On the 'Good Morning' thread Mick often gives us reviews of shows he has seen - especially musicals.

I thought it might be good to have a thread for recommendations.

So, what have you seen that was good....or bad?

42nd Street - best show I've ever seen. Unbelievably good singing and dancing and wonderful set and costumes. Seen it twice already!

42nd Street. Absolutely fantastic. Loved the tapping. It brought tears to my eyes as I always wanted to be a dancer. Especially tap. A tip for anyone who can be bothered. If you turn up at the Drury Lane Theatre at 10am. for a Wednesday matinee which starts at 2.30. You can get really good seats for £15. My friend and I did that and were in the stalls six rows back. They say first come first served but when we got there there was no queue and we just paid at the box office

brunswick Thu 26-Oct-17 10:41:45

Yes Terrystred I want to see it again

Seen Blood Brothers about 6 times. Loved Sunny Afternoon as we are both Kinks fans. Also Jersey Boys. One of the funniest I've ever seen is The Book of Mormon but don't go if you are easily offended!

Blood Brothers... love it! The Play that goes Wrong.. the funniest theatre I’ve ever seen! Out of Order, also great. Recently saw High Society at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, great production. I have an ATG theatre card which gives priority booking with no fees and advance notice of performances in Scotland, use it a lot and it is worth the annual cot as it saves quite a lot.

If you can handle smutty, The Book of Mormon is hysterical. I haven't laughed so much in ages.

Another vote for Blood Brothers, I’ve seen it twice. The first time was in London for my husband’s 50th birthday - he wasn't a fan of musicals but Barbara Dixon was in it and he was a big fan of hers. Carl Wayne, who was in The Move in the sixties played the narrator and was fantastic. We both thought it was amazing and bought the CD.

More recently I’ve seen The Kite Runner which was very good and One Man Two Guvnors starring James Corden which was very funny.

Went to see Cabaret at the Grand Theatre in Leeds yesterday. Great performance & Will Young as the Emcee was exceptional!

I'm going to see 'the steamie ' soon. My friend has seen it already & enjoyed it that much she jumped at the chance to see it again with me. ?

Although I quite like Les Mis for me it was on far too long. I was clock watching.

I have seen Chicago x2 and would go again if the opportunity arose. I enjoyed We Will Rock You but I am an avid Queen fan. Some people did walk out at the first interval so maybe it is not for everybody. My friend and I were standing up singing- we did not empty the theatre.

Blood Brothers & Girls (Musical of Calendar Girls)

We love musicals and recently been going to these dancing shows. Saw Burn the Floor and Rip it up. Have just booked James and Ola for next March and hope to see Remembering Fred with Aliash and Janette. All the Strictly dancers are doing it. The shows are fantastic and can recommend. Les Mis is my favourite show.

Nvella Thu 26-Oct-17 13:36:51

Not mad about musicals but Girl from the North Country was brilliant - Shirley Henderson was amazing

Granny23 Thu 26-Oct-17 13:51:59

Enjoyed both Sunny Afternoon and We will Rock You in Edinburgh but best of all ( for viewers in Scotland only ) is The Steamie . Sister and I saw it a fortnight ago at the McRobert, fifth time for me and it seems to get funnier every time as you know what is coming next.

Our other (Scotland only) favourite is Phil and Aly's St Andrews show in Glasgow - fab-u-lous!

carol58 Thu 26-Oct-17 14:36:20

The Magic of Motown - fabulous. Didn't sit down all evening! Good job everyone else wanted to dance too!

carol58 Thu 26-Oct-17 14:59:45

Oh & Mamma Mia was lovely. Another dancing one! Off to see The Band (Take That) early next year too. Bit of a theme here lol! A little gang of us love to sing & dance so these shows are ideal. We always sit back row of stalls so as not to disturb other's view btw! Also love ballet so seeing The Nutcracker in December with my daughter.

It's a little 'off-piste' however, I really enjoyed Rob Brydon's show (I Am Standing Up) he's very funny and doesn't rely on bad language or smut to be funny. He can sing too.
Also loved Paul Carrack - he has an amazing voice, saw him in February and have tickets for next year. You may wonder if a laid-back and modest character like him can get the audience on its feet - yes, he most definitely can.

onneker Thu 26-Oct-17 17:20:38

Another vote for Girl from the North Country but probably better if you like Bob Dylan's music. It made me cry. Oslo is brilliant, thought-provoking and funny as well. That nearly made me cry too as the lost opportunity for peace between the Israelis and Palestinians

I do love a good show ? seen lots the last was Kinky Boots and it was fabulous!
I’m going to London again soon and will go toTKTs booth for a bargain again as I haven’t seen Book of Mormon or 42nd Street but will take anything really.

chattykathy Thu 26-Oct-17 17:29:45

'Beautiful' is now touring. I'm going to see it in Birmingham soon after seeing it in London last year. It's a great show.

maryhoffman37 Thu 26-Oct-17 17:54:19

I recommend Kinky Boots, based on the film of the same name.

Chimaera Thu 26-Oct-17 19:00:51

We took my mum (87!) to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time - we both loved the book but I was concerned how it would translate to the stage. Very loud and sweary in parts - but in context. It was magnificent and heartwarming. I would recommend it to anyone!

LuckyFour Thu 26-Oct-17 19:21:39

Saw a good play at the Northcott in Exeter - The Weir. Very rare we have something good to see down here. You don't know you're born up in London. However, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else but here.

grannysue2 Thu 26-Oct-17 20:06:13

I've just seen Duet for One; Belinda Lang and Oliver Cotton in an awesome performance. It's touring the country, currently in Richmond Surrey, then Edinburgh,Malvern, and Chichester. See it while you can!
Very moving and thought provoking.

I agree with all of the shows recommended here, I have seen most of them, but I agree with you KatyK - Cats was rubbish!! Just don't understand how it has gone on for so long. I love all types of theatre, but Cats just didn't do it for me.
