I look in the mirror and think I'm gorgeous

It's other people that tell me I've got a face like a smacked arse.
So said Kathy Burke in an Observer interview.
She has also described herself as a lifelong member of the non-pretty working classes.
How would GNetters describe themselves I wonder?

If I look in the mirror all I see is disappointment that my mother is looking back
at me grin

BBW. Brown hair with greyfair streaks. A survivor. 58 going on 18. Determined not to grow up.

It's not the mirror in the en-suite, it's the shop window that tells the real story.

I look great in the mirror but somebody else takes my place in photos.

My DM said I was not a beauty but could look attractive if I tried - I think this was more to do with differing tastes in clothes and a boyfriend said I could be attractive if I did something about my hair.

So all told I think I will describe myself as someone who could be attractive if they did something (but not sure what)

I'm stunning until I put my lenses in

Wish I didn't look quite so much like my mother! On the other hand I don't look too bad if the light is right. thlwink Kathy Burke may not be conventionally pretty but she can look very good and her obvious intelligence is very attractive.

I'm quite happy with my appearance, until I walk past the shop windows and I catch sight of that shapeless, dowdy looking woman looking back at me. No matter how much time/money/effort I spend trying to look attractive, I always look so dull and shapeless.

Luckily no-one says anything so rude to me, even if they think it.
I describe myself as a grumpy old bat, a friend referred to me as a game old bird. I think it was a compliment. (No point even thinking about Less of the Old!)

I look in the mirror and think that from the front I`m passable, but it`s when I turn sideways that the horror sets in!

Don't have mirrors in the house, have one small one in a drawer

I look ok if I take the specs off, otherwise every wrinkle, blemish and black/white head is magnified to the extent that I resemble something from the walking dead. It's a salutary experience to gaze at myself....I promise to lose at least 2 stone and then take comfort by emptying the biscuit tin ?

Right now I'm unfit and overweight, but do you know what? I think I'm looking okay all things considered; I'm still alive. One of the advantages of never having been a beauty is that I've never had to worry about losing my looks and as my wrinkles have mostly come from smiling I'm happy with them too. The only person whose opinion really matters to me, The Wonderful Man, loves me for my personality so if I look reasonably okay too that's a bonus. grin

I have plumped up a bit since not being able to walk as I used to, but my DD always says to me that thin women of my age look haggard and that the bit of extra weight suits me and makes me look younger.

I am very impressed by the way I brought her up - her wisdom is so impressive. grin

I once complimented a customers wife to him when she wasn't there.I said Mrs F is a beautiful woman, probably one of the most beautiful I've met.He said she thinks she's FAT ,but I tell her I'd rather be married to a lovely juicy plump plum than a wrinkled prune any day .They had been married over 50 years and she wasn't FAT just not thin. She had a stunningly beautiful face though and amazing skin for a woman of her years .

I am so grateful that as I have got older my DH needs glasses! I am another one who is turning into her mother but even then I wonder if I am kidding myself as she was much younger than I am now when she died!

Very few people ever knew me when I was younger so they have no idea if I have aged well or not! grin

DH has just received photos via the internet from someone we haven't clapped eyes on for 30 years. When he showed me I asked, "Who on earth is that?" and when he told me I replied, "Never!" Swiftly followed by, "Don't let's send one of us!"

Last week found an old photo which had got caught in the film processing envelope . At first I didn't know who it was then it dawned on me that it was me , 4 years ago ! I looked gorgeous . Hour glass figure, half naked , drying my healthy looking hair , smiling with firm cheeks and a rosy glow . Today I'm grey faced , much heavier , wrapped in a thick dressing gown, hair frizzy and needing coloured or chopped , wheezing needing my inhaler , wondering how 4 years could have changed me so much . Can this be reversed ?

I look at myself and all my battle scars and badges of honour and think I look amazing to have come through life relatively intact. I don't care what anyone else thinks because the only opinion I consider is mine ? my SO says I'm beautiful but he does need specs and you won't see me on the cover of vogue. Ladies, we are all gorgeous and beautiful and anyone that says otherwise is just jealous. ?

There is a saying that you can keep your face or your figure as you age, but not both.

I've opted for face!

I actually have grown more confident and don't really worry about my looks any more but I am still shocked by shop windows! shock

downtoearth Tue 31-Oct-17 07:03:25

I keep a paper to put over my head when leaving home..

Witzend Tue 31-Oct-17 07:09:41

As long as I haven't got my glasses on, I don't think I look too bad.
Glasses on is a different matter and best avoided!

Liz46 Tue 31-Oct-17 07:16:14

One of the worst things is to accidentally get the camera on my mobile phone when I am looking down!

downtoearth Tue 31-Oct-17 07:18:02

Oh "Liz* have done just that sad
