To be honest I've picked up a bad habit

I seem to be saying' to be honest' before very ordinary statements and as I am honest why am I saying this. I am working to eradicate this. Anyone else noticed an annoying habit/cliché in themselves that needs weaning

MissAdventure Sun 03-Dec-17 19:08:47

I have a friend who says "Does that make sense, huh?" all the way through conversations.

lemongrove Sun 03-Dec-17 19:16:30

Say ‘no!’ MissAdventure tchsmile

Jalima1108 Sun 03-Dec-17 19:17:46

So - they're what I call fibbers too Iam64.
Does that make sense? my friend says that too MissAdventure. I feel like saying, no, L****, basically I have no idea what you're talking about. But she is so nice I couldn't do that.

There we are then (oh dear, I think I say that quite often hmm)

ElaineI Sun 03-Dec-17 19:22:59

When we are having training (NHS) all the trainers say "does that make sense?" I think they are trained to say that. No one ever says "no it doesn't"!

Shuttheblinds Sun 03-Dec-17 19:37:58

'Does that make sense' is one that grates me, after every sentence. My friend does this, we laugh now everytime she says it because she knows it drives me bonkers.

Well hun, to be honest, at the end of the day, it's just the way things are what with all this blue sky thinking outside of the box so you'll just have to talk to the hand, if that makes sense ...period.

GranEd Sun 03-Dec-17 20:41:49

Mine is ""now then" when greeting someone. It doesn't even make sense!!

gillybob Sun 03-Dec-17 21:41:21

Mine is "but"

I say it so often but, I don't know why I'm saying it but.

My other one is "do you know what it is " confused

phoenix Sun 03-Dec-17 21:53:48

Listening to a play on the radio, and I was struck by what a ridiculous greeting "how do you do?" is, especially considering the accepted response is to echo "how do you do?" confused

I suppose one could respond with "very well, thank you" but no one ever does.

BlueBelle Sun 03-Dec-17 22:02:35

Apparently I often say Ahh Bless about something sad and my daughter tells me it’s irritating I also try not to call people guys but it’s just rolls of the tongue

Smithy Sun 03-Dec-17 22:38:27

Well posters, I can see where you're coming from!

MissAdventure Sun 03-Dec-17 22:40:40

Well, as I turned around and said, I agree.

Granny23 Sun 03-Dec-17 22:57:35

So, I'm another so and so and so and so ad infinitum.

'So, what happened at school today?'
'So, are you looking forward to the party?
'So, what would you like for tea?'

'Granny, why do you keep saying so all the time?'
'I don't do I?' 'Oh yes you do' Oh no I don't'.

'Anyway, so what?'

Mapleleaf Sun 03-Dec-17 23:14:08

"Anyway" - that was a favourite expression of my dear Mum!

Bellanonna Sun 03-Dec-17 23:26:20

“Don’t get me wrong.” Why do people say that? I wasn’t “getting” them, or judging them anyway, but I do find that one annoying. It’s often followed by “I love them to bits”.

Tbh is used a lot on here, tbh, as it’s common text speak. Like imo, or imho.

I loathe politicians peppering sentences with “Now look”. It sounds so patronising.

Billybob4491 Mon 04-Dec-17 06:17:51

I have a friend, who before sharing what she considers "juicy gossip" always commences with "now keep this to yourself, Another friend can't resist the word absolutely after every comment. As for me,(to be honest)-- I am perfect in every way.-- (wink)

Teetime Mon 04-Dec-17 09:38:49

Politicians preface their complex and ambiguous statements with 'clearly'. Its anything but.

BBbevan Mon 04-Dec-17 09:41:43

Teetime Have you been to Wales recently? " To be honest with you " is used regularly. All my relatives start conversations with this. And I can remember it as a child.

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Dec-17 09:45:51

That's disgusting that is!

(^Have you been to Wales recently?^)

Nana3 Mon 04-Dec-17 10:00:47

My dear Mum used to exclaim "dear God" and we all thought something terrible had happened but it never had.
Mine is also "now then" GranEd, my DGD told me. I'm trying hard not to say it but it slips out.
My DD's is "really?" Especially when the DGC are misbehaving. Don't think she's aware of it.

Granny23 Mon 04-Dec-17 10:14:12

Now you come to mention it - my DD1 says Really? (as a rhetorical question) ALL THE TIME

Maidmarion Mon 04-Dec-17 10:19:17

I LOVE this thread..... laughing out loud!!!!!!!!! (Literally!!!)
Oh, and yes, it's really irritating when people (especially on the radio) say "Now, look....." Very rude!!!!

lemongrove Mon 04-Dec-17 10:19:49

Nana3 tchgrin your first line made me laugh.

Bbevan they say to be honest with you a lot in Gavin and Stacey.

‘Now then’ used to be a common Northern expression, but
‘hiya’ seems to be the preferred greeting in lots of places there now.?

I say ‘really?’ A lot blush but not in the modern way which seems to come from American fims. That kind of really seems to have an ! After it, whereas mine has ? After it.
Does that make sense? tchgrin

Coconut Mon 04-Dec-17 10:33:21

Actually ........

Nona4ever Mon 04-Dec-17 10:34:06

‘No problem’ really gets my hackles up. I was ordering something by phone recently and when I gave my name was told it, happily, wasn’t a problem. When challenged, the young man I was talking to admitted he had no idea WHICH name might have caused a problem.
