Starting this because I don't want to spoil a thread which asks a question on the changing of the end of an opera ,

It you could change the end of a film or book which has a female the victim of a male what would you change ?

Ah yes, I queried the end of Rigaletto. Would a girl who had been raped and deceived by her boyfriend really give up her life for him? I think it's a weakness in the plot and one written by a man. The people I was with thought this was heresy to criticise it in any way. I love The song from Chicago... He had it coming.

'Frankly, my dear, I will love you for ever, no matter what - all I want is your love in return'.

Mill on the Floss. He abducts her, ruins her, indirectly causes her death and ends up sorry for himself and lovingly supported by his stupid fiancée.

Tess of the D'urbevilles, hated the ending when I read it in school. Seemed so unfair that she died . Put me off reading any more of Thomas Hardy's work.

Niobe Fri 19-Jan-18 19:51:49

Posted too early. Tess should have had her happy ever after with Angel and her seducer should have died.

Anniebach Fri 19-Jan-18 20:01:28

I would have Angel struck with a disease in Brazil, come home , Tess nurse him , he will be so weak she will give him ice cold blanket baths, chicken soup with far too much salt reduce his fluids until he begs for mercy for being such a judgemental wimp.

Annie, write a novel! I'll buy it smile

I find Madam Butterfly unbelievably sad but I can't think how I would change the ending without more innocent people suffering ( Pinkertons wife)

When Juliet wakes up and finds Romeo dead at her feet, she steps over him and goes off and marries the Prince after all.

MawBroon Fri 19-Jan-18 21:24:10

What Prince? confused

M0nica Fri 19-Jan-18 21:29:49

The one she turned down because she was in love with Romeo, or was he a count or duke or something else, I am too lazy this evening to check my facts. (I'm blaming the 'lurgy, as long as I can get away with it)

Smithy Fri 19-Jan-18 21:33:38

Bit more mundane, but I'd change the end of The Bodyguard and she'd get her man.

Eglantine21 Fri 19-Jan-18 21:35:40

Count Paris, M0nica.

Rich, respected, powerful. A bit old for a fourteen year old?

M0nica Fri 19-Jan-18 21:59:36

Thank you Eglantine A bit old, yes, but when you look back in history disparate age marriages were not unusual nor unhappy. After all the excitement of her romance with Romeo, someone old and steady who will not go round encouraging her to take doses of dangerous drugs or attempting suicide every time something goes wrong could be quite pleasant.grin

Bathsheba Fri 19-Jan-18 22:01:48

Swan Lake. I would have the swans destroy Von Rothbart and his daughter Odile. What's the point of Odette and Siegfried dying? No way! They could marry and live happily ever after smile

Jane10 Fri 19-Jan-18 22:02:42

Very sensible M0nica!

M0nica Fri 19-Jan-18 22:06:07

Jane10, yes, I was born with feet of clay and tendency to be over-sensible.grin

At the end of EastEnders tonight, I`d have liked Abbie to have come round, and Max to die of shock, I can`t stand him!

MissAdventure Sat 20-Jan-18 00:17:27

I suppose Jane Eyre could end with - Reader, I said "No"

M0nica Sat 20-Jan-18 10:13:14

Quite agree with you Misadventure, I have always thought him a dead bore and never understood why he is considered such a romantic hero.

Anniebach Sat 20-Jan-18 10:16:55

My elder granddaughter after reading Gone With The Wind said - I liked Scarlett, she was a feminist ?

goldengirl Sat 20-Jan-18 10:31:09

Titanic. Jack survives after all. That's what the GC said should have happened when they watched it

kittylester Sat 20-Jan-18 11:03:45

West side Story - Tony lives happily ever after with Maria!

That way DD3 wouldn't sob uncontrollably at the end as she always does despite having seen the film and various stage shows countless times.

Niobe Sat 20-Jan-18 11:09:19

Harry Potter should have married Hermione. Apparently
JK Rowling said as much .
