Why do so many Young girls talk with a croak in their voices.

A friend has a husky voice since a childhood throat operation, it's very attractive.

And just how often, MawBroon, do you see that four on TV?
The younger ones do not compare.

Not strictly relevant but has anyone else noted that when asked a question (on t.v or radio particularly) almost everyone begins their answer with "So" ?

Never watch US TV so I don’t even know what NCIS stands for but I would be surprised if they could beat the likes of Kate Adie, Orla Guerin, Matt Frei or Frank Gardner.

It is so annoying. They have no idea how to talk on camera and have not been taught as they should have been. Yet even some men do this as well. And in all US programmes there will be instances with the notable exception of NCIS. Perhaps this emphasises why that series is at the top.

The man has had an outstanding career as a journalist and broadcaster and it is to his credit that he fought back from the cancer which could have killed him.

Water meadow, I've admired Nick Robinson for returning to work and the BBC for maintaining his contract.
To start your comment by saying "sorry " is passive aggressive. You aren't sorry at all. He is not in the wrong job and I hope he remains well and able to work.

Watermeadow that's a awful thing to say about Nicky Robinson. His voice isn't "horrible"; it's what he was left with as the result of cancer. I hope there aren't any GNetters on here who have had to learn to speak again, as the result of serious illness, who now think that they too have a "horrible voice". Really unkind comment.

I agree about the gangster intonations I hate hearing dat I suppose it is catching like all camp men ( not all gay men but the very camp ones) have the same way of talking Far more feminine than women

Haven’t heard this as yet ( croaky voices) but I suppose it will soon vanish as a fad.

It seems to be an affectation amongst young girls, it goes alongside the folded arms and bored with life facial expression!
I'm always tempted to give them a good shake!

I've just listened for about three seconds (couldn't bear it any longer) on that You Tube thing - what a dreadful racket!
I've noticed too that with Country Music there seems to be a lot of young US ladies with what I call a dreadful twang - or shrill sounding voice. How on earth can this be considered musical? Dear me!
Give me a lovely deep baritone - Tom Jones, David Coverdale or Rag 'n' Bone Man (down with the kids?) and the adorable liquid velvet which was Ella Fitzgerald.

All the 'fries' and 'isms' are the result of person after person imitating one another (usually from people they admire). The catalyst is the grade school mentality inherent in this, not unlike the now outdated California Valley Girl speak of the 1980s.

I'm from the US and I'm thankful that most mature, well educated adults don't speak like that here. Idiosyncrasies such as these appear to affect the younger set and they are popularized by the media in TV commercials, Sit Coms, etc.

Fortunately, all these fads have a short shelf life because they are soon replaced by new and even more annoying ones.

I've noticed that Millie MacIntosh formerly on Made in Chelsea has this croak in her voice, and one or two others whose names escape me.

I had a quite serious croak for months so went to see GP. Was referred to ENT specialist who gave me endoscopy and diagnosed silent reflux. I did not have heartburn until I took the prescribed medication. Now drinking aloe vera gel each day instead and there is improvement. Maybe these girls need to see a doctor.

The ones I dislike are young people who speak as if they are of afro Caribbean descent and finish every sentence with innit?

I wonder if they are copying Holly Willoughby . She is the only person I have noticed doing it.
As for Nick Robertson /Robinson comment ..his was caused by cancer ..not purposefully done .

Grampie, any problem with your voice should be investigated if it has not resolved in 3 weeks. Probably nothing to worry about, but you should see your GP (I'm a retired Speech and Language Therapist). As for original post, 'glottal fry' it is a silly fashion which could cause vocal fold ('chord') damage if overdone.

I love those Lord Peter Whimsey novels, what ho anyone? Same with many novels written at the same time, Jeeves and Wooster for example.
Patterns of speech change over time as demonstrated when we hear newsreel from the 50's or 60's . They're only young once as we all know only too well. Let them enjoy being part of stuff that makes them identify with their own age group. It is easily understood so we don't need interpreters.
