I look in the mirror and think I'm gorgeous

It's other people that tell me I've got a face like a smacked arse.
So said Kathy Burke in an Observer interview.
She has also described herself as a lifelong member of the non-pretty working classes.
How would GNetters describe themselves I wonder?

I have wondered if I could apply to the tv programme botched when they ask who the original surgeon was can I say God?

Years ago my Daughter asked my Mother "nanny why do you have tram lines on your face"I think she is too polite to ask me the same question, on the other hand there arent any tram lines any more!

A friend of mine was telling me about someone she knew the other day and she said 'she's attractive, slim and wears nice clothes, like you' . It was lovely of course but how I laughed inwardly. At age 11 I lost all my teeth. A few years ago I lost all my hair. I have dentures and a 'hair system'. I have contact lenses as I am as blind as a bat. I have struggled so much with the way I look and tried so hard and sometimes feel like giving up, but I can't bring myself to. Oh and DanniRae my DH said recently that he still sees me as the girl he met in 1967. Now he REALLY needs to go to Specsavers.

Beautiful inside my body and head which means I AM beautiful. Have you folks not read Naomi Woolf’s ...’The Beauty Myth’...read it ...learn something and throw the mirrors away!! If that fails to convince you read Germaine Greer for goodness sake ...did feminism COMPLETELY pass you by. ???

I see a face with hardly a wrinkle. Not bad for 65. My hair is a big letdown. It's so thin that it ages me considerably.

kittylester Tue 31-Oct-17 11:20:14

I think this was started as grina light hearted thread. We do have them sometimes! grin

kittylester Tue 31-Oct-17 11:21:25

Please excuse the misplaced grin - my phone is running amok!

I often look at photos and think “ I don’t really look like that” and of course it’s always a rare treat if I do look at a photo and am happy with the result ! Luckily these days we can edit our own photos on line, a very handy option !!

BBbevan Tue 31-Oct-17 11:38:37

Passable in a flattering light.

Synonymous Tue 31-Oct-17 11:51:16

Marpau when you were born I expect you were much cooed over and everyone told your mum you were beautiful so don't blame God as we are all sporting the 'lived in' look nowadays! grin
I have read about celebrities who don't smile or show any expression for fear of wrinkles but, my goodness, they do look miserable so .... bring on the look which says we have lived a full life and enjoyed it. smile

We really are all beautiful particularly to those who love us!

I look in the mirror and see my Mother. No she wasn't beautiful - eye of the beholder and all that - but she was very very lovely inside and out. That'll do me big time. As for mirrors that selfsame Mother said 'always have a full length mirror just inside the front door. You'll see if your skirt is tucked in your knickers!' I practice this and smilingly think of her every time I go out. Nice..........

NanaRayna Tue 31-Oct-17 12:32:12

Some days I'm acceptably attractive and other days I'm pleasantly ugly. thlsmile
I'm disappointed not to be gorgeous because I'd love a DH or even a SO, and blokes can be so shallow when there are more fish than anglers! thlsad

henetha Tue 31-Oct-17 12:41:29

I'm just thankful that I'm short-sighted!

meandashy Tue 31-Oct-17 13:02:00

I'm under no illusions about how I look, too many chins and a few spare tyres ? but I know my eyes sparkle and my heart is huge & I love my family and friends fiercely

Fennel Tue 31-Oct-17 13:09:49

When I look in the mirror in the downstairs toilet I look quite good, then go out to the hall mirror and I look about 20 years older.
It depends where the light is coming from, I think.

HootyMcOwlface Tue 31-Oct-17 13:23:30

Yesterday I went on that Glasses Direct website and you can get it to take a picture of yourself so you can 'virtually' try on the glasses. Well, I am still in shock from the old hag that appeared on my screen. The jowls and Turkey neck (i'm inconsolable!) and by heck i would sour the milk! Been googling neck exercises this morning! Sob!sad

sunseeker Tue 31-Oct-17 13:23:48

Like annsixty I have an old woman living in my house who always gets in the way when I try to look in a mirror. She has even taken to following me around and standing in front of me if I look in a shop window!

Day6 Tue 31-Oct-17 13:42:23

Oh in my head I am still pretty and desirable. Photos tell another story though and I avoid full length mirrors.

Me: OK from the neck up and best viewed in candlelight. grin

DanniRae Tue 31-Oct-17 13:55:43

Oh KatyK I met my husband in 1967 too!

Cherrytree59 Tue 31-Oct-17 13:56:40

As I'm now older than my dear departed mother, I wouldn't mind looking like her.

Our eye sight obviously diminishes for a reason. smile

blossom14 Tue 31-Oct-17 14:37:05

If I overdo my make up now I look like the madam in a whorehouse. So I try to convince myself less is more with slap.
The other upsetting scenario is in those changing rooms with mirrors at all angles where one catches sight of extra layers of fat that usually remain unseen.

Alypoole Tue 31-Oct-17 14:54:46

Liz and downtoearth, the same happens if you look down into your iPad-
Where does all that extra skin come from?

JackieBee1 Tue 31-Oct-17 15:17:37

Downtoearth - I proper lol'd at your comment - thank you (feeling miserable today)

Beauty comes from within smile

grannybuy Tue 31-Oct-17 15:19:52

I"m never sure which is the 'real version' - the wrinkles you see with glasses on, or the ones that look finer with glasses off. They are magnified by glasses, so this might mean they are not as bad as they look, but, of course, without glasses we see them as finer/smaller, so is it half way between? I have a slim, well proportioned figure, so look younger from the back, but unfortunately, I have to turn round!

Aepgirl Tue 31-Oct-17 15:54:49

I'm always shocked when I see myself on Skype/FaceTime. Surely I don't really look that old!
