Easter Eggs

Jalima no-one, anywhere, in any way, has said that Easter Eggs may not be called Easter Eggs and I am sure the same people who didn't say that wouldn't say you may not call the cake you have at Christmas a Christmas Cake. It is just a question of being even handed to those who occasionally chose to say 'egg' or 'cake' instead. If anyone thinks this is really still a Christian country they are not going to church regularly.

Sunseeker it would be good if you got your facts right. No one, anywhere has said people may not call then anything they choose to EXCEPT those who are waving there so called Christianity and saying Cadbury's/The National Trust should be pilloried because they chose to call them 'eggs' in one place while the word Easter was scattered everywhere else.

All this makes me realise just how Christian those who flaunt there so-called Christianity are.

As far as I am aware no-one is being "pilloried". To be honest I can't be bothered to discuss this with you anymore - I mean I could agree with you, but then we would both be wrong.

Maybe they should be called "on sale from practically the day after Boxing Day eggs"

Did you hear what the Archbishop of York said sunseeker. The Guardian had an online headline "The war on Easter eggs v the Archbishop of York – who will crack first? " He said it’s “tantamount to spitting on the grave of Cadbury”. The Cadbury family do not agree. It is out of all proportion.

In the article it also says. With regard to Cadbury's wiping out Easter

So Cadbury isn’t erasing Easter at all? It is! John Sentamu said it is, and Theresa May said it is, so it definitely is! Look, I have to be outraged about something or I’ll die! Save Gibraltar! Bring back blue passports!
Do say: “It’s irresponsible for Cadbury’s to erase the word ‘Easter’, even if it hasn’t.”
Don’t say: “Coming soon: chocolate stigmata!”

Obviously someone sees the irony in constantly outraged grown people being taken in by fake news.

I feel strongly about people making things up just to have a chance to be outraged roses. This may be reasonably insignificant except, perhaps, that our Prime Minister has brought our leading political office, which she is holding in our names, into disrepute by using fake news to appeal to those of her constituency with the least critical abilities.

Or, to put it simply, I don't like lies.

Not only did May think it important to talk about Easter eggs when she was in Saudi, but she talked about the horrors of Syria. No sense of irony.
Our links with Saudi are being investigated by Scotland Yard. Quick, lets complain about the National Trust.
I condemn Syria, but at least I do it from a better standpoint than May does.
Liam Fox is trying to drum up trade in the Philippines, talking to Duterte who encourages civilians to kill drug addicts.
So that's okay, but not Cadbury's not mentioning Easter on the National Trust eggs.

So this is the event that people are complaining about without really having seen the "offending" poster (there seems to be a pretty big reference to Easter). Is this really the biggest issue for Theresa May as I don't actually understand her problem with it

well you learn something new every day....who would ever have believed Theresa May was a christian....more unchristian policies are hard to come by.All this nonsense over chocolate eggs ...beggars belief.Its in the same league as the eegits celebrating the return of their "british" passports...and here was me thinking they were always british ....roll on my scottish one

Totally agree with NanaandGrampy I too will be buying loads of EASTER eggs. Some for the grandchildren and some for extended family and a few of the neighbours children too. Is anyome really offended by Easter Eggs? I mean really?

My grandchildren are currently learning about EASTER at school and DGS (7) came home with a wonderful model he had made of the 3 crosses on the hill. Together with the tomb and the stone (that could be rolled away) . Very clever. He was able to recount the entire story to me too.

As for Eostre I have never heard of it and really have little desire to learn. Oh and I really don't think you have to go to church regularly to be a Christian either. I personally am a non believer for reasons of my own, but I know plenty of people who believe in God and follow Christain values and traditions who do not attend church regularly.

Leave our traditions alone.

Asda have lovely little EASTER eggs (from most manufacturers) for 99p which I wouldn't call overpriced.

Eggs and buns sold all year round who cares what they are called, bring me eggs, bring me buns...........I can't wait for Boxing day when the easter eggs hit the shelves.

I'm Wiccan, but to the best of my knowledge every religion has a spring festival and although I don't normally eat Easter Eggs, apart from the ones like egg-shaped Smarties which I like at any time of year. I'm also hooked on Jelly Babies, which this year I've found in rabbit shapes made by Maynards - Jelly Bunnies. If you're looking for eggs for GKs suggest that you buy one of those cardboard refillable ones available from Christian shops or if you're crafty, just make a small nest and fill them with Dolly Mixture, Smarties or whatever. Or call those over-priced "Easter Eggs" Easter Eggs and don't worry about Cadbury. Personally wouldn't buy anything with the Cadbury name anway - sickly and horrible after-taste since they were taken over.

NannyandGrampy, Gillybob and any others, I understand that you are feeling you must make a point but please explain why. I just don't get it No one has said anyone may NOT call their eggs Easter Eggs; as far as anyone has made us aware on this thread it just hasn't come up, so please, what are you making your point about?

But if you look at the NT publicity it says something like Easter Fun - join the Cadburys great egg hunt! In other words it does mention Easter and this is all a fuss about nothing! But calling it a cadbury's egg hunt is of course promoting Cadbury's!
As for the Easter bunny I thought that came from America. When I was a child we decorated hens eggs and had ONE chocolate egg. No mention of bunnies or egg hunts then!
I agree that eggs originally came from a pagan tradition celebrating spring but the idea of new life fits in well with the resurrestion of Jesus and some say cracking open the eggs represents the opening of the tomb. Its all symbolic (except for bunnies!)

In response to GGM2 and rosesarered, our church, St Laurence and All Saints, Eastwood, will be full on Easter Sunday. There will be a dawn service at 5 am which we have attended in previous years, although not this year - DH still recovering from surgery. We'll go to Family Eucharist instead.

As someone else said, Easter is actually the most important event in the Christian year, more so than Christmas.

We shan't be buying any Easter eggs - all GC are grown up and no one wants them.

I didn't grow up with chocolate Easter eggs - all sweets were rationed! We used to boil eggs with various things to make them different colours, then roll them down a hill on Easter Monday.

If I ever eat chocolate now it's got to be better quality than what Cadbury's make.

Yes, you agree with me and others Margrete in that the churches will be very full, in fact if you are late it's standing room only in churches for Easter services. I expect that
GGM2 either never goes to church, so is guessing that not many do, or it is a very long time since she went to one.
