Tight Under Trousers

I work in a care home and we are only supposed to wear flat shoes so I wore a pair of boots to work as it is rele wet and windy here today and was just changing my boots to my flat shoes when one of my work colleagues remarked that she should have worn socks as well as was cold, I replied that they werent actually socks and they were actually a pair of wooly tights I had on underneath. She then asked why I was wearing tights under trousers and I told her it was a cold day plus I go outside for a ciggie on my breaks. She then said that wearing tights under trousers is wrong though to be honest I do not see what is wrong with this at all.

Oh, come on Mawbroon, we have had far more vacuous threads than this one. The OP was taken aback by a colleague telling her a clothing combination she was wearing was 'wrong'. There seems nothing vacuous about that. She was a bit taken aback and wondered whether she was missing out on something so decided to put it on GN to see if anyone could elucidate the issue, which Nannarose did.

She has also had a lot of support to say that there was nothing 'wrong' with her clothing choice and, if there is, there plenty more in the wrong with her.

I wear woolly tights under trousers. If it's cold I'll also wear leggings and socks! Sod it if my trousers don't hang right, at my age I want to be cosy, nobody is looking at how my trousers hang!

Marydoll Sun 29-Oct-17 20:01:26

I agree, but we still keep posting grin

MawBroon Sun 29-Oct-17 19:59:47

I still find myself reading the thread title as Tight Undertrousers ! grin
We haven’t had a contribution from Clark Kent (or John Major) yet, but for sheer vacuity, this thread takes the proverbial biscuit hmm

Wearing tights under trousers is "wrong"??? Your colleague is not only a nitwit but a rude one too. In the colder months I've always worn tights under trousers, and jeans for that matter. I've never had thrush - wouldn't recognise it even if it warbled at me...

M0nica Sun 29-Oct-17 19:01:22

Well, I wear tights with trousers and have never suffered from thrush or any similar conditions in the genital area, and while I can see that is good advice for those who do have these problems, if you don't, you can ignore it. Not only do I wear tights, but in winter I wear socks as well.

There are no rules, just wear what you are comfortable in and ignore the petty conformity of other peoples 'rules' on the clothes combinations you should or should not wear.

Lemongrove I have my doubts. Someone upthread mentioned a spelling quirk common to both Sharon and Lesley berry, which I had spotted too. Perhaps they are twins, who knows? But causes me to wonder - as do you - whether this is indeed “kosher”. But waddever.

Nannarose Sun 29-Oct-17 17:35:24

Sorry - hadn't seen seadragon's or Tessa's posts when I wrote mine!

Nannarose Sun 29-Oct-17 17:33:13

I think what your colleague was thinking of was advice on preventing vaginal thrush and similar conditions. Thrush & other fungal infections thrive in damp warm places and anyone suffering is often advised to prevent it by not wearing tights, or wear crotchless ones, and not to wear tights with trousers. I almost never wear tights with trousers for that reason.
I'm surprised that I'm the first to realise this as it is quite common advice.
Your colleague seems fairly clueless, socially in talking to you like that, and then saying it is'wrong'.

Made me giggle bumblebee. I have heard that wearing tights under trousers creating to much warmth in that area has been known to cause thrush. Don’t know if it’s true but maybe that’s what she was referring to.

pollyperkins Sun 29-Oct-17 16:55:49

Ive been known to water trights under trousers sometimes. I've never heard of the thrush connection (and never had it.) I obviously lead a sheltered life!

gagsy Sun 29-Oct-17 16:49:01

Do what's right for you!

Fennel Sun 29-Oct-17 16:41:11

ps should have said 'diamond shaped'.

Fennel Sun 29-Oct-17 16:40:21

seadragon - I hardly ever wear tights now, for the same reason. If I do, I cut out the triangular shaped crotch first.
It can also lead to UTIs.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sun 29-Oct-17 16:39:37

I wouldn't wear tights under trousers as I think that it would asking for thrush. However I love the comfort of the long sock.

lemongrove Sun 29-Oct-17 15:53:56

Is this a ‘kosher’ thread? hmm

seadragon Sun 29-Oct-17 15:47:57

May have mentioned this before but I now wear leggings instead of tights under my trousers (mostly jeans) having discovered cheapos from Lidl's are great. What a relief after decades of itchy fannyitis, commonly known as Thrush - see Jane1956 above. Now wear leggings with dresses and skirts. GREAT!!!

Rosina Sun 29-Oct-17 15:46:42

What a funny thing to say - people wear what they like! I do find tights under trousers uncomfortable, but I'm sure I read somewhere that men often wear women's tights under their work wear to keep warm - perhaps it was builders or policemen on the beat...not that you see many of those now!

NannyBadcrumble1 Sun 29-Oct-17 15:05:36

When out walking the dog in winter, I certainly wear tights under my jeans! Socks too. Mind you this year with the hot flushes I've been having I'll probably wear shorts and T-shirt. My father used to wear tights under his trousers when we were younger, as his work involved being outside a lot..x

Diddy1 Sun 29-Oct-17 14:59:25

You just do whatever you want to, ignore any negative comments here too. It is still a free country, dont know for how long though.
Just keep warm x

EmilyHarburn Sun 29-Oct-17 14:42:02

I wear tights under trousers and sometimes when it is even colder longjohns. Far better to be warm. I am about to go on holiday to Iceland so will wear all the clothes mentioned, plus a pair of socks over my tights in my boots.

NemosMum Sun 29-Oct-17 14:17:03

In my 20s I was in the Police force. My male colleagues wore their wives' laddered tights under their uniform trousers in winter. Your colleague is a little eccentric in her views and it is none of her business!

jane1956 Sun 29-Oct-17 14:00:32

think there was a theory a few years back that tights under trousers caused thrush, so that maybe what she was meaning

W11girl Sun 29-Oct-17 13:38:55

Take no notice of her. I wear long john's under my trousers when it is cold and sometimes I buy thick colourful tights and cut the feet off and hem them, to make more long johns!! Oo, they are so cosy!

Neilspurgeon0 Sun 29-Oct-17 13:24:05

Men on the upper deck of warships regularly wore the wife’s tights under working dress, usually put on socks to hide the fact but it was a bit obvious in a mess deck full of thirty or more chaps when you come off watch. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in and sod her!
