25

After years of not wearing jeans I started wearing them again when I was 70 so go for it!
.
I agree, the straight leg ones are a bit wide but very slim ones difficult to pull up!
And I have to wear a belt because what fits bum and tum is too loose in the waist.

Lyndylou I think many manufacturers have changed the leg length - regular used to be perfect now M&S regular is too long for me but short is too short.

I miss CC too.

Wobblybits Sun 29-Jan-17 11:02:16

Whitehair you are right, cut and fit are paramount, even a young bum does not look good in a pair of jeans with a saggy seat.

I am of course a style icon who only wears designer jeans, well Matalan ones with artistic emulsion decoration.

Whitehair123 Sun 29-Jan-17 10:56:52

General opinion is clearly wear jeans whatever your age. At 64 I intend to keep going with mine for as many years as I have left!

One cautionary tale, a friend of mine who is at least a size 14 if not 16, thinks she is a 12, buys a 12 and ends up with fat bulging out every where. Her jeans have to be bought from the places the youg trendy people shop, so her look in jeans is not pretty! Personally anything not well fitting is a no no, too tight equals ghastly uncomfy. My jeans have to have some stretch content and are worn with flattering tops. The friend's tops are as tight as the jeans, funny thing is she is always mocking how other people look but clearly sees a different look in her own mirror.

So the moral has to be wear what the hell you like but get the right size and cut!

sussexoldbag Sun 29-Jan-17 10:55:45

I live in jeans and always bought Country Casuals petite range. Now they have gone bust and I'm bereft......Precis jeans do not have the same fit or quality. I'm 5ft and 68.

Grandson2008 Sun 29-Jan-17 10:53:52

I live in jeggings all year round so comfortable I am 60 you can dress them up or down mine are from asda or sainsburys so not expensive peacocks do a good range as well so try them

Chattybarbara Sun 29-Jan-17 10:43:39

I wear jeans every single day, all colours but mainly dark blue denim or black - apart from the fact that I like wearing them, my hands are not strong enough to pull up tights these days, so it is rare that I wear a skirt unless it is in the summer when bare legs are ok. My mother told me when I was 30 that I was too old to wear jeans, I ignored her and continue to do so - even if you are a pensioner you can rebel!!

Dharmacat Sun 29-Jan-17 10:43:36

I am 74 and wear jeans every day - slim leg cut rather than skinny, in a range of colours but mainly black for smarter occasions. Tend to buy Brax jeans online from Peter Hahn but they are expensive. M & S Per Una Slim Leg are fitted in the thigh but fall without clinging like the skinny cut. I find that a tapered leg is more flattering - 30 - 34 cms at ankle.
