Remembering Greatnan

I just had one of those 'Your memories on Facebook' pop up and it was a picture of the poster from when Carol went missing whilst hiking near her home in the French Alps four years ago. Her body was found ten days later; she had died doing what she most loved.
Greatnan's posts often ruffled feathers, but there was a genuine outpouring of concern on Gransnet. Thinking today of her family and friends.

Thanks for posting that GA. I can hardly believe it was 4 years ago!

I found Greatnan rather scary when I first joined but I'd love her input into some of the political threads now.

merlotgran Mon 30-Oct-17 11:31:58

Yes. She was scary but I received support when I was jumped on from a great height the first time I dared to dip my toe in to an argumentative thread.

Her forthright manner and well informed posts are sadly missed now but I have to say in all truthfulness, I watched my back!!

I cannot believe that it is 4 years. That was an awful time for her family and friends. 10 days was a long time for her body to be undiscovered.

How quickly 4 years go by, such a strong lady who died doing what she enjoyed most a great loss to GN.

RIP greatnan from Nellie as I was then, you always showed kindness to me and offered me a visit to your home sadly I was unable to comeflowers

MawBroon Mon 30-Oct-17 12:34:22

That was a very tense and even surreal time. I imagine most of us were hoping for a happy outcome but as you read the posts you realise that as hope started to fade something like desperation started to take over.
I too greatly miss Carol’s wit, common sense and life experience as well as her ability to detect bullsh*t at 500 paces. Her kindness when I felt I was being dumped on from a great height is probably single handedly responsible for my still being a member of GN.
A truly unique woman. RIP

MawBroon Mon 30-Oct-17 12:35:40

Sorry I meant ALL of us were hoping for a happy outcome, but perhaps those who knew the area were more realistic in their expectations.

Willow500 Mon 30-Oct-17 12:50:50

What a tragic thing to happen which must have been before I joined GN sad

Galen Mon 30-Oct-17 12:59:38

I still miss her

Icyalittle Mon 30-Oct-17 12:59:48

I only joined Gransnet when I saw the postings on Mumsnet that she was missing. Because I was in the Alps at the time I felt I ought to be able to help, even just by keeping my eyes peeled when we were out and about hiking. I never knew her, or read any of her posts except where she appeared on older threads, but I regularly think about her untimely death when I am walking. RIP

I'm another who often wishes we still had Greatnan's contributions to many threads, particularly the political ones. She was a real life force who shared her life experience so positively with others on gransnet.
One of the positives that came from those awful days when she was missing, was the support from mumsnetters, there was a true exchange of support between our two forums.

Thinking of Greatnan and her family, and thanks granny activist for reminding us x

Oddly, Greatnan was the first person who ever sent me a private message, and I was never ever sure what I had done to illicit it. Nothing sinister, just totally unexpected! I had only just joined GN then. Later, for various reasons, I got fed up and left, and it must have been after that that she had her dreadful accident. A very great shame. I often found her hard to swallow but she was never dull!

Fennel Mon 30-Oct-17 15:04:09

I also joined Gransnet when the search was going on for poor Carol.
I had already 'met' her on 3 or 4 other forums that we both belonged to, and she certainly was a strong character. And like you, Greyduster, I sometimes found her hard to swallow.
Her accident was very sad, and I hope her family has come to terms with what happened - as others have said, she was doing what she loved.

I’ve been thinking about Greatnan/Carol at this time. She is still missed.

Nonnie Mon 30-Oct-17 15:59:26

Didn't realise it was so long ago.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 30-Oct-17 15:59:31

I was thinking about her only this weekend. She is definitely missed.

Anniebach Mon 30-Oct-17 17:23:03

Same happened to me Greyduster, I received a PM telling me not to post until I had been longer on the forum, I thought best to leave but received a welcome PM from another poster,

I am sorry she died in the accident

Luckygirl Mon 30-Oct-17 18:14:23

She is missed - I liked her.

Iam64 Mon 30-Oct-17 18:19:13

So did I Luckygirl. She was forthright, could be challenging but her heart was sound. I miss her.

ninathenana Mon 30-Oct-17 18:22:50

4 yrs shock

RIP my thoughts are with her family

JessM Mon 30-Oct-17 18:27:41

A great character who lived her life in a unique way, living most of the time on her own in the Alps. But such is the wonder of the Internet she had a lively social life on GN.

MiceElf Mon 30-Oct-17 18:45:56

Greatnan’s strength was not only her moral authority, and as Maw says, her infallible bullshit detector, but being one of those rare people who could engage in debate and articulate her view while really listening to the point of view of others and respecting those views. She was able to challenge the opinion and not the person. RIP

glassortwo Mon 30-Oct-17 19:47:58

I often think of Greatnan and the chats we had, wish I had managed to visit her. Thinking of her family today sad
