Who peels mushrooms?

Just finished preparing sausage casserole for grandchildren's tea tonight.
I wiped the mushrooms, sliced them and added them to the dish.
But I have a friend who PEELS them before she uses them. Says they are dirty otherwise.
What does everyone do?

I just wipe off any big bits of whatever it is and cook them.

Menopaws Mon 24-Jul-17 18:04:32

No way, blow off bits. I wouldn't use them so often if I had to peel them, have enough trouble peeling potatoes

BlueBelle Mon 24-Jul-17 18:09:26

They are so blooming simple to peel no knives or peelers just a simple pull back about four or five times 2 secs job Now the difficult things are like tomatoes if you want to peel them I don't bother unless they are tough skins

Menopaws Mon 24-Jul-17 18:17:36

I know just got better things to do and skin adds flavour

I had a DF who bought mushroom stalks. We lived near a mushroom farm in the early 1950s and DF used to buy them direct from the farm. I think they were 2/- a lb for stalks. 4/- for the mushrooms themselves.

Since then I have always preferred stalks, more substantial and more flavour.

I can't believe any of you peel button mushrooms! shock

You reminded me that I had a mushroom brush - a result of my lakeland obsession. I think it was very useful but never for brushing mushrooms.

My granny grew mushrooms in her (very dark, damp and scary!) cellar.

I once had a summer job when I was young, picking mushrooms. I think that they were grown in horse manure, but I may be wrong, it was a long time ago! Having said that I have never washed a mushroom and I'm still here!

LadyGracie Mon 24-Jul-17 19:05:54

I peel mine, I always have, no one else in the family does

NEVER PEEL.as nutrients are then lost..just knock off any bits of compost....

Anya Mon 24-Jul-17 19:35:09

Nope, never peel them. Any left are dried and used up in soups and stews.

GrandmaMoira Mon 24-Jul-17 19:39:51

I've never peeled mushrooms.

Jalima1108 Mon 24-Jul-17 21:43:09

I wash them under the tap, but if they're a bit past their best I peel them, easy to do, the peel just pulls off.

And life is far too short to stuff them.
Lovely with just some butter and garlic in the middle of those very large ones then done in the oven.
Yum

I read somewhere that you should put mushrooms outside in the sun and they absorb lots of vitamin D.

Alternatively, you could sit outside in the sun yourself while they cook and get your vitamin D that way.

Jalima1108 Mon 24-Jul-17 21:45:37

The correct thing is never to wash mushrooms. They should only be wiped.

Oh!

That's true Jalima - about Vit D

Never peel them! too much of a performance.

Craftycat Tue 25-Jul-17 10:00:15

Never peeled a mushroom in my life & not about to start now!

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 25-Jul-17 10:04:16

I just wipe over the small ones but peel the very large ones. I love mushrooms but don't remember eating them at all as a child - I think perhaps they were considered too exotic in our house.

Lilyflower Tue 25-Jul-17 10:14:12

I wipe mushrooms unless they are really grubby. They absorb water so it ruins the flavour to douse them.

W11girl Tue 25-Jul-17 10:15:25

I used to peel them until I realised it is better not to. Just give them a good wipe and thrown them in!

Cubagran Tue 25-Jul-17 10:22:25

Just wipe if they're a bit grubby.

Direne3 Tue 25-Jul-17 10:22:36

Know it's perhaps wrong but I always peel the organic mushrooms that I buy from our 'real food' shop. Assume they're grown in chicken compost (poo), or similar.

Sheilasue Tue 25-Jul-17 10:27:13

No just wipe them with a piece of kitchen roll.

Teetime Tue 25-Jul-17 10:30:31

I did by some mushroom compost once which was full of wood lice!

clareken Tue 25-Jul-17 10:46:01

Poshgran, love that, it so applies to MrK!
