Although we no,longer have a dog, I would choose a dog friendly pub or restaurant every time. There's usually a nicer, more relaxed atmosphere, and I really enjoy meeting other people's dogs.
There are plenty of no-dog places to choose from if you don't like them.
As for the 'hygiene' issue, IMO most dogs are no dirtier than the average human. I'd be interested to know how many blokes coming out of the men's loos in any restaurant after a pee, will have washed their hands.
Nothing like 100%, I bet.
