Have found 'Streetlife' so useful

Seacliff I think the email I got said Streetlife would cease to be in ten days (less now) so I would assume that all accounts which haven't transferred will cease to be as well.

I only changed over this morning before coming on to grantsnet.
So I've just checked my info because now I'm a little worried. My address doesn't have a number, only a name so I'm not sure if I can remove it, however I live in a village and a few of the villages round here share the same road name so the baddies will have to trawl round to find me. The site doesn't seem to show that I'm not in the village that it seems to be featuring so I'm not sure how that works but I'll hang on in there for a while.

I agree that there seems to be a lack of privacy. It seems to assume that you want to chat to your neighbour's and that you trust them. I am not moving moving over.

I too, was sorry to see that Streetlife is transferring to Nextdoor. I've found it useful for disposing of unwanted goods - either sold or given away. However, I'm with Pittcity in that I will reserve judgement for now.
It is meant to be a Community website, and will rely on a good number of members to work - as did Streetlife, I hope it does, but have noticed many SLers cancelling their membership, so only time will tell.
As for privacy - well, plenty is known about you if you use a loyalty card, drive a car, and use a mobile phone - but you don't notice it - so I shall continue to be a part of my local community for the time being.

I live in a cul de sac of 7 houses...wouldn't be hard to work out which one we are :-)

I think I mostly object to the lack of info - as transitions go - this one was rubbish. Perhaps more notice, more info and a softer transition would not have had people leaving.

Nanthewiser although all your details are out there in the big internet world that s quite different to being identified on a forum Here's an illustration imagine I put up something like ' I wish the neighbourhood cats wouldn't poo in my garden' Quite an innocuous statement but that rough guy two doors down takes exception to it and thinks your talking about his cat he quickly works out who you are and starts a bit of a vendetta against you It's very different for companies to be able to find information about you to a neighbour who you wouldn't normally talk to knowing your thoughts and intentions

Thanks from me too for your help, have now left Street life. I will have another look at next door when it's settled. We live in a remote hamlet, so not much happening.

I don't like the idea of moving to an American run forum so I have now left Street life. I found a site called mylocalforum and so far it looks pretty good. It's British run and so the security is as it should be. The new forum has all areas and towns/villages and when I went in, it said that they will add any area, town or village if it's not there, but there are tons of areas on a drop down list to choose from. I'm giving it a go and I noticed there are lots of Street life people on there chatting already, so could be the next street life for us all, hope so!

Streetlife was very useful specially as living in a small village could find all kinds of contacts. I received em from Nextdoor asking me to switch over. I did and now regret it as they made sure I had given my personal details before a screen pops up asking me to sign up 10 new members. Joke - lucky if there are 10 people living here who are computer literate and I dont mean that in an unkind way. After reading all the comments about this new American style Nextdoor I am now going to delete info I have given them. I want no part of being spied on from across the sea.

I was a member of Streetlife and hardly posted but read a lot of useful information about local events and concerns on there.
Now I've cancelled my account as am concerned by the lack of privacy.
It's no skin off my nose, but so many people were regulars on there and had regular meets. Hopefully they can continue in some way if they don't transfer their accounts.

I was on streetlife and found it informative and useful. I have now left Nextdoor because of the lack of privacy.

I don't want anyone working out where/who I am thanks.

There are nutters in the world, that should be obvious to anyone who uses the internet. And I don't want one on my doorstep.

I've just tried to join mylocalforum it looks interesting but I live in London and none of the London Boroughs appear in the list of Counties so I can't join till I select a county.. anyone help?

Well having read through much of this thread, for once I'm grateful for my dreadful procrastinating nature. I shall not be transferring to Nextdoor. Thanks all for the warning!

I too tried my.mylocalforum Tanith and there's 0 for my town although it's the second largest town in my county so can only presume a lot of areas aren't represented

I've looked at mylocalforum and it's very similar to GN local in format. A local directory, calendar and forum for members to fill in. You can hide behind a pseudonym and the whole thing is open for anyone to see or add to. It is indexed on Google and the best bits are advertised on Facebook and Twitter.
Nextdoor is much more private as there is no Google, Facebook or Twitter etc. Conversations are only seen in the areas you choose and your profile seen in your area only.
Neither are like Streetlife which was a hybrid and just right.
There is nobody on our local mylocalforum and our GN local is buzzing, so I'm off there!

Most people seem to be switching and conversations are carrying on as normal. Apart from being awarded a star for introducing someone (who would have moved over anyway) nothing seems that different. I find this idea of being awarded points rather demeaning. Like giving six year olds gold stars. I think I may be sent to the bottom of the class!

I have a friend who joins all these forums using made up names and had no trouble using one on Nextdoor.

I just pressed the 'skip' button on Nextdoor, when asked to sign up people.

Well that doesn't make sense Pittcity because you have to verify your name and address so how can you make it up ?

You used to get the equivalent of 'stars' on Streetlife when if first started - for posting more than once, starting a conversation etc. Tailed off eventually though...

It quite clearly says here that you must use your correct name, no alias, abbreviation, etc.

Nextdoor

Yes Riverwalk but this is only questioned if somebody reports it, it is not possible for them to check this in the verification process. Most of us use our real name.

Reports go to neighbourhood leads who are people in your area and would, I hope, listen to an argument for using an alias.
